Sure would be nice to know what exactly the malfunction was.

Probably just stopped.  And their legs were so atrophied that attempting to actually climb stairs made their legs all snap like twigs.

So, it became stairs.

more than 20 people tumbled on top of one another when the escalator they were riding malfunctioned just before 1 p.m.

I was thinking of another comedian who said he tripped on an escalator and fell down the stairs for 2 hours.  Sounds very Stephen Wright but he did the slinky gag.

An escalator breaking while going up probably isn't that big a deal... you stumble and catch the guard rail.

An escalator going down though, I can see injuries.  Sure, I'm paying attention and holding the side, but the fat fark behind me isn't, and suddenly I have to play Raiders of the Lost Ark as he Katamari's down the stairs.

Imagine you're riding a down escalator. Now, imagine what would happen if someone basically pulled the emergency brake*, and the escalator stopped on a dime. Inertia's a thing.

Well unless you count the time the escalator belt broke and all those moving metal plates fell down into the shaft where the machinery lies rendering the escalator impassible.

The larger worry is that the escalator doesn't suddenly fail into stairs, it fails into a very massive falling steel ladder full of people.

If the escalator was packed, it only takes one unbalanced fatty at the top to domino everyone on board.

WTF happened there? All I could see was a terribly overcrowded escalator, but the reactions looked like something worse was going on.

It came off its gearing, most like. The escalator is now rotating backwards, under the weight of the passengers. As people land on the bottom, the people still being descended are crashing on top of them. Without other people pulling the bottom people out, they'd end up being crushed under the weight of all the descending passengers, or getting chewed in the bottom grating.

Broken escalators can be remarkably dangerous.
