"...I don't know if I'm sold on stretching an entire season over such a short period of time. I guess we'll see."

Meh.  The show jumps around so much we probably won't even really notice.

Isn't the new season of Arrested Development doing something similar?  All 13 episodes take place at the same time but focus on different characters.

So most of that weekend will be of Ted pining over Robin and then instantly forgetting her the moment he sees the mom?

I am so over this show. Well...almost. If there was no end in sight, I'd just give up. It used to be hysterical, but then the best and worst characters on the show got engaged and the second-best and second-worst characters got married and had a baby. It's ok now. I'll be glad when it's over.

PowerSlacker: People still watch the shiatfest that are the CBS sitcoms?

Yeah, in fact more people watch them than any other network's sitcoms. So it's YOU that is in the minority.

The "trilogy" episode and Robin Daggers were great and Weekend at Barney's was pretty good. I agree it's gone downhill but it still has some shining moments.

To be fair, I've followed this show since the beginning and the vast majority of the recent episodes have been almost unwatchable for me.  They're too focused on Robin, who is probably the least interesting character at this point (other than Ted) and, for the most part, they just haven't been funny.  I'll keep watching it because at this point I'm just too invested in the show to do otherwise but I look forward to each episode less and less as time goes on.

Your point?

Ted is the glue of this show. As the season go on he is the everyman, while everyone else has increasingly more and more zanier stories. It isn't about who plays him, cause we don't need to bring in external preconceived notions about him to put on the character, Ted works, because the character and the actor who plays him isn't anything special on the surface

Could it be that Josh Radnor hasn't done anything else in his career except play Ted Mosby? Am I the only one hoping that the 'Mother' in question is some one night stand that get's knocked up, tracks Ted down and sues him for child support. He never get's Robin or much of anything else he wants in life, but he slaves away to provide for his kids who live with the mother and never see him. The final scene reveals a 50 something Ted writing at a desk. Zoom in as he finishes a letter with 'And that's how I met your mother' then he pulls a pistol from the desk and the camera pans away as we hear a single shot.
I quit smoking today and my brain is boiling with darkness. Is this how goths feel all the time?

I think calling Jason Segel a "huge star" because of two unwatched, short-run television series is pushing it.

Is Barney the p8ssy hound played by that gay guy - doogie howser?

When he came out that alone brought the series to a screeching halt.
He's gay in real life? Who cares?
But to have a gay guy playing an over-the-top womanizer?
It screams 'over compensation'. (Although he was pretty funny in the 'Harold and Kumar' flicks.)

Geez, you'd think Farkers could spot a troll when they see one. The producers are trolling the fans here. I wouldn't be surprised if the first couple of episodes were how various people met the mother before Ted did, but there's no way that's the entire season.

Idk man. My friend had a lot of "uncles" growing up who weren't his mom's brothers.

So, I asked:

'And you know who plays Marshall?' Naturally, Jason Segel.
'Well of course you know the actor who plays Barney?' EASY ONE! NPH!
'And the other girl, Robin?' Cobie Smulders, yeah.

'OK. Who plays Ted?'

*crickets*

Could it be that Josh Radnor hasn't done anything else in his career except play Ted Mosby? Alyson Hanigan, Jason Segel, and Neil Patrick Harris were all huge stars before the show started, and I'm betting most folks wouldn't know Cobie Smulders if she didn't have that weird name. She also isn't as well known as you are indicating.

I think calling Jason Segel a "huge star" because of two unwatched, short-run television series is pushing it.

How about for  The Muppets, Forgetting Sarah Marshall,  Knocked up or This is 40?

If this series doesn't end with the kid's shocked, blood-spattered faces, mouths agape after witnessing Ted eat a shotgun in front of them, I'm gonna be a little let down.

12349876: Rev. Skarekroe: Isn't the new season of Arrested Development doing something similar?  All 13 episodes take place at the same time but focus on different characters.

Moral Orel went that route during its final season also.

And it got dark as f*ck. Especially with the episode that [SPOILER ALERT] revealed Mrs. Sculptham was obsessed with her rapist (because he was the only person that sexually gratified her) and aborted the resulting pregnancy with a coat hanger. Good lord, everyone in that town were total train-wrecks.

My takes on the finale:

There is no mother - The show all took place in his head, St. Elsewhere style.

or

There is no mother - Ted later discovered he was gay, convinced Barney that his woman-chasing was over-compensation, and got married. The kids were kidnapped from the maternity ward.

or

There is no mother - Ted went insane when he was stood up at his wedding, abducted some kids, and is forcing them to listen to his insane fantasy, like Mrs. Havishham in Great Expectations.

. . . and that's how I met your mother, after having sex with the rest of New York City and some of New Jersey and Pennsylvania and New England.

/if it's an entire season over just 2 days, Cobie Smulders has to take a shower at some point

I still want Lyndsy Fonseca to be the mother despite the big reveal.

//Then I want it revealed that Barney and Marshal died in a car accident. So Ted stepped up and marries both Robin and Lily and has all of his wives pleasure each other nightly. Then he moves to Utah to start his own polygamous cult where a new spin off series takes place and the character of Ted meets and marries a new woman each week.

I remember a lot of dark stuff about that show, but holy crap I had to go back to the wiki page for that, I did not recall that

That show blows. Every character other than NPH's is unbearable. The guy who isn't NPH or Jason Segel can't act his way out of a paper bag,

This.

Gave up in season 6 when robin and Ted were a thing for like the fourth time.

The season finale was surprisingly good, the best episode in awhile. I think this show could benefit immensely from having an endgame planned.  The success of the final season though will really depend on whether the Mother is a natural fit with the rest of the cast.

Sometimes new characters just don't work, and if that happens with the character a season is planned around, it'll be disappointing.

Jason Segel wasn't a huge star before this show, Alyson Hannigan STILL isn't a big star (because she appears to be enjoying having a life) and Neil Patrick Harris was a has-been who had cameo'd in Harold and Kumar.

And Cobie was in a movie that made 1.5 billion dollars last year.

I believe that the mom dies in childbirth with the second kid. If I can remember correctly, one of the episodes of this season talks to him about how wished he could of had more time with her. Barney dies early too, so Ted and Robin marry each other after their spouses are dead.

Or

Barney cheats on Robin with Ted's wife, and they all get divorced. Then Robin and Ted hook up again.

I remember seeing the best burger episode with Jason Segel's speech spoofing Salieri's speech in Amadeus and being hooked on the show then and there. In the last three seasons, there has not really been the same degree of risk taking or inventiveness in their gags. It's all just "the married coupled having a baby and is really tired" crap. Almost able to say the punch lines before they say then on TV lately. But when that show was good, man, it was surprising and brilliant, even with Ted on screen.

2013-05-16 03:55:36 AM
Wife and I are fans of the show, but yeah, it should have wrapped up a couple of years ago. The gags and callbacks aren't as good as it used to be. I think Robin and Ted should be together, but this maybe maybe bs is getting old.

Also, Marshall is the only decent person in that group of people. Lily to a lesser extent, she lost a lot of points when she ran away to San Francisco and undoubtedly skanked around on Marshal. Ted, Robin, and Barney are all terrible people to varying degrees, and deserved every bit of trouble in their lives.

I just wanted to point out in a show called HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER we dont even meet the mother until the dude is like 3 years into the story... Unless shes been secretly in every episode this is stupid.

I've been watching this show since sometime shortly into the first season (I'm pretty sure my first episode was The Pineapple Incident). I still think it's a good show, and it's one that I followed religiously when I was overseas over the last year.

I have no damn clue how they could possibly stretch an entire 22- or 24-episode season over just the wedding. It sounds like an absolutely terrible idea to me. I'm already worried that this will be worse than the last seasons of Scrubs and That 70s Show.

Three years? Try eight. And as far as I know, there's no time compression going on, so each season "happens" concurrent with the airing schedule.

Not saying that's any better. If anything, it's worse.

That's how I got into it also. Then I just binged on Netflix until I was caught up. The decline in quality isn't so obvious if you're not waiting a week between each episode and four months between seasons.

He's crossed paths with her doesn't know her. She was at a St. Patrick's Day party at which he got obliterated, she was the roommate of a TA he briefly dated when he was teaching, and she was in a class he mistakenly taught. She may also have been a girl he was set up with via "computer dating" but whom he stood up.

Wow. Let's crap on something cause you don't watch it...or that it's still on post...

I was late to the HIMYM party and had to catch up on Netflix, I do enjoy the show but I'll admit especially in the early episodes, Ted had no redeeming qualities, he was pretty selfish at times. I enjoyed the season finale but the few episodes prior to that just seem to be there just to get us to the finale. The final season will be interesting.

I had read somewhere that the actress has been on contract since the beginning, when she shot scenes for the series finale with the kids on the couch, as they are likely in their mid-20's by now. It's quite likely her in any of those scenes where Ted doesn't meet her, even if you don't see her face.
