Good thing the for-profit company Twitter exists to allow him to express his beliefs.

2013-05-15 12:12:38 PM
That was definitely not what I expected from his twitter feed. Or his followers.

What the flying fark is a "Lupe Fiasco?" I don't think I want it anywhere near me or my environs.

This is amateur BS from Lupe.  You want a real opinion about class-awareness look into the opinions of rapper "Immortal Technique".  The guy is good.

His ass got collectively owned.

I like Lupe Fiasco. It's not the standard "ringtone rap" you hear these days. Intelligent lyrics, fun hooks not a bunch of boasting and posturing.

Immortal Technique comes up fairly often on my Pandora playlist. I don't mind too much, and he is very good at what he does and actually has something of substance to say. That said, he's a bit too conspiracy theorist for me at times.

It's kinda like a Popazao, but more robust.

His management company pulled him off Twitter for that?  What, are they afraid his followers will think he actually thinks about things?  That's a shame.  If he wasn't complicit in taking the break, I hope he fires his management company.  One of the benefits of being an artist is that supposedly you can speak without fear of being fired by your boss.  You risk people not buying your records if they disagree with you, but you don't have the same corporate shackles that the rest of us blokes have.

2013-05-15 12:52:37 PM
With "Fiasco" as his name, is anything he does really that much of a surprise? Enough to pull him off Twitter?
It has been six and a half years since he got popular, most of his fans probably have a decent idea of who he is and what he does.

He makes a valid argument. His opponents Black Dynamite and Vazza are making the old sentimentalist argument, that revolution via social change will come about through folks simply accepting that its a good idea and harmoniously working towards the goal of more equal income and opportunity. This is child's logic- it assumes that self-interest is not paramount over civic interest, and we know that's not the case, even in the most homogeneous, strictly conformist cultures.

Lupe Fiasco says that revolutionary change comes about via increasing our technological prowess and access to same for all; that more equality is a necessary byproduct of better technology. This is a classic Marxist tenet that was lost in the people's revolutions, and it is by and large a self-evident prophecy. Even the poorest people in America don't starve, or wear rags, or go without access to rudimentary social services. It's even better than that in Europe and Canada and Japan. It's not perfect, but I vastly prefer Lupe's idea that we can improve the lot of all by removing the most menial tasks to automation and technology instead of everyone having to go along with arbitrarily-decided groupthink.

willfullyobscure: This is a classic Marxist tenet that was lost in the people's revolutions,

I don't think it was lost on previous revolutions.  The problem with previous Marxist revolutions were that they were in areas that hadn't had a built up capitalist class and were basically all agrarian people.  Industrialization and collectivization were implemented to ramp up the economy into an industrialized economy, for better or for worse.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Capitalists ever done for us?

He's spot on about the failures of laissez-faire capitalism, but then a verse later, he's talking about how 9/11 was an inside job, and I cringe a little inside.

The capitalists didn't do any of that for us. Catholics, unions, progressives and the governmint did all that. The capitalists built the railroads.

Lupe and Dead Prez are in the same boat: they rap about conspiracy theories instead of money and women, then they use that fact to position themselves as political and intelligent. They are neither.  It is literally exactly what the tea party is doing, too.  Aside from the fact that he's not contributing anything to a real discourse, look at what a hypocritical little biatch he is being: "yeah Marxism, people need to rise up!  Wait, hold on, the guy who gives me money is telling me to be quiet.  Nevermind guys, forget I said anything."  What a joke

If we're thinking of the same song, it wasn't actually his mother but rather he 'saw his mother' in the woman's face and then, overcome by guilt, he jumped off the roof of the building. It is certainly a dark song, but more tragic and remorseful than you make it out to be.

Yes, we're thinking of the same song. I actually took it literally, but you're probably right. I also do agree with you about it being more tragic and remorseful, the guy is a pretty good lyricist on some of the other tracks I've heard from him.
