Do they really still need a midget to sit inside a motorized garbage can?

Lucas isnt around, so we dont need two stupid robots for comedy relief.
Just give us Thrawn, please.

The alternative is Jar-Jar.

This. If people are sentimental about having him be R2-D2 then make him operate the remote control.

Well, we might need Daniels for the gay butler guy's voice but I bet there are laws about cramming an 80 year old midget in a non-ventilated trash can for no reason.

For some reason, I was under the impression that Baker wasn't actually in the trash can in the last 3 movies, Lucas just gave him credit out of loyalty. I must have read that somewhere (probably Wikipedia) but can't find it now.

Yes because furry lizards that absorb the force and clones with extra silent vowels in their names is so much cooler.

Don't question George Lucas about his hobbies!

We could always go for another Time Bandits movie.

I suspect today they'll work out some sort of mo-cap suit and let Baker control a CGI version of R2, thus not needing to be inside anything except a body stocking. This way, he can give R2 his unique mannerisms and movements and take the guesswork away from CG animators who don't have the actor's "feel" for the character.

He's probably the only Bandit still alive, aside from the kid.

2 Stupid robots? Look buddy R2D2 is the true hero of the entire Star Wars saga. A robot who has no force powers, is not a princess, or smuggler, but just an ordinary Joe called upon to stand up to evil dictators, face down insurmountable odds, and bravely charge into danger again and again.

I suppose we can assume that the thrusters were damaged or don't work anymore or that they were how he got up into the X-Wing in Empire and Jedi and didn't need them in any other situation.

Woohhh.diddddly booop!

In a somewhat related note, only yesterday did I find out that C3P0 or Anthony Daniels, to give his human name, isn't actually gay (NTTAWWT) and is married.
All this time, I just assumed....

/I cannot have been the only one, surely!.
//I wonder if he's ever done it in full costume...

I guess it would be a nice gesture to put him *somewhere* in the movie as a bit part.  But R2-D2 can most likely be built as a real robot with today's budget.

I think shoving an 80 year old into a metal can for no real reason would be rather expensive insurance-wise.

Baker was in the prequels but it was about like that. He's in the final scene of Episodes I and II and somewhere in III. Remote-control R2s have three legs and roll around. The R2 "suit" has two legs and Baker makes it shake and nod spontaneously. If R2 needs to do anything complicated it's CGI.

No. He was in it. Like the first three movies, he's only in it when R2D2 'interacts' and 'speaks' with the actors. When it's just sitting there, he's not in it. When it's moving, it's electronically controlled. When he's interacting, it's him.

R2-D2's Violet Bong

Based on a true story.

Before the prequels, this argument had merit. After the prequels, nothign sounds stupid.
