(WTOP)   A statue honoring Confederate soldiers that stands in front of the Leesburg, VA courthouse, which has been there for 105 years, has recently started "intimidating" people who see it and so must be removed   (wtop.com) divider line 408

Let's put up a couple of statues of the Boston Bombers if we're going to be praising enemies of the United States who killed American citizens.

I'd be fine if you also put up a statue of the redcoats, the Nazi's, Al Qaeda and every other enemy of the US that we've beaten the shiat out of over the years.

The Civil War was about State's Rights. To keep slaves. And economics. Of slavery. And a fundamental difference between two cultures. One of which was based on a slavery-based economy. And territorial expansion. Specifically, would the new territories allow slavery. Did I leave any out?

I was going to say we could put a statue of you up as a grammar nazi, but then I noticed how the frown looks kind of better in italics.  :( It's sort of more resigned to the incorrect apostrophe.

Yes, people need to be more tolerant about traitors who were willing to kill people to keep slavery.

The boys in grey had as much choice as the boys in blue, you ass.

By all means crap on Robert E Lee's grave (although I wouldn't because he was honorable) and empty your cat's litter box onto Jefferson Davis' bust, but to dis a bunch of farm kids who got all tore up lead balls the size of grapes and then rotted to death of gangrene? You have to be a special kind of douche to hate on kids who died like that.

None of that changes the fact that they were waging a treasonous war against the United States.

I don't get it.  This isn't some redneck with a confederate flag in his truck window and a sticker adorned on the bumper above his trucknutz saying "The South will rise again".  There's memorials all over every major civil war battlefield honoring the soldiers who died and they are specifically Confederate or Union.  Example:

s10.postimg.org
Texas regiment monument at Vicksburg.

Is there something in the article that I missed that states the monument in question has some other meaning or am I missing something in general?

so, let me get this straight: virginia won't let the boston bomber be buried there... yet they want to celebrate men who tried to destroy the united states of america simply so they could buy and sell other human beings as property?

boy, i dunno....

You know who else got tore up lead balls the size of grapes and then rotted to death of gangrene?  The soldiers fighting for the US.  And yet Leesburg is honoring the people who did that to them.

For a bunch of people who like to claim they won aware that ended a century and a half ago as though they personally saw action at Gettysburg, y'all sure get butthurt over the slightest things. That's okay. We'll all come together and enjoy Confederate Marksmanship Day with a three day weekend at the end of the month.

What about a kid who got shot by police and run over by his own brother?  Kind of the same thing really.

You know what hurts the most is the... the lack of respect. You know? That's what hurts the most. Except for the... Except for the other thing. That hurts the most. But the lack of respect hurts the second most.

Except for not even remotely, sure. President Andrew Johnson gave blanket amnesty and pardons for all Confederates who took up arms (except for those with certain amounts of property, i. e. the wealthy, who had to apply for amnesty) in the war. Why do you hate President Johnson? Do you not respect the rule of law?

And the Confederate soldiers were fighting another army - an invading army as far as they knew - on the field of battle, not sneaking around killing and maiming innocent and unsuspecting people.

Come on, this is Northern VA.  NoVa adheres to the beliefs of the "Old South" as much as an Atheist believes in transubstantiation.

This is a statue honoring the dead.  It is a relic of the past and nothing more.

There was also "the acknowledgement of the white man's superiority" that the south objected to the North's lack of.

Are you saying that the Confederates were a bunch of sister-farking morons who couldn't tell they were fighting the American army on American soil? I mean, I agree, but I'm surprised to hear you say it.

Sounds like somebody needs to chill out. Memorials exist all over to both sides. It's part of history. We can't wipe the history we don't like from the books.

Besides, the South lost pretty badly. Good enough for me.
