WillofJ2: ongbok:

I think everything outside of the lakers and knicks and maybe dallas, is at a fiscal disadvantage with tv deals and marketing partners, the fact that the lakers would not amnesty Kobe and take an 80 million dollar penalty just doesnt seem right

You forgot about Chicago. After Jordan NBC was just wishing for a reason to get the Bulls back on national TV because those games where some of their highest rated games. Their prayers were answered by Rose.

TheMexicansLoveMe: ongbok: TheMexicansLoveMe: ongbok: TheMexicansLoveMe: ongbok: TheMexicansLoveMe: ongbok: Would you still consider San Antonio a small market after their success?

The way I look at it, a team may start off in a small market, but after they achieve the success a team like San Antonio has and has the money coming in from marketing and TV deals, they shouldn't really be considered small market anymore because they have gotten the attention of the world and now are popular in the largest market.

I don't think a cities market value refers to the teams popularity or success.

Uh why not? Their popularity translates into the sells of their apparel, especially world wide. From what i understand Spurs apparel is popular all over Europe, mainly because of Parker and Ginobali. The more shiat they can sell increases the amount they can charge to license their name to merchandise. That adds to their market value. Do you not think that the Yankees market value isn't tied to their popularity, and their popularity isn't tied to their success?

yeah I see your point for sure.  It's just a real huge leap to compare San Antonio to places like LA or NY, you know?

Oh I know they aren't a monster like the Lakers or Knicks, but they are a far step above from OKC or Memphis and shouldn't be considered small market like them. I wouldn't even call them mid market.

But what is funny is that a team like the Clippers would be considered small market, and they are.

Ok I guess I am confused semantically here.  I assumed a "small market team" refers primarily to the immediate market that they play in?

In the sports world small market refers to their possible fanbase. For example, nobody would ever consider Green Bay small market. Originally that may have been the definition, but with TV and marketing now, that definition has changed.

That is why I said the Clippers. They are in a large market, but they have been for a long time ignored by by that market because of the other team making them ...

The marketing is why you see so many more teams going after European players. You get a player from that market on your team, you open up a whole new market for your apparel, as long as that player is good.

oMaJoJ: TheMexicansLoveMe: I was pretty excited about Seattle getting a team again, but still a little heartbroken that it might come at the expense of a great fanbase/arena in Sac-town.

/looking forward to the I-5 rivalries starting so I can 'hate' the Sonics and the Kings again

Wait what, I thought that the owners rejected the deal?

Oh no, they did.  I'm happy that the Kings are staying, just hoping that Seattle can get a team again

\Bobcats maybe?

Stuck at work but listening to these homer play by play commentators for the Grizzlies with the game time app is kinda awesome.

WTF did Allen do?

He was presumably waving a towel around (like the players do on the bench when an opposing team's player is shooting a 3 near them) and the towel came out of his hands and flew onto the floor near Derek Fisher and Jerryd Bayless' feet.

The same officials for the series would be fine once they get rid of joey crawford, if he got a spurs series and they lost they would probably hang him from the alamo

Milwaukee doesn't give a shiat about basketball, send the Bucks to Seattle and maybe give that city a hockey team.

LOL, I hate the Spurs but that's great. I might hate Crawford more than the Spurs, to be honest, fark that guy.

Oh, that doesn't sound too bad, because the commentators lost their shiat over that.

kind of amusing

ah, that is actually really funny.  Without any context except Duncan and Crawfords altercation, that pic looks pretty bad.

I keep looking at the score of this game and thinking it's in the middle of the 3rd.

TheJoe03: Most valuable teams in the NBA:
1. NY Knicks
2. LA Lakers
3. Chicago Bulls
4. Boston Celtics
5. Dallas Mavericks
6. Miami Heat
7. Houston Rockets
8. Golden State Warriors
9. Brooklyn Nets
10. San Antonio Spurs

It appears market size has a definite impact on the value of a team. If the Knicks played ball in San Antonio that would probably be one of the poorest teams in the league since they've sucked pretty hard for a while. It just took them a couple winning seasons to become the richest team.

There are a lot of old players that would be marketing gold if they played in today's NBA. All of those guys that came out of the old Yugoslavian national team, Detlef Schrmepf, and my favorite European player of all time,  Sarunas Marciulionis. If there was ever the big marketing push to Europe that the NBA has today those guys would have been some of the most wanted players in the NBA. Well maybe not
Sarunas Marciulionis, but that dude would make that behind the back pass right on the money after took the slowest drive to the hole you had ever seen in your life, and he could hit a shot from just about every place on the court.

Texas really representing there wow, been to san antonio a couple times, never imagined top ten, guess sea world helps a lot, doesnt explain orlando not being there though

oh man, OKC really has shiat the bed on offense tonight.

I don't know why Durant is complaining about always being "second best."  He really should figure out how to use his incredible length and agility to be a defensive presence, then maybe people will start to try to compare him to LeBron.

Those Yugoslavians earning respect on the court is the reason opportunities exist for foreign players now. Crazy how global the game is now, I doubt anyone in the 80s saw it coming.

You would think the Thunder would be playing with more passion, they don't seem too worried that they might get knocked out soon.

Yeah that is pretty surprising.  I really thought that they would put up more fight.

I'm surprised at the pass the media has given Rose over refusing to play. He's not even saying he's not fully healed or he's still in pain. Just that he's not mentally ready, which is ridiculous. If this had been Dirk Nowitzki a few years ago, or Lebron James 2 years ago the media would have eaten them alive. When you think of how much heart the rest of the team showed in this series it really should piss Chicago fans off.

Hitting the exits early is always pretty lame.  There's a petty and malicious side of me that hopes that OKC abandons the Thunder completely when they aren't that great and don't have immediate potential.

And if he came back, disputed a Chicago play call scheme that learned to play without him there because hey, he's Derrick Rose, why bring him back if you're not going to use him, and Miami went right at his rusty ass, he would've gotten hell for that too.
