Wait, I don't get it. Why would that be a laughable idea? Both Detroit and Chicago have won cups in the last 5 years. They met in the Conference championships 4 years ago.

I'm laughing harder than I should right now at Detroit's expense

Go Hawks, the cup is pretty much yours to take at this point

Ok Detroit, you took out the ONE team that gave Chicago fits this past season (beat them in regulation twice & once in OT.  Not incredibly impressive but better than the rest of the conference...), you'd better step up & prove that you're worthy of taking their place.

As a fan of the Western Conference living in the Eastern Time Zone I must admit that I do like this 8pm start time as for the first time in a couple of weeks I should be in bed before midnight (now watch tonight be the first multiple OT game of the year....yeah I wouldn't be upset with that either...).

Regardless, lets hope for a good game tonight & not a snoozefest blowout.  Even if I'm not a big fan of either team, I do like to watch exciting hockey.

I'd like to see the Wings win for their sake.

Go Redwings!  I will be somewhat surprised, though happily, if they beat Chicago.  The Blackhawks are clearly the favorite to win the cup this year, and we've had some unfortunate injuries.

Still.  GO WINGS!

I'm a full fledged Red Wing hater, but I'm not butthurt.

The Wings had to come back against Anaheim to win that series. A pretty big accomplishment and they were the better team.

Them winning that series has set up this one, which I think will be great watching.

In this series I say go Red Wings. Once they move to the East I'm not gonna see much of them and I'll have to  start supporting, say, the Kings once the Flames don't make the playoffs/lose in the first round.

The Wings had the skill set and experience, watch out for the Ducks next year or two.....as much as pains me to even type that out let alone think it.

And the only reason they'll lose game 4 is so they can win it in Chicago

IdBeCrazyIf: watch out for the Ducks next year or two

It's possible, but I'd be more concerned about Edmonton in the coming years.  The Ducks have some good young talent, but they might not be able to keep it all.  And like any team, a couple key injuries could derail a season, and no one can predict something like that.

As always, I could be wrong.

Pffft. Edmonton. They say that every year.

The Yakupov pick was the f*cking stupidest thing they could have done. They have more than enough prospect forwards who are going to have really solid careers in the NHL. What they also have is porous defence and bad goaltending.

Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall have matching $6 million deals and Nugent-Hopkins is well on his way to a similar deal of his own. Should Yakupov turn out like that, Edmonton could have $24 million in salary tied up in their four young star forwards.

They're going to be way overspent.

There's no way, in the longer term, that Edmonton can keep all four of them. And that is to say nothing of how they're going to fix their defence and goaltending problems.

Could the Oilers be good? Yes, they certainly could be, but they've gone entirely off the deep end trying to get young scoring talent at the expense of everything else on that team. They should be building up their team a bit more evenly, not just going nuts on the offence.

I can't disagree.  But young scoring talent can also be great trade bait as well.  They do need goaltending, and their defense definitely could use help, but adding or trading for a few key pieces and they could be a top team.  At least until the cap comes around to bite them.  But that's the way it works now a days.  Dynasties are not feasible anymore, it's all about winning now.

I agree.

But think if they had traded that #1 pick and sealed up their goaltending problem. Instead of another playoff miss, the Oilers could have been contending for a spot.

They'll sell the same old bullsh*t about not wanting to "just make the playoffs" but home playoff games make huge coin for the team and they'd love to have it.

It's very possible.  I'm not saying they're doing everything right.  Everyone has their own plan.  I'm just saying that their talent level, particularly up front, is scary.  If, and it's a big if, they can sure up their back end, they could make a run.  All teams say they don't "just want to make the playoffs" but that's the only way you're going to win the Cup.  The playoffs are a whole different animal than the regular season, and crazy shiat can and does happen.  If you're in, you've got a chance.

And a follow up --

Since it's inception, the President's Trophy has been awarded 27 times (including this year) and only 7 of those have won the Stanley Cup:

1986-87 Oilers
1988-89 Flames
1993-94 Rangers
1998-99 Stars
2000-01 Avalanche
2001-02 Red Wings

Well, if we're talking about "Pen elimination day", that couldn't have happened before 1967, which also eliminates 7 of Detroit's Cups -- so then it's 4 to 3 Detroit, which is much closer.

Overall the Penguins been eliminated 43 times

Overall the Detroit Cougars or Falcons or Red Wngs or whatever you'll call yourselves next have been eliminated 76 times.

The Prince of Wales Trophy was used as the "President's Trophy" from 1938 to 1967, during which time 16 of 29 won the Stanley Cup. 11 of 18 teams had the best overall record and won the Cup between 1967 and 1985. Prior to that 2 of 11 teams had the best regular season record and then won the Stanley Cup while it was awarded to the NHL champion exclusively.

Adding that all up, the regular season champion is 36 of 84 in winning the Stanley Cup the same year.
