Crickets are actually pretty tasty. I had them in Mexico with salt and chilli powder. They made a decent snack food.

The cooked and crunchy grasshoppers and caterpillars actually sound OK. The only one that really gives me an ick factor is the tarantula.

Bacon, eggs, gravy and biscuits

Eating bugs is disgusting and stupid. If you need to do it to survive, fine. Otherwise farking stop you stupid hipsters.

I'm so glad I don't live in a third world hellhole where I have to look to insects to get protein.  I don't care if they're tasty.

My cousin brought back some chocolate ant balls (sounds kinky I know)  from a vacation once, everyone thought it was rice krispies in them.

I love people who cringe at the thought of eating bugs. Let your preconceptions go. It's just like any other food. Prepared properly it's fine, healthy and odds are tasty.

FWIW, it's not hipsters doing this stuff, it's the wealthy. From live bugs and weeds to maggot infested cheese and nuts that have been shiat out by a monkey. Food that one would normally only eat to survive is currently HUGE in the world of the 1%. Maybe it's so they can say "I've been to the ghetto and it was fabulous."

/waiting for them to line up for athlete's foot

I ate plenty of bugs in survival school. They taught us to look for the 6-legs, stay away from spiders, etc. But I ate some bug, don't know what, that made me feel like I had to piss every 10 minutes for the next 8 or 10 hours. I didn't have to, mind you, but I'd get the urge, go to the edge of camp to pee but nothing. I never did figure out what that was.

Tarantulas taste like lobster.

Can you make a mobile abortion clinic out of an old roach coach?

I was going to say you probably got it from the toilet seat but it doesn't sound like you had one.

What is it lately with eating insects? Are they trying to tell us something?

I love crunchy spicy crickets, prefect with a cold beer. Anyone who says "omg gross" and has had a crawfish or shrimp is a moron, it's the same damn thing.

I think i'll stick with my crab, bacon and cheddar omelette.

/maybe add some hot peppers if I'm feeling feisty.

From TFA: The sago palm weevil, a type of beetle, is eaten, roasted or raw, as a larvae in Southeast Asia. Their taste is apparently similar to bacon.

Ok, I wonder if I can find this on the local bug carts around Bangkok. If it tastes like bacon, I'm in. Only thing I've tried is grubs, and they weren't very good. Edible, but not something I'd snack on.

And if tarantula's taste like crab, then I'd be up for that, too.

2013-05-15 07:54:02 AM
err... to be clear, the type of grubs I've had were not sago palm weevil grubs. Apparently they are more of a delicacy, so I guess I'm unlikely to find them on the street carts here in Bangkok.

Why not feed the bugs to pigs to create tasty bacon?  Those nasty f*ckers will eat anything.

The reasons hippies never get their way is that the way they disperse their ideas is so ineffective.

Cause I suspect the bugs are too expensive to grow as pig feed, and the pigs are just as happy to eat corn and processed table scraps.

/I've been pondering a similar idea for fish farming.
/But I haven't found much info for farming insects in massive quantities.

With all the talk of eating bugs I have to wonder if its just the next step in the oppression of the masses by the monied few.

Agent Smiths Laugh: With all the talk of eating bugs I have to wonder if its just the next step in the oppression of the masses by the monied few.

Doubtful.
I think it has more to do with appeasing the guilty consciences of well meaning idiots who either think meat is bad for the environment or are convinced that its cruel to eat prey animals.
Management of the farm aside, had those animals been in the wild they'd have either been eaten by other animals or injured and dead from exposure or disease. Bambi's mom wasn't looking at a pleasant future.

I'm not convinced feeding our kids bugs is the answer to the problem of poorly run industrial farms, but I do know that farm preclude the need forsubsistence hunting.  Cleaning up the farm is the better solution for both wild herds and humans.
It also seems a more sellable idea than a jar of ground up insect meal or meat substitute.
