PNG is an image format, and also an abbreviation for Papua New Guinea. GIF is an image format that enables animation. So for a PNG to become a GIF, it would gain the ability to move, much like an island does during an earthquake.

I give this +++++ for subtlety.

PNG is a layered and uncompressed file format. GIF is a flat and compressed file format.

For goodness sake....PNG and GIF are picture formats. A GIF is a (can be) picture with motion...much like those clapping above in the thread.

Link goes to reference site of recent earth quake in Papa New Guinea...it was shaking.

PNG = Papa New Guinea
GIF = a reference to "Shaking" or "movement"

/facepalm

It was quite funny, and it required no explanation. It was clever, but not particularly complicated or arcane. Well, as always, individual results may vary.

errr..... both are layered depending on how they're saved, and both have compression.

So you've been misinformed...

The "real difference" is that GIF is generally limited to 256 colours (unless you go with the advanced GIF format, but almost no one uses it as the compression algorithm are crap), while PNG is technically an advanced JPG type algorithm (so millions of colours) with the multilayer and transparency capacity of a GIF.

Both now have the capacity of having a setup to display the layers in a timed value aka animated GIFs.

(or PNG), but the default is still to view/call animated graphics - or assume they are - animated GIFs.

Yes, I saw where subby was going but missed the exit. At first, I tried color limitations and then compression algorithm, which I decided was too advanced for the joke. Both can be moving animations but don't need to be, but it was the last possible reach for a punchline. It was Fark, so I decided that must have been the gist of  what they were reaching for.

Earthquake was weak too. Earthquakes this size happen several times a week worldwide and a couple of times a year in PNG.
