'What we have to commit ourselves to is we have to stand on top of this and not tolerate the new modernism,' the letter reads.

hmmmm, i see electric lights in your school, and i am sure that lots of you arrive there by those new-fangled horsless carriages, or on the subway.

Bungles: Do you also get angry when you see someone wearing a tie? What is the purpose of a tie? It's a bizarre affectation that has become culturally required.

The only time I wear a tie is in winter to keep my neck warm. Keeps drafts out.

Well, some muslims do get angry about it...

I think the issue with glasses is that you're basically reducing a medical device to a pure fashion item, which will take some time to get accepted (sunglasses do have a non-decorative function, after all). So it's a bit like a 20-something going around with a cane.

But the folly of today is tomorrow's fashion. I can definitely see a future where genetics and lasik removed most eye conditions and glasses will still be worn. After all, we wear most of what we do not out of utilitarian purposes, or else most office workers would be fine with non-descript mumus.

indylaw: Jewish law - 4000 years of unbroken tradition handed down from G-d himself to Moses, or making it up as we go along?

Or in this case, it seems, 133 years of unbroken tradition since it was invented in Poland.

Similar glasses... but the BCG frame connects in the middle of the eye vs. up top in designer.

Boy do I ever feel stupid. When people come in here and apply for a job wearing those kind of frames, I ALWAYS give them a job because I thought they were too poor to afford good frames and really need our vision coverage. ;-)

/we do have rockin vision coverage

I think schools should encourage the wearing of these glasses. Because birth control.

I wish he could come, but it's Shavuot. Usually he defends all Jewish actions no matter how silly they can be, yet he's been defending Hipsters too. I wanted to see his head explode defending both sides here!

Not quite. He is always ready to criticise Jews for being insufficiently observant (ie less so than him) or over zealous (ie more so than him).  All Arabs, on the other hand, are terrorists and that's that.

Actually the tradition was designed in such a way that we could change it when needed

It's Daily Fail. Half their articles are written by a computer, the other half by homeless people locked up in basement in exchange for sandwiches.

And seriously, they're just worried their boys will become unduly influenced by degenerate modernist rockers such as Buddy Holly and his love of such whores as Betty Lou and Peggy Sue.

You are my favorite favorite.

catmandu: So, kids can't wear 50's and 60's style glasses in 2013. What did they do in the 50's and 60's, require them to wear pince nez from the turn of the century? I am all for private schools establishing a standard of dress if they feel it is necessary but this strikes me as being a bit absurd.

Serious answer, before the whole "let's look nerdy! But ironically!" hipster trend got going, those same sorts of schools banned metal frame glasses and required plastic glasses because they look, well, nerdy and unfashionable and the kids are not supposed to care about modern fashion AT ALL.

But the rules are pretty much doomed now - once the idea of looking unfashionable BECOMES the height of secular fashion, it's like a snake eating its tail, they can't win.

Parents are upset at the idea of possibly having glasses rejected, because they're expensive. Other parents said that anyone in the community should just "know it when they see it" if a certain frame is too fashionable. Hilarious part is, that would mean they are paying attention to fashion to know!

Yep, that's the Tats we know and... love? The funny thing that got me recently is the fact that he is defending hipsters now, which is odd, because I thought he was an Haredi Orthodox Jew himself but I guess he's probably more like this.
