(Possibly Cynical) Question:

Does him dying like this bring more attention to the cause he was promoting than actually completing his goal would have?

I say we put his ashes in a "football" and continue his journey 10 miles at a time.  Kind of like the olympic torch but with a dead guys remains.

This really isn't a funny story. It's actually quite tragic. My laughter after reading the article is inexplicable.

Choosing to be a full time pedestrian greatly increases your chances of being hit by a car. Math.

The thing is that the car only nicked him.  He's just playing dead to make sure that the driver gets a penalty.

That newspaper had a story about the soccer dribbler and his story, full of small-town feel goodness; it was a once-per-week segment, posted literally within a couple hours of his death.

And apparently they pulled it from the website after they learned of it.

Thanks for that tidbit, Mr. Reporter.

I find it hard to feel bad for someone who was hit by a car while playing ball on a highway.

Looks like he had a GoPro camera attached to him. That would be some interesting footage.

That's very true actually.  Most people don't think about pushing themselves several inches into an engine compartment

Friends are talking about creating a foundation in Swanson's memory, and sending his two sons to Brazil for the World Cup, Schwesinger said.

Wait a second here.  This 42 year old goof takes off on a 10,000 mile journey on foot just to promote handing out blue soccer balls to third world kids even though he has his own kids at home?  I feel really bad for the two boys, because if genetics mean anything they've got a lifetime of poor decision making in front of them.

/sad outcome
//stupid publicity stunt

Who are these people that can just take time off from life and walk 10,000 miles to Brazil?!  I mean, how independently wealthy do you have to be to do that?

It's a shame he got killed just the same.  And, though it wasn't mentioned in the article, really, I feel kind of sorry for the person that hit him too.  It appears to just have been a stupid accident.  And that person is going to live with this forever.

I know this is Fark and all but I can't muster any snark for this.  In fact, the trolls all ready hating on this are turning my stomach.  To counter this, I am going to add to ignore list and donate $5 to One World Futbol for each new entry.  $15 so far.

hmm, TFA says driver wasn't charged, which set off my police negligence alarms from all the car-cyclist accidents I hear about.  Hopefully the video clearly shows who was at fault and leads to any applicable charges.

you must have missed the part where his kids are adults now.
"He was at a point in his life where he had raised his kids," she said. "Both his boys (Devin and Raven) had graduated from high school.

I question the sanity of a man who names his son "Raven" more than a man who dribbles a soccer ball to Brazil.

I wouldn't call this slacktivism.  Slacktivism is thinking that sharing a facebook status counts as an actual charitable endeavor instead of just social posturing.  The guy actually tried to do something, as stupid as it was.

But naming your son "Raven" is inexcusable. Maybe his ex-wife pushed that on him.

I read about his trip a few days ago and started a pool listing where he would get robbed with a bonus if ya selected fatality correct. Most of the bets were south of Mexico but north of Brazil, only bet even close had him buying it in NoCal traffic. Guess he will get the prize when he comes in for his guitar tomorrow.

Can't imagine walking anywhere for 10000 miles, especially dribbling a soccer ball the entire time. That would really suck after the first couple miles.

I respect the guy's goal, but there had to be a safer way to get the message out. He only made it to Oregon before he got hit by a car, I can only imagine the roads in central and south America would be way worse.

Some of you Farkers are idiots. What does it matter if he was some hipster douchebag taking advantage of money he may have had to promote soccer. He was doing something that made him happy and he was not taking advantage or hurting anyone. Maybe it's because I shouldn't read Fark in the morning, but a few of you sound bitter.

I'm not quite getting why he was dribbling a soccer ball. Shouldn't he have been kicking a soccer ball to Brazil? What was his next plan, to drive a boat around the world? Walk a wheelchair to the Special Olympics?
