"...cooks, waiters, butlers, housekeepers, governessess, maids, valets, baby sitters, janitors, laundresses, furnacemen, caretakers, handymen, gardeners, footmen, grooms, and chauffeurs of automobiles for family use."

Quite the aristocratic list there.  Has a nice 18th century feel to it.  Keep up the minority outreach efforts, GOP, I'm sure they'll start paying dividends soon!

This is sort of the issue with immigration reform.

If we want to make meaningful strides, we have to look at those who employ illegal labor. We have to not just look at them, but actually address unfair business practice. Folks are screaming at what this will do to the price of apples, but not about what the depression of wages does for communities held to artificially low wages that defy market forces.

We need to look beyond just amnesty programs, but making things hard on folks who employ illegal labor. Not slap on the wrist fines, but potentially ending of businesses sorts of fines. Phoenix is a prime example of this. When the housing boom hit Phoenix, there was little said about the guys who employed illegal labor, and once the houses and projects were built, then you had a Sheriff's Department that suddenly wanted to run all the darned brown people back to Mexico. Not while the houses were being built, but only afterward. THEN it was a problem. Not folks were making a killing with illegal labor. Not when folks were paid to look the other way. Nope. It was an issue only after the money was made, and the folks that were enticed to come Norte failed to simply disappear.

Amnesty is not a solution, but if you want to deter folks from coming up illegally, you have to dry up the job sources, and right now, that market is booming, and it has to be addressed. Not by looking at the folks crossing the border, but the folks who make a mighty big profit using these folks, and doing so with full knowledge that their business practices are illegal.

NO! I have a better idea.  We can buy them citizenship..... BUT they have to work x amount of years for the people that bought them their citizenship to repay the debt.  Indentured Servitude making a comeback baby!

I'm not one of these "hate the rich" types at all, but if you employ "furnacemen" and "footmen," you should have all your money taken from you and be put in stocks and pelted with refuse in the community square.

See, in any immigration conversation I say "well let's clamp down on the people hiring illegals, too!" Notice I said "too" and not "instead of the illegals themselves." The Republicans in the thread will give a half-hearted "oh yeah, them too" but they'll never be the first to suggest it. Doesn't that strike you as odd considering they act like illegal immigration is the number one threat to our way of life?

If the GOP keeps this up, CONSERVATIVE will be listed as a synonym to RACIST in the thesaurus.

Actually this looks like a good addition to me. Let any citizen employ (ie, effectively give a green card to) what are now undocumented workers

The workers become documented and all parties benefit

Society benefits from workers who are no longer working tax free

I meant work visa -- not green card
The green card is part of this reform -- but the work visa is a reasonable addition

Hong Kong has this provision -- it does provide for abuse -- but I believe those can be mitigated

And this is different from now, how?

I can remember stories of the wealthy in NYC sometime in the late 80's and early 90's who got caught with undocumented workers, mainly due to the fact that they treated them worse than animals, all the while expecting them to be good servants.  Anyone that tells you that there is no actual slavery in the US is talking out of their ass.  The only reason it isn't really talked about is that it's done to people who aren't here legally.

I guess in minds like Lee's, it's ok to enslave people as long as they aren't Americans.

In minds like Lee's, if they're not Americans they're not people anyway.

He's just looking out for the poor and the middle class. Have you priced household servants lately? There is just no way that a part-time job at Wal Mart is going to buy a nanny and a butler if we don't allow illegals to do those jobs. Just imagine how crappy my trailer would look if I had to fire my grounds crew! It's unthinkable! Just the thought of having to let my footman go has me so angry that I may have Manuel fire up the limo and drive me over to my congressman's district office and give his secretary an earful! I don't work 3 part-time jobs just to have to cook my own ramen noodles, dammit!

2013-05-14 11:29:01 AM
And there is absolutely no way that someone on a visa for for just personal service would ever be taken advantage of. Yep, no way this could turn into any type of sex slavery.

Gasp suprise, republicans are only interested in protecting people who are doing the exploiting. I guess he's going to introduce the second half of the legislation the "Run the dirty brown people out of MY country once they're no longer useful so they don't have their dirty brown  children  here" act of 2013.

Not "only" Republicans, there are Democrats bobbing around out here. Independents as well. I thought people had decided that blanket statements were considered lazy and misinformed?

That said, I think our current batch of Senators and Congressmen are all 'Pubs, but I'm not sure, still not ONLY Republicans in the state, though.

Jim Matheson, who represents Utah's 4th District, is a Democrat, though a rather conservative one. Still, I'm glad he's my rep now instead of that clown Chaffetz.

That's right, I'd forgotten Matheson. And yeah, dried dog feces would be an adequate replacement for Chaffetz.

Ahh, so are you one of those people who believe that the mistakes of the past cannot be learned from and corrected?

Or one of those people who believe that a title such as "Democrat" or "Republican"  cannot be review and rescinded when they change over the course of one hundred years?

Either way your comment resembles modern day Repub re-re.

See how I quantify the remark with a time frame to provide clarity?

The best thing about this, of course, is that with legal shielding themselves the employers are no longer subject to unfairly being blackmailed by the employee for the actual wages and overtime they might greedily want to be paid. You can simply report them and get them deported without fear!

2013-05-15 04:51:56 AM
Why should that he's a Republican matter?  If he were a Democrat or Libertarian, the idea would still be just as ridiculous.

Republicans...  they want to have their cake and eat it too.
Against illegal immigration, but also against paying Americans a living wage... brilliant!
