Considering the Fark headline, this bit from TFA got a chuckle out of me:  Mexican authorities raised the alert level for the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City on Sunday morning after observing an increased level of explosive activity.

So "Yellow 2" is the third highest? Is that some Messican metric system for volcanoes?

You can pronounce it, and it's actually fun to say.  "Poe-poe-cat-a-petal".  I like to talk about volcanoes just so that I can say that name.

"these food dyes (Red 3, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 2) which make up over half of the food dyes used each year have been shown to cause cancer.  (1985)"

Trik: anyone rember what the area of damage Mt St Helens made when it blew way back when?

If I remember it was around 30 miles in on direction and 5 miles in another.  So depending on what side blows up.  The heavy  ash went for many many miles though I think 75-100 in come cases.

maybe one was, a very loonnnng time ago.  I thought it was the one that started in 1943, that was Paricutin.  First volcano to have been observed from birth to extinction in recorded history.

I am so jealous. When I was a kid, I wanted to see a volcano so bad that I spent a not-inconsiderable amount of time trying to poke holes through the earth's crust with a stick.

Actually, I still really want to see a volcano, but I can't afford to visit Hawaii and I'm not stupid enough to get close to a less predictable one.
