(Anchorage Daily News)   On second thought, maybe trying to cross frozen pond in a bulldozer wasn't such a good idea   (adn.com) divider line 25

Sure it is.  Anyone can go fishing for perch or Bass or Catfish.  But only YOU can say you're going fishing for $45,000 worth of 'dozer you lost last year when you made a bad decision.

 I wouldn't put a toy D-6 CAT on ice.
This guy had it coming.

I wonder how much money was in the betting pool on how far he would make it across the pond?

I know it's still Alaska and everything, but it's the middle of MAY for fark's sake.    This guy's town is getting 18.5 hours of sunlight every day right now.  "Yeah sure, the temperature has been well above freezing every day for a long time and everything's turned to slush, but I'm sure it'll hold the weight!"

Certainly not in May.

Seriously ... what kind of chemicals were misfiring in the guy's brainpan to cook up the statement "Hey! I'll take my D-6 over yonder."

I've heard of suicide by cop, but this Onion territory

Maybe global warming deserves some blame, too?  For all we know, that pond may have stayed frozen over until well into June 50 years ago.

Was it one of those idiots from the show "Gold Rush"?

I have been told the proper way to do this is to get the dozer going (from shore), rig ropes to the controls and cut-out switch, and let it drive itself across the frozen pond/river. You will of course want someone on the other side waiting to "catch" it.

I know people who have done this in extreme northern Minnesota.

Anyone ever watch ice road truckers or see the episode of Air Alaska where they drove a dozer over a river? This happens all the time in a safe manner, sometimes mistakes are made. Nothing to see here, move on.

Isn't that pretty much Fark's raison d'être, to point and laugh at people who do stupid things (and sometimes die as a result)?

Well, ok, you have a point there.
