Wow.  That is unexpected.  How the hell she kept this private for so long is a mystery in today's society.  I wish her the best.

what?????

some_beer_drinker: what?????

Read it.  She was a high risk for breast cancer so she had them both removed.  True story.  The link goes to the L.A. Times, an Op-Ed/story she herself wrote.

2013-05-14 01:14:54 AM
I'd say mission accomplished with the op-ed. It's got me rethinking getting tested for the genes... (because BOTH of my parents had it).

2013-05-14 01:16:39 AM
Good on her for not only taking steps to try to ensure she will be with her humongous brood for a long time, but in telling the story to maybe inspire others to get tested.  She didn't have to do that.  And given she is a sex symbol, it was a brave step.

2013-05-14 01:17:30 AM
She's a lot smarter, and more beautiful for doing that...Her children will thank her for decades.

 Brad chose well.

It's a sad thing to see any person have to go through so much, regardless of their personal fame or wealth.  But, I'm glad she was able to improve her long term health situation, and I'm very happy to see her speak out and encourage others to take the same steps, if they can.

Let's hope she can now enjoy many more healthy years with her family and colleagues.

She still gots DAT ASS.

Good for her?

Never found her that hot (i.e. "Yes would bang" but "I can find others I personally find more attractive naked and doing horrible things all over the internet").

But really, cancer isn't anything to f*ck around about.

2013-05-14 01:43:52 AM
By the description she listed on the procedure, it sounds like they were able to save her nipples.  So she basicly just had them hollowed out and refilled with implants.  If the nerves survived she will be normal and perky for a long time.  She is lucky that things have progressed as far as they have surgically.  A lot of women lose all sensation from that surgery.

According to the article, she replaced the breast tissue with implants, so she should cleave as well as ever.

Huh. Very cool she penned that and shared with everyone. Ladies, get checked out. We love your girls, but we love you more and don't want you gone. Who the heck would smack us for being dumbasses if you weren't around?

As I was reading I just kept assuming that it was a different Angelina Jolie, since both names aren't that uncommon, until I came to the Brad Pitt part and figured the chances of there being two people named after celebrities married to each other were just too ridiculously small.

Anyway, good on her for making that choice and for being willing to share her story.

Relatively Obscure: Didn't Christina Applegate do the same thing some ages ago?

Yes, but she was diagnosed with breast cancer before undergoing a double mastectomy. She underwent testing later on and was found to be a carrier of the BRCA1 gene, which increases a woman's chance of getting breast and ovarian cancer. Ms Jolie has the same faulty gene.

2013-05-14 03:31:59 AM
I am normally pretty hard on the celebritards, but she deserves real kudos. Good on you Angelina Jolie.

Couldn't she just have waited until cancer was detected there? The gene only increases the risk, it's not a guarantee.

Wow, that is crazy. Glad the procedure went well, and it's a wonder that no word about this got out before now.

I think both of their mothers died of breast cancer as well. Probably a bit of a factor in their decisions.

/Wonders what'll get her first: breast or skin cancer.

87% is close enough to a guarantee when you're talking about cancer.

Yep, this.  After all the clown-car stuff she's done with adopting a random kid from each continent, I wasn't sure how much class she had left.  But she surprised me.  She kept it private for as long as possible, didn't try to turn it into some attention-whoring PR frenzy, and now writes an informative and soulful story for people facing the same deal.

I've got nothing but respect for her.  And I hope it doesn't affect her acting career.

B.L.Z. Bub: Couldn't she just have waited until cancer was detected there? The gene only increases the risk, it's not a guarantee.

With BRCA-induced hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome, by the time the cancer is detected it's usually too late.  The cancer that forms is typically so aggressive that stopping it is a slim chance at best.

The other thing to keep in mind is that what she stood to gain by keeping her breasts (and ovaries, most likely) is minimal.  The spate of adoptions pretty much guarantees she's not that concerned with producing kids of her own, and thanks to the miracle of implants she doesn't really have to worry about her breasts looking any worse... in public anyway.  Hell, in private too, depending on how carefully they did the surgery.

And that really is the other thing: with an emergency mastectomy they quite often have to just scoop shiat out with minimal regard to leaving behind something that can be rebuilt easily.  If its preventative however they can do things a bit more carefully.  Hell, they might have put the implants in during the same surgery for all I know.
