Not sure about fearsome but I do hear they are hard to find.

I was only there for a few weeks and have holidayed in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia previously so there wasn't too much of a culture shock.

Climbing the stairs to a waterslide at a water park and counting the number of rails in the fence that were rusted clean through was interesting :)

I was surprised by the number of women in full burqas as opposed to just headscarves

Trying to get any actual work done while dealing with third party companies, language barriers and plain differences in work cultures was the only real annoyance
That and dodgy taxi drivers. but they're hardly unique to malaysia :)

They should form an alliance with the Butt-Naked Brigade, maybe get some real movement going.

Cool - reading The Windup Girl for the second time, probably a bit artificially on edge about Malaysia, Thailand, though completely fascinated by that region. Completely different culture for me.

Go to Phuket, Thailand . Super cheap and incredibly gorgeous. Law enforcement there has pretty harsh penalties for any locals who mess with tourists. The locals are plenty friends and there are a lot of Aussies to pound down lager with. Just don't try to bang any of the locals. Way too much gender-bending, I'd be too paranoid of the ol' tranny surprise.

I wanted to visit Lolong before he died but that's too far south for me.  I stay out of Mindanao and I recommend any non-Filipino that values their freedom to do the same.  There are plenty of other great places to visit in the Philippines.  Stay out of Mindanao.  If for some dumb reason you do decide to visit Mindanao, I highly recommend you become a Muslim first.  They might lower the ransom for a fellow Muslim.

I much preferred Thailand to Malaysia. Though Vietnam is probably again if you like venturing outside the resort areas.

And 5 days spent riding a dirt bike through some of the remote parts of Cambodia is probably still my favourite experience on a holiday ever.

It is a fascinating region. Lots of beauty. Some ugliness. By and large great people. Awesome food especially if you're prepared to eat off the street stalls.

There's definitely a different value placed on life though. You have to look after your own safety because there aren't nearly so many rules and laws to do it for you

Never been to Indonesia. I have friends who love Bali and some who swear they're never going back.

I'd highly recommend Vietnam

Or Cambodia if you're not fussed about 5 star travel. Angkor wat and the surrounding temples are incredible

Laos is supposed to be good too though I haven't been.

As for Malaysia: I didn't find KL an exciting city. ( Which is all i've seen) There's plenty of shopping etc if that's your thing. But it felt too new, too westernised to me.

Yeah, I think Thailand would be a pretty amazing trip - both Bangkok and maybe Phuket. The wife and I have been all over the US, Western Europe, and the wife grew up doing archaeological digs with her dad all over the Middle East. Neither one of us has been to Asia, and the tourist scene in Japan and China just isn't appealing. Thailand just seems more interesting.

I' not gonna studman69 that pic, because I would (fist, angry , god, whatever), but she does remind me of one of those 'giant head on a stick' type things they have in Asian parades, and it wierds me out just a little.

After reading the article and seeing the pics, for some reason the movie "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" came to mind. And that scene where they sing "tight! Tights! YES!"

My father-in-law would just open the Ark of the Covenant and melt them down a bit before a dig.

//he also had her dig up pottery casks with still-born babies - burial casks - from the upper classes - good, solid work for a 12 year old girl and grad grunts

My wife and I honeymooned in Phuket. It's very nice.

I have a motorcycle license so we hired a scooter and ride ourselves around. Highly recommended if you can. There are some truly spectacular spots in little coves around the place we wouldn't have found otherwise.

It also let us stay out outside the Patong area. So we could go in and deal with crowds and tourists when we wanted and stay where it was quiet when we felt like it

Bangkok is well worth the trip. Plenty to see and do.

I'd recommend learning at least a few words of Thai. People responded really well to even basic please and thank you being said in Thai. And touts who wouldn't leave you alone when told 'no' got the message when we said no in Thai
