If Hipsters are the people who buy from small independent business instead of box stores, support local farmers instead of buying their food at Sam's Club and buy used or made in America clothes instead of cheap imported articles from Asia while spending their free time doing a random hobby they enjoy and creating something instead of just consuming whatever content is on TV i think the country would be a lot better with more hipsters.

It's the holier-than-thou attitude that comes with that package that people don't like and the fact they are usually living off of mommy and daddy still.

It really doesn't have much to do with age... if you are preoccupied with being ironic or favoring obscure things for the sake of their obscurity, you have something of the hipster within you... no matter the date on your birth certificate or the ZIP code on your mail.

So I go back to my hometown and stop by an old dive bar I used to frequent cause they used to have $1.50 well drinks.  I go in and it's.... well it went hipster.  They've now got 175 different kinds of bourbon which was good because I wanted a double bourbon and coke to get a buzz started.  Handlebar mustache behind the bar doesn't want to "ruin" the bourbon with sugary mixer.  I grew up close enough to a distillery to smell the mash every single day of my childhood.  I've forgotten more about bourbon than this twait will ever know.  But I wanted a cheap drunk and he's being petulant about his precious elixer being adulterated.  So I ask him if he's so particular, why is everyone there drinking farking Stroh's and PBR?  He said that different those are "blue collar beers".  So I told him to make me a blue collar highball before I shaved his mustache the hard way.  He came to his senses after that.

Nah, fark that. Hipsters are annoying. And not because they're "different." Today's hipster is just an over-eager and painfully self-aware parody of the bohemian culture that took form about a half-generation back. That was pretty much my reference group growing up.

I think I get them just fine. I just don't like them...

A hipster is someone who chooses to live a lifestyle of intentional, self-aware cultural irony, whenever possible. It's the knowledge that they are doing something "different" for the sake of doing something different, not because it's something they likely truly enjoy. It's only the "otherness" that is enjoyed and that enjoyment lasts only long enough until the next gimmick comes along. Or, more accurately, the next gimmick is "remembered" since hipster cultural icons are from the past.

Example...someone never really played video games growing up but got their hands on a NES and some games. They hook it up on their TV (very likely an 80-90s model CRT) and have people over to play it at a party while drinking mint juleps and Pabst Blue Ribbons. Because "look at us, we have iPhones but are playing a 30 year old piece of technology and drinking funny drinks. Isn't this just zany?"

It's probably hipster to use the word "zany" too.

Hipsters are fine. People who self-identify over how 'obscure' they can be, drop their hobbies and complain once they become mainstream, and favor obscure activities just because they're obscure are annoying.

CSB: I knew someone (a self-identified hipster) who forced her boyfriend to stand there while she went antiquing, degraded and refused to participate in his hobbies because they were too mainstream, refused to go to social get-togethers if they included 'mainstream' stuff (popular movies, video games, etc), and altogether was dismissive of anything that didn't directly interest her. I spent time with her on a few occasions, and it was always what activity she wanted to force on us, not majority rules, not even trying to compromise.

People like her are the reason that all hipsters, no matter how humble, genuine, or laid back, have a bad rep.

Bingo.

The hipsters I've known over the years were broke as anything, bohemian because they were broke, creative types. They were also some of the most fool hardy brave people that I know. They would go to the worst neighborhoods because the rents were cheap and rent all the apartments and go to work into making the neighborhood a habitable place. Williamsburg was a blight that Detroit wouldn't venture to after dark before the hipsters moved in.

You want to rebuild the war torn Middle East? Start a rumor among hipsters that the rents there are dirt cheap, there's plenty of empty stores to set up shop and the local delis are good. Then sit back and watch them work. In a decade time, Afghanistan will look like Portland.

I doubt "not liking them" is the reasoning behind taxing the rich. I'm fairly certain it has more to do with the fact that the rich have abused the system to the point of there being a disparity between the classes that calls for action considering the upper-class tax evasion professionals have kind of tilted the table and rigged the game in a manner that only include more for them and less for everybody else.

People are free to adopt whatever uniform/code of conduct suits them. But when someone is so obviously a conformist, it's more than a little annoying that they loudly insist they are not.

Nonconformity Linked To Peer Pressure

ATHENS, GA-According to a study released Tuesday by the University of Georgia's Institute For Social Research, a strong link exists between nonconformity and peer pressure among teenagers and young adults.

Commissioned in 1995 to examine the growing trend of nonconformity among 13- to 21-year-olds, the three-year study found that 85 percent of U.S. youths actively defy standard societal norms-adopting "alternative" modes of language, behavior and dress-as a means of winning the acceptance and approval of their peers.

"Kids today are told, over and over, by their classmates, their siblings, and images on TV and in magazines, that normal, mainstream behavior isn't 'cool,'" institute director and study co-chair Iris Evantine said. "The message these kids are receiving is: 'C'mon, don't you want to be different like us?' Sadly, kids who resist these pressures to be different are usually ostracized. For the average teenager these days, the pressure not to do what everyone else does is enormous, and often unbearable."

It seems like youth culture goes in waves in a sense:

Hippies - Don't care about money, want to live life
Yuppies - Care about money and status
Grunge - Don't care about money (or anything else)
Hipsters - Care about image and buying obscure things (so, money)

So, the next wave will be somebody who doesn't care about image and money.  And we have the transitional periods in between where everybody is confused.

Of course, once people get beaten down by the real world a little, they all kind of merge into something different (usually around 40) and make fun of the new "youth culture"

They already pay that. Trendy upscale clothing shops have people scouring second-hand stores, flea markets and yard sales. They buy old beat-up clothing, slap a "Hand-picked Just For You!" sticker on it, and sell a $2 shirt for $70. It that isn't an idiot tax, I don't know what is.

Yeah.  I've vistied people in West Virginia and personally I'm cool with fiscal conservatives.

Hipster is a deragatory word that's used to describe people that are the 'other'... in my neighborhood hipsters are usually artists, theater, music, culinary, beer, fashion interested people.  No body in their right mind would call each other a hipster, we describe one another by our interests.

What I was trying to say is it's an insult and even the survey is VERY biased to use a term like SOULLESS.
"soullessly appropriate cultural tropes from the past for their own ironic amusement."

It's an old person insulting the youth, saying that when THEY appropriated the old culture, it was SOULFUL.
But now, it's done SOULLESSLY.,, it's an insult by someone who does not know who a hipster is really.
