The vast majority of people who hate hipsters have no farking idea what a hipster is in the first place. It's one of the top 3 most misused word on the internet, along with emo and troll.

I'm just saying boxer briefs are far more comfortable and the elastic doesn't wear out nearly as fast.

Probably the same 42% that thinks they will have to use guns to defend against those big city folk.
I don't think hipsters are what people imagine them to be.

Mate, I like you, but you really need to drop bringing the right/tea parties into everything.

i  think that the broader point is valid though - "hipster" is just this amorphous word that people use to describe a general idea of something they hate, like "liberals" and "conservatives"

Yeah.  I've vistied people in West Virginia and personally I'm cool with fiscal conservatives.

Hipster is a deragatory word that's used to describe people that are the 'other'... in my neighborhood hipsters are usually artists, theater, music, culinary, beer, fashion interested people.  No body in their right mind would call each other a hipster, we describe one another by our interests.

What I was trying to say is it's an insult and even the survey is VERY biased to use a term like SOULLESS.
"soullessly appropriate cultural tropes from the past for their own ironic amusement."

It's an old person insulting the youth, saying that when THEY appropriated the old culture, it was SOULFUL.
But now, it's done SOULLESSLY.,, it's an insult by someone who does not know who a hipster is really.

in the year 2013, anyone under the age of 30 who wears clothes or likes music or food is a "hipster"

So since being a hipster is apparently not thought of as cool, would it be OK to like hipsters ironically then?

Of course, going "commando" is cheaper and allegedly more comfortable, but comes with its own set of risks.

It really doesn't have much to do with age... if you are preoccupied with being ironic or favoring obscure things for the sake of their obscurity, you have something of the hipster within you... no matter the date on your birth certificate or the ZIP code on your mail.

2013-05-13 02:14:28 PM
Hmmm, I dunno---to me, at least, it's pretty clear what a hipster is so I'm not sure why anyone would say " the vast majority of people who hate hipsters have no farking idea what a hipster is in the first place".

2013-05-13 02:15:15 PM
I unironically self-identify as a hipster in order to transcend the irony of my necessary 9 to 5 capitalist existence while promoting snobbery and egomania.

I also have a beard, but it is often shamed by the luscious and lustrous offerings found around here.

Yup.  It's people they have not met, but in theory they do not like them... like 'those big city liberals' or those 'redneck conservatives' etc.  "Stop liking what I don't like!"

I think hippos are kinda cute when they're dancing like in those Disney movies, but I've heard the real life onrs will kill you for nothing!

So I guess I see why people are not liking them so much...

I have a beard pretty much since '98 because it waas farking cold outside in the UP of Michigan without it.

Now I keep it because whenever I did the rare shave it all off, everyone around me told me to never shave again.

Seriously. My friends, coworkers, my wife, my kids, all of them look in horror and tell me to never ever shave off my beard.

meat0918: special tax for being so annoying

They already pay that. Trendy upscale clothing shops have people scouring second-hand stores, flea markets and yard sales. They buy old beat-up clothing, slap a "Hand-picked Just For You!" sticker on it, and sell a $2 shirt for $70. It that isn't an idiot tax, I don't know what is.

It seems like youth culture goes in waves in a sense:

Hippies - Don't care about money, want to live life
Yuppies - Care about money and status
Grunge - Don't care about money (or anything else)
Hipsters - Care about image and buying obscure things (so, money)

So, the next wave will be somebody who doesn't care about image and money.  And we have the transitional periods in between where everybody is confused.

Of course, once people get beaten down by the real world a little, they all kind of merge into something different (usually around 40) and make fun of the new "youth culture"

Clearly, those Americans have never read the constitution or passed their civics exam to think that a group can be taxed purely because someone does not like them.  It would fall under a type of Bill of Attainder, which is prohibited by Congress.

I don't know how wearing a wool beanie and cardigan sweater when its 90 degrees out all the while drinking PBR could ever be construed as "hip" - but alas......

If Hipsters are the people who buy from small independent business instead of box stores, support local farmers instead of buying their food at Sam's Club and buy used or made in America clothes instead of cheap imported articles from Asia while spending their free time doing a random hobby they enjoy and creating something instead of just consuming whatever content is on TV i think the country would be a lot better with more hipsters.

This is my first year with one (I am 32), my wife made me grow it to see how it looks.  Its annoying because my mustache does not connect to my chops and the bottom of my neck the grain kind of circles around so it is hard to keep trimmed.  One of these days I will get really annoyed with it and just go back to the "covering the chin" look I have had since HS.
