Actually thinking about moving back to the wife's country because our mixed kids would be unusual there and hence move to the top of the social totem pole.  Here it's just "meh".

If you check more than one box when the instructions say to check only one, they should just classify them as the stupid race.

Oh noes, when Adam Carolla finds out about this, he's going to have yet ANOTHER rant about "that person where you just can't tell what they are".

But, in his words, racism is over because we have a black president.

You Are All Sheep: J. Frank Parnell: There is really just one race: the human one.

Lies.  A dalmation and a pitbull are both dogs, but significantly different.  Every 'race' of human is slightly different (on the whole) from the other in one way or another.

Dogs belong to the same species grouping just as humans belong to the same species grouping.  By being part of hte same species there can be different character traits but at the end of the day they are still canines or humans are still humans.  The use of race is a way of grouping people into sections based on physical traits but at the end of the day there is only one human race.   Race has no taxonomic significance: all living humans belong to the same species, Homo sapiens and subspecies, Homo sapiens sapiens. The sooner we get ouf of this race issue the better and accept the fact that we are all humans and that we just have different physical traits which helps to add to diversity.

The last time I checked, people of all races were eligible to vote in Amerika since 1872, and women were allowed to vote since 1920.

Since the Senseless is to enumerate for voting apportionment, I see no reason to advise my government of either my race or my sex.

I also see no reason to tell them how many toilets I have, what kind of sewer I use, how I heat my home, or anything else not directly connected with voter enumeration.

The more information they have, the more trouble they cause.

We're all sub-breeds of the same species. Much like all dogs are Canus canus, but not all dogs are the same breed, due to population segregation, geographic isolation, and adaptation to various environmental factors.

spentmiles: I'm technically white.  All of my grandparents are white, my parents are white, and my skin is white.  But I always felt like something was off, like I wasn't what I appeared to be.  I started feeling this way really young, too.  I was at my middle school's homecoming dance and they invited the high school drum line to perform.  I don't know exactly what it was, but something deep inside of me awoke as I listened to the pounding rhythms.  I began to dance, throwing my arms back and my chest out, kicking my legs high.  Soon I was lost in a daze, spinning, spinning, wild.  When the drums stopped, everyone was staring at me.  I ran out of the auditorium and hid.

From that day forward, I didn't feel at home in my own skin.  I started doing "black" things, like buying $450 dollar sun glasses with the money my mom gave me for my car insurance.  I made the school bus driver stop and let me off at random places along the route.  I even started being excruciatingly nice to white people until they left the room.  Just last month, I got a job, worked for a week to get a paycheck, and then quit.

It's terrible.  I feel like the world's biggest racist.  I don't even know if these are the kinds of things that black people do.  My parents never let me have any black friends, so I have to go off my best guesses and what my uncle told me about them.  As for real black people, I just seem to piss them off.

It's sad because when someone says, "I knew I was gay in the first grade," people believe them.  But when I tell people that I've always been black, they laugh in my face.  I wish I could move to a place where hip-hop replaced hypocrisy and all people lived under one love.

I think you fell pretty short of a laugh on that one.  Better luck next time.

I'm fairly amused by the fact that, as a biracial woman, I'm more "pure blooded" than my euromutt husband. My lineage can be traced to African slaves brought to the Caribbean, and southern Italian tailors. Whereas my husband is mostly Italian and polish, with a smattering of German, Russian Jew, Scottish, English, and blah blah blah WHITE PEOPLE.

You Are All Sheep: Lies. A dalmation and a pitbull are both dogs, but significantly different. Every 'race' of human is slightly different (on the whole) from the other in one way or another.

They really aren't significantly different genetically, and humans are even more similar.

We should either stop referring to all humans as members of the human race, or stop calling different colored humans different races. The way it is now is just confusing to people. Alternately we could just stop using the word race altogether and stick to biological classification for such things.

NO NOESSSS THE HORROR! -  Old white people everywhere.Racial politics is very arbitrary and ludicrous.

My great-aunt once got into a heap of trouble for daring to dance with Italian boy!! My Great-Grandmother was furious and sent her sons (Great-Aunt's siblings) down to the dance hall to drag her back home. The added irony is that Great-Grandma was hardcore Irish Catholic with 11 kids.

Irish, Italian, and Jewish people were not considered "white" at the turn of the century.

My Dad told me that when he was working as a bank teller in the 60's and 70's Italians where "discouraged" from working in the industry, unless they changed their names to something WASP-like. For some reason my IRISH Dad thought this wasn't a big deal, until I mentioned "No Irish Need Apply", he shut up after that.

devilEther: What most of you seem to be taking lightly is no less than the genocide of the Caucasoid race.

I'm OK with this.

I am of lightly mixed race. There is mention of the "Indian blood" on my dad's side about 4 generations back. It's the type of "Indian" from late-1800s Kentucky that leads to dark, curly hair. My wife's family is English, Russian, German, and Polish... primarily.

Our kids are blonde-haired and blue-eyed. I don't pretend to understand genetics.

varmitydog: Oriental= colored

A lot of North-eastern Asians are way paler than most "white" people. It's funny.

/My skin color is kind of an olive gray, but that's because I get no sunlight exposure at all.

2013-05-13 11:42:37 AM

Notabunny: This has always confused me. By 'race' we mean skin color, right? Why not just say "skin color"? I self-identify as Light Peach.

I think people want skin color to identify culture, not race, which is really the problem. Like introverts and extroverts, people want things a certain way and it's the culture clash: music, dress, customs, laws, religions, that really separate us as humans. Culture has that "can't judge a book by its cover" issue, but skin color let's us give it our best go, which is like jumping 3 feet in the long jump.

OminousAnonymous: Maybe someone can explain... aren't we all the same race?  Are we not all homo sapien?

Homo sapiens is a species designation. The word race means whatever the person using it wants it to mean, so its impossible to have any meaningful discussion about it.

As an analogy someone else used though, all dogs from a chihuahua to a pit bull to a great Dane are from the same species 'Canis lupus familiaris'. We describe the physical differences between them using the word 'breed'.

Race was probably intended to have a similar descriptive purpose for humans, but politics have made it effectively useless, so there is no politically-acceptable way to describe the differing appearances and characteristics of groups of humans.

I think all dogs are now Canis Lupus.these days. And the breed analogy fails: we don't different kinds of humans for specific tasks. Race has always been a silly concept (Black, Quadroon, Octaroon) and should go away, except where it involves legal procedures and Federal benefits.(which is also a silly concept: Gender is a race?)
