Slappy McLongstockings: Oh and BTW--when your wife stop using a book to justify her actions that have led to the death of thousands so she can feel better about her life and pretend that she will see her loved ones once she is dead herself, perhaps there is an adult conversation to be had.

Seriously. Why can't the Bible be more like Kennedy, Clinton. and Obama who have no innocent blood on their hands at all?

/yes, every single problem ever is the bible's fault.

Wait, what book? This one?

THIS, Mao and Stalin have killed more people in the name of Atheism than the Holocaust, the crusades, the conquest of the Americas, the Spanish Inquisition, and the witch hunts combined.

Not atheism. In the name of blind following of unproved, untested theories. There is far more religious methodology than atheism in Hitler, Marx, Mao and Stalin.

Can your wife tell me what parts of your book NOT to believe in?  It's a large book and I only have so much time to read it over again.

According to that same bible, his wife shouldn't be teaching anyone anything about it.

Oldiron_79: Mao and Stalin have killed more people in the name of Atheism

Stalin wasn't an atheist. Neither was Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao, or any other 20th century dictator. Noe once did any of them rant in any of their speeches that their enemies must be eliminated for the sake of secular humanism and rational inquiry. Rather, what they did was establish systems of moral absolutes with state theocracies, oppressive social obedience and strict political doctrine replacing scripture. Essentially: Political ideology as church, with themselves as God.

The whole "who committed more atrocities" argument is a mutually assured destruction debate tactic anyway. Do you really want to count them all up? Christians wiped out two entire continents and an entire race of people. And not only did they commit genocide to others, they committed genocide to themselves (the greatest enemy to Christians has always been other Christians: Quite possibly up to 50 million in just the wars of the Reformation....20 million in the 30 years war alone). But do these numbers make any argument better? Do you feel better about your side if you can tally it up and show that your beliefs only killed a few million less than their beliefs? Does that make it more right?

Today's Christians should not have to answer for every past atrocity done in the name of Christianity, just as today's atheists should not have to answer for every past atrocity done in the name of atheism (which is technically none...but even if you throw in Stalin, Hitler, Mao and Pol Pot or anyone else who wasn't Christian or an atheist, that still doesn't justify either argument).

wrs1864: Jim_Callahan: moments after inking the final two verses of the King James Bible.

So... not the actual bible then.

There are people who believe that the KJV is the only "real" bible.   That god felt that the copies of the bibles that existed had too many mistakes and god divinely inspired those that did the KJV translation so that it was the new, perfect bible.    Gotta love how some people think.

Of course it is the only real bible the KJV because if it's not Scottish it's crap

Well said. I would like to add that any time you give power over your own thoughts to another person or institution, you allow that person to use you for their own personal agenda. Belief without question is dangerous.

RedPhoenix122: any time you give power over your own thoughts to another person or institution, you allow that person to use you for their own personal agenda.

In the case of his wife, it is not someone else's agenda, but her own. She seeks a way to be forgiven for the deaths of thousands so she can live the superficial life she does...that we all do.  We are just giving them diseases so we can have the things we like.

Some just know that there is no forgiveness....this has to do with present atrocities.

Great Janitor: A friend of my explained to me when I was in my teens (older family friend, not another teenager) that prior to the Council of Nicea the Christian Church actually believed in reincarnation.

Let me stop you right here. Christianity is a diverse faith. It's always been a diverse faith. Prior to the Council of Nicea, some Christians believed in reincarnation. Many still do today. Some people had alternative gospels, including works such as those found in the Nag Hammdi Library that had alternative views of the characters in the Gospel myths. But they weren't universally recognized and confined to outlying sects.

To say that Christianity was uniform before the Council and that the Council changed that is wrong. It codified one set of beliefs into Orthodoxy, but different sects have always had and will always have different beliefs.

INeedAName: Great Janitor: Pointy Tail of Satan: You mean the distorted, inaccurate Bible in English, written for those too lazy to learn to read in Hebrew, Latin and Greek?

I think they mean the Bible post Council of Nicea where they decided what was going to be in the Bible as we know it today, and what was going be considered non-canon.  A friend of my explained to me when I was in my teens (older family friend, not another teenager) that prior to the Council of Nicea the Christian Church actually believed in reincarnation.  The Council of Nicea ditched it because if your followers thought that they had another life, then they could screw around in this life and use the next one for a chance to get into Heaven.  Tell them that you have only one life and now they are determined to get into Heaven on their one and only chance.  He was also one of the first people to explain to me the possibility that Mary Magdaline wasn't a whore but a rather important woman in the church around the time of Christ.  The Council of Nicea purposely reduced her to a whore to keep women subservient.  Something that would be a bit difficult if the Bible explained that Christ had a woman who was as equal as the men in his company.   The Council also pretty much deleted everything from the holy texts that they didn't like or agreed with or could pretty much threaten their political standing.

While it's wonderful to have people in your life to educate you on things, did you bother to ever look any of this up? My wife just finished her first year of seminary and the amount of times during the week I find out that something someone once told me about the Bible turns out to blatantly false, is pretty interesting.

Ishkur: miss diminutive: He should have made it a choose-your-own-adventure book:
-> If you'd like Samson to smite the Philistines by tying 100 foxes together and setting them on fire, turn to page 117.
-> If you'd like Samson to go biblical on a pagan temple using the jawbone of an ass, turn to page 843.

Did anyone watch the miniseries? ...that was the part that cheesed me off the most. Samson killed 1000 Philistines with that jawbone. ONE THOUSAND! I was expecting him to mow through guys like John Carter, but he only kills, like, four guys then runs away.

What the fark was that? Where's the carnage?!

it never helps to view the hero as a psychotic genocidal maniac. It is often the problem when viewing historical figures through a modern prism, that most the people who watched the show have no real understanding of cultural norms and society back during the time. So they try and white wash events to make it look better. Also a lack of budget doesn't help.
