It manages to be more offensive than this, and they even went to the effort to have him wear a traditional native bird hat. Perhaps it would have been better to have some italian grunt in stroke-victim Hulk speak.

If there isn't a scene where Tonto puts his ear on the ground and says "Buffalo come," I'm demanding my money back.

Because I want to hear Johnny Depp deliver that punchline.Because I'm geared for it.

You know what  get over it.  I got Indian blood in me and i'm the whitest white man you will ever see.  At some point and time you have to accept whats happened to you has nothing to do with your race and everything about how you have handled your life.  Where is it written that their is a right to not be offended?

Sounds like they should have just hired a Puerto Rican and stuck feathers in his hair.

I think we've made it abundantly clear that we don't give a shiat what the Indians feel about how they're portrayed. I lost two bills at the Hard Rock casino last week so we're even.

An Italian pass himself off as a Native American? That would never work.

So they get portrayed as a stereotype, just like every other culture. It's ok for movies to stereotype the Irish, English, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, etc but we get to native americans and suddenly it's not ok? Where is their outrage at the Lucky Charms mascot?

2013-05-12 09:53:46 PM
If you say this is no big deal (I don't think it is), then you should have no problem with the Redskins keeping their name, right?

2013-05-12 09:55:51 PM
Wow, this summer is not kind to Indians. Khan is played by a foppish English guy and the other kind of Indian is played by Johnny Depp. Maybe it's payback for all the outsourcing and losses to casinos.

2013-05-12 09:58:01 PM
So what they are trying to say is that people will actually go see this turd?

2013-05-12 10:00:11 PM
After reading the article, I have reservations about seeing this movie.

2013-05-12 10:00:58 PM
Johnny Depp could get small-pox and die for this movie and people would still biatch.

2013-05-12 10:01:44 PM
What I don't understand is how he can be called "The Lone Ranger" when he goes around with Tonto. He's not alone.

Ummm, hate to tell you this but there are no such things as leprechauns so I don't know who you think should be outraged.  If you are implying that all Irish are leprechauns, then I am offended

As for this movie, it is possible to have an incorrect depiction and not be offensive.

Probably only offensive to sensitive white people.

I'm whiter than you are.  When my skin is so white, Snow White looks tanned by comparison.

Does he run a casino in the film?

Did anyone rtfa? It sounds like one of those white people are preemptively offended things and one Native American who hasn't seen it yet said it better not be offensive.

Basically, subby trolled your asses.

Ding ding ding, we have a winnar! As usual it's the overly sensitive white folks being outraged on behalf of someone else.

TONTO means fool in spanish, and kemosabe is a bastardization of "he who knows, understands in spanish" and depp is a jackass from Daytona Beach who lucked into an acting career.

And the crying Indian, was a Sicilian born in Louisiana, in Gueydan, home of popcorn rice.

I'll be seeing it because it looks like it might be fun.

Don't worry, Disney will do to Star Wars what they just did to The Lone Ranger.

Mark my words. This movie is the going to be the dog of the summer. The Lone Ranger  is yesterday's hero. There is zero interest in him. I grew up on the Ranger but I'm farking old. He's been off TV for more than twenty years. My generation had a GREAT Lone Ranger in Clayton Moore. Who the bleep is the guy playing the Ranger in this mess?  The last time they made a Ranger movie it tanked so bad the actor who played him (Clinton Spilsbury) NEVER WORKED AGAIN! Perhaps if the director had not wasted enough money to make  five films it would have a chance of making its cost back but this is a monument to the megalomania of the director. No one will care about Johnny Depp's portrayal because after the first week no one will be seeing it.

Jay Siverheel's Tonto was a product of its time but he brought an honest dignity and sincerity to the role. I can see Depp matching that but the actor portraying the Ranger is a non-entity and in the final analysis if the Ranger sucks the movie will suck.

If it wasn't offensive I would be greatly concerned.

Because "Last Surviving Ranger" didn't have the same ring to it.

Well, there aren't any other WHITE people around.  So it's like being alone.

2013-05-12 10:33:34 PM
I don't know that I am offended as much as kind of embarrassed for the people involved that such a antiquated old chestnut like the Lone Ranger is getting a major release but this movie probably isn't for my demographic. personally, I am just glad that Howard Zinn is dead so he can't write or have published anything talking about how ludicrous it is, etc. Basically, I am just glad Howard Zinn is dead.

39 year old Farkers that want to take their kids, I guess.

I was 7 when the 1981 version came out. It was glorious.
Apparently I was the only person on Earth that thought so.

Michelle Shining Elk, a member of the Colville Tribes of the Pacific Northwest who works in the film industry, said the latest depiction will give the wrong perception of American Indians, "that we are uneducated, irrelevant, non-contributors to society living in teepees out on the Plains."

And you can tell all that from the trailers?

^ That.

Believe it or don't this was almost killed in it's budgetary stage because the director originally wanted 300 million. They settled for around 230 mil. I'm willing to wager a small amount that by the end of the year whoever it was who greenlit this will be updating his/her resume.

I'm still outraged Depp didn't accurately portray pirate culture.

2013-05-12 10:43:12 PM
It's offensive because Gore Verbinski can still get hired for an obscene fee despite that god-awful 3rd Pirates movie.

It took a special kind of talent to take a trilogy with two very good installments and end it with a 3-hour snorefest.

And no, I don't count "On Stranger Tides." That couldn't have been a more obvious cash grab if Depp had his entire costume made of hundred dollar bills.

Yeah. It won't at all surprise me that everything I said upthread turns out to be way off the mark and this ends up making Avatar profits.

That's why I rarely gamble irl. As william goldman said so long ago, "Nobody Knows Nothin.'"

I remember that I didn't entirely loathe the 1981 movie when i say it. I was 12 and saw it on videotape at a Church function. Haven't seen it since.

Google her name. She seems to be one of those people who make a living out of being offended.

/she's kind of cute though.
