O'Conner said her daughter is really shy and has been too scared to go to school because of teasing. But she plans on taking her daughter on Monday and stay with her the whole day if she has to do that.

No, don't do this. She has friends now watching more closely for her, and before the other girls get back there needs to be some procedures in place to assure as minimal contact as possible such as directing them down other hallways.

Her mother said the school officials told her they couldn't do anything if it was just words.

Bullsh*t. You can minimize contact between periods, during lunch, and in classes as well as have some interventions via teachers not only for consequences for the girls but to support this girl in the case of further issues. If this continues with words, frequently, this would be bullying.

Butler transferred from North Chicago this year and has always been on the honor roll. O'Conner said she signed papers so she can skip a grade next year, but it will put her in the same class as the other two girls.

I doubt this will place them in the same classes. She is being accelerated, whereas the other girls are likely low achievers.

Road flare in principal's car  - These things happen

Some kids need a severe beating. I don't care how much horseshiat child psychologists shovel, classical conditioning works on human beings just the same as it does on animals.

You set a little girl's hair on fire? You get your head shaved and you stand in front of the lunchroom for a half hour every day holding a sign saying what you did. Inside the doors, out of your range of vision, is a button that will deliver a brief and painful electric shock to the offenders. Any student who wants to can press it up to three times each day.

SilentStrider: Charges and jail time for arson, aggravated assault, and attempted murder. These things happen.

This is what I was thinking. The crazy girls should be in jail.

Guzman said police are moving forward with an investigation despite the principal just calling for a report of the incident.

The world is full of people who, when these things happen, say "these things happen".  And that's why they happen!!

As usual, principals take the side of the bullies because they were and are bullies themselves.

I'd have called the cops the instant I heard that my kid's hair was set on fire and she was punched.  Never trust a schooler to report anything.

Guess they would have to kill her to get expelled.

I had a strange childhood.

Throughout the late 80's, 90's and early 00's I had an ongoing war with a gang of bully's. One of the kid's, whose parents owned a towing company, threw a bunch of flares in my yard and almost burned down my parent's house. To this day I don't know why my parents didn't call the cops. I later stabbed that same kid with an umbrella (with sharp metal tip) and nobody did anything about it.

Spent a lot of time in school suspension for violence. Banned from the bus. I was even forced by the school to apologize to a bully for defending myself once. I console myself with the fact that they had to jump me as a group and were scared to get caught alone on the street.

These days, the stuff we did would be jail or prison.

Exactly. I don't always agree with the police presence in schools, but this is one of those occasions where they should have been immediately called.

So, pointing your finger/pencil/potato at another student and saying "BANG" will get you expelled from school, BUT setting another student's hair on fire is just a 3 day suspension?

Unreal

It should be legal for this girl to go all colombine. If you refuse to deal with bullies then you get. O sympathy when the bullies respond

Gergesa: It is time we consider installing Arena's in schools.  These sort of matters really need to be settled through martial prowess.  The victor shall eat the heart of the fallen to gain their strength and the rest of the body will be sent to the cafeteria to be used in making pizza's.

Arena's ... pizza's?! I think someone needs to go back to grammar school and learn how to spell plural words.

/And, yes, I'm a grammar Nazi, even outside of Fark.

I say expel the girl/s that did it once proven. And if it's proven there is a pattern of bullying from this girl or girls, then all the better. Criminal charges yes but I don't think attempted murder, as commented by another Farker, will fly. Don't know that aggravated assault will either as there was no mention of serious bodily injury. Burnt hair is cosmetic and a punch to the forehead most likely will be simple assault. But a simple three day suspension is a joke.

I don't really know the procedure when it's just words.  But that's not really relevant, because it's no longer just words, it's felony assault.

The school district where I work gives out 3 day OSSs for possessing tobacco products, which includes lighters. Fighting gets kids 5-20 days OSSs, depending on the severity of the assault (and if it's more than 10 days, the case is then kicked over to the district office to determine if the kid should be expelled or not). Furthermore, if the assault results in serious injury to a person or damage to an object/property, the kid is given a shiny pair of chained bracelets and driven to the local jail.

So if this had happened in my school district, I have a feeling the girls with the lighter would be taking a little ride downtown. The three day OSS they were given would have only covered having the lighter.

tldr: how the hell does the principal think a 3 day suspension is sufficient enough for trying to immolate someone?

INeedAName: As someone who works in a high school, this shiat does happen. I try and stick to the problems between male students. The ladies be crazy...

THIS. The guys will usually back off if barked at long enough (apparently, I'm a pretty scary 5'4 woman when I'm in discipline mode). The girls will continue until the SRO shows up.
