msP: is... is this woman for real? the police consider it bad enough to merit opening a case and the principal is still saying only an "incident report" needs to be filed... wtf?

Whatthefark: Middle school girls are demons walking the Earth. If two boys have a beef, they fight after school and usually end up pals later on. When two girls have a beef, one will try the most dirty, underhanded shiat against the other one. Usually they will hold grudges that last through high school and beyond.I laugh when I hear girls mature faster than boys./I work in schools and see this drama all the time.
cmb53208: This again supports mu hypothesis that the average public school administrator in this country is a useless piece of shiat

The last time I stopped in my neighborhood dive for a quick cocktail I walked into drama of this sort involving the weight and pant size of a regular female patron. Sim Tree: msP: is... is this woman for real? the police consider it bad enough to merit opening a case and the principal is still saying only an "incident report" needs to be filed... wtf?In some places, school administrators get paid a bonus depending upon the number of crimes that occur during school year. This, of course, leads to said administrators simply failing to report crimes as they are required to.

Fark Me To Tears: FTFA: O'Conner and Butler were told both girls received three-day suspensions, but they doesn't believe that was enough."I think 10 days they might think about it," O'Conner said. "Two days off, your not really thinking about it. At any other school they would expel you."They set a girl's hair on fire. They should be expelled.
a61sun: So, pointing your finger/pencil/potato at another student and saying "BANG" will get you expelled from school, BUT setting another student's hair on fire is just a 3 day suspension?Unreal
sheep snorter: once upon a time there used to be some people you would call when you get assaulted like that./ghostbusters?//Oh its the Po-lice.///Nightsticks to beat out the fire, mandatory in some areas.
SilentStrider: Charges and jail time for arson, aggravated assault, and attempted murder. These things happen.
aevorea: The school district where I work gives out 3 day OSSs for possessing tobacco products, which includes lighters. Fighting gets kids 5-20 days OSSs, depending on the severity of the assault (and if it's more than 10 days, the case is then kicked over to the district office to determine if the kid should be expelled or not). Furthermore, if the assault results in serious injury to a person or damage to an object/property, the kid is given a shiny pair of chained bracelets and driven to the local jail.
CaptSS: I say expel the girl/s that did it once proven. And if it's proven there is a pattern of bullying from this girl or girls, then all the better. Criminal charges yes but I don't think attempted murder, as commented by another Farker, will fly. Don't know that aggravated assault will either as there was no mention of serious bodily injury. Burnt hair is cosmetic and a punch to the forehead most likely will be simple assault. But a simple three day suspension is a joke.
ReluctantPaladin: No. I'm sorry but if you're going to do all these PSA's about anti-bullying and how you should tell an adult. Then it's implied that the adults will actually do something about the bullying or at least take measures to investigate/mitigate it. You can't leave the kid hanging when they do take the brave (and it is brave, just not in a running into a burning house brave) step of telling an adult about bullying that is going on.

Firethorn: aevorea: The school district where I work gives out 3 day OSSs for possessing tobacco products, which includes lighters. When I was a kid, associating lighters with tobacco products would have gotten you a 'huh?' look.Grew up in a non-smoking family that did a lot of camping. A lighter was often easier than a match for lighting things like the propane stove. On the story - I'm a bit torn. On the one hand, we have administrators that report the stupidest things to the police and expel kids for making a 'gun' with a pop tart. On the other, here's a situation where the principal seems to NOT be calling for police intervention. Where you do draw the line? Not saying that the kids shouldn't face consequences, but the question would be whether criminal ones are appropriate.
Vangor: O'Conner said her daughter is really shy and has been too scared to go to school because of teasing. But she plans on taking her daughter on Monday and stay with her the whole day if she has to do that. No, don't do this. She has friends now watching more closely for her, and before the other girls get back there needs to be some procedures in place to assure as minimal contact as possible such as directing them down other hallways. Her mother said the school officials told her they couldn't do anything if it was just words.Bullsh*t. You can minimize contact between periods, during lunch, and in classes as well as have some interventions via teachers not only for consequences for the girls but to support this girl in the case of further issues. If this continues with words, frequently, this would be bullying.Butler transferred from North Chicago this year and has always been on the honor roll. O'Conner said she signed papers so she can skip a grade next year, but it will put her in the same class as the other two girls.I doubt this will place them in the same classes. She is being accelerated, whereas the other girls are likely low achievers.
ltr77: I think we can all agree that the most important question we should be asking about this (before ironically burning the Principal at the stake based on reports from the mother of what he said) is how are the standardized test scores at this school?
