Teachers are stupid. How many times do they try the old "something has happened and we know who did it but we're giving them the opportunity to come forward ...." ploy? Has any kid ever fallen for that?

I remember someone crammed a coat-hanger into a bathroom outlet and started a small fire. Dunno if they found the kid, but the entire middle school was seated in the hall for a lecture and the administrator said a naughty word. Best part of the week.

What an idiot. Even if the student had done what he claimed it would have been wrong to single him out in front of everyone.

I remember once in high school someone smashed a urinal. In the middle of an assembly, the principal dumps the pieces out onto the floor and says:
"This really pisses me off!"
We tried not to laugh but...

Our role is to protect every student in the district. That student is a very good student, so we all apologized about that particular situation and that won't happen again," he said.

Had he been a mediocre student, though, fark him.

What's worse is when the teachers make everybody stay in the class until the guilty person comes forward. If the guilty person doesn't come forward the whole class is punished. That always encouraged somebody to get railroaded.

Yes. There was a weekend conference at a local college when I was in HS. We were staying in the dorms with host-students. We get back to school that Monday, and there's The Meeting with all the students at the conference. They knew there was a Big College Party With Drinking and they had NAMES... If we came forward and confessed, we'd get a week of detention, end of story. If we didn't, and they had our names, we'd get a week of HOME SUSPENSION, with a BLACK MARK on our PERMANENT RECORD. This was a geeky crew (model UN) so the threat meant something. Everyone who went to the party, about 15 kids, copped to it. They had two names.

I did not cop, because I wasn't at that party. I went to a different party instead. But they never said a word about my party, so I wasn't saying shiat. As one of three students not at THE PARTY, I was the Golden Child with that group of teachers for the rest of High School.

CSS.

I like how cyber-bullying is a thing, because it primarily affects attention whores who upload pictures of themselves in their underwear, but real life bullying of nerds is still fair game.

Yes. Once we had a teacher claim he'd worked for FBI, and that they'd found material evidence of theft. Both true. He also claimed he knew people who did fingerprints for FBI, and would be sending that evidence to an FBI lab, and they would soon be able to identify who the thief was. All absurd.

But the guilty kid was ignorant enough to admit to it and got expelled for it.

Coincidentally he was a friend of mine and the next year when I moved to a different school district he happened to have been transfered to the same school, so it all worked out for me. Not so much for anyone else in that story though.

Never had a classmate fall for that specific ploy, but had one fall for another ploy that was being played at the same time.  The teach was doing the "something has happened and we know who" ploy when the kid revealed himself by stating what had happened.  The victim of the prank was the only other kid in the room that new about the prank.  That was also the only time I knew of anyone doing the cornball 'tack in the seat' prank.  I doubt that kid had the ability or motivation to finish HS.  Extra points to the teach for doubling up ploys.

The family should pull the kid out and sue the school for slander to pay for a good education that doesn't have an ass hat running it.

I actually did something with the whole class watching me that blew the electricity for the whole building (a five story block) while we were waiting for the teacher to turn up.  No one ever squealed on me but a week later I was called into the principals office and given the whole "You know why you're here, don't you?" routine. I realised instantly that if he actually had any proof he'd have said so so I played dumb and innocent. This went on for several minutes before he revealed he was talking about something totally unconnected that I genuinely knew nothing about. He gave up and I left. The end.

Bullying is the American way.  It proceeds in every environment you can imagine.  The trick is to not get caught.  Which is usually easy, because those being bullied have no power.  Hence the bullying.

With how fundamental business and the military have been to forming this country, I can't imagine it any other way.

You don't teach "anti-bullying" - instead you teach "kindness".

"I told them I would do whatever it would take to make it right," he said.
That meant assembling the freshman class a second time on the same day before the end of the school day to apologize in a public forum.

Okay, the original bullying was a stupid and evil thing for the principal to do.

But am I the only person who is awed by the fact that he recognized he had done something wrong and made a real effort to make up for it? According to the article he is also meeting with parents in order to continue making amends. This is literally the first time I have ever heard of a principal taking responsibility for their mistakes.
