(Newser)   Mother of Mother's Day came to hate it. Anna Jarvis conceived the day in 1908 and got Congress to make it official in 1914. By 1920, she was so disgusted with its commercialization that she tried in vain to get it rescinded   ( divider line

Coach McGirk:
My family gets me the one thing I want every year. Get the fark out of the house and let me watch TV or read my book or take a nap in peace. :)

I couldn't agree more.  Nothing ruins Mother's Day faster than having to spend the day with your kids.

Seriously.  Many of us would prefer a day of peace and quiet for ourselves, sans children or husbands.  Now that would be a holiday.

Therion: iamrex: As a retail florist, my business could do without it.

As a retail florist, perhaps you can explain WHY RETAIL FLORISTS DON'T DELIVER FLOWERS ON MOTHER'S DAY?

Since 'actual florist' never bothered to respond, let me try.  Independent florists have mostly been scammed, Groupon-like, into deals with national rapefarms like 1-800 FLOWERS, where you can order from the main site with apparently fantastic deals for holidays, and the local florist gets about 5 cents over the actual cost (if that) to create and deliver the Mothers Day Specials.

They are then too busy to take real orders, and often don't bother even delivering the partner orders on the expected day, and/or deliver crappy facsimiles, because it's not worth it.

The real question is why they even keep this shiat up, and all I can think of is that it might be worth the extra orders for the rest of the year.
