(Newser)   Mother of Mother's Day came to hate it. Anna Jarvis conceived the day in 1908 and got Congress to make it official in 1914. By 1920, she was so disgusted with its commercialization that she tried in vain to get it rescinded   (newser.com) divider line 53

That's so sad.

Does anyone have her address? Maybe we can send her something.

All it takes is for one person to get their mom flowers to "honour" them and you never hear the end of it.
"Mrs. Jones' son gave her flowers on Mother's Day... I like flowers too you know. It's not like I fed you three meals a day your whole life, and took care of you when you were sick... I never asked for anything in return... And what's a small bouquet of flowers to you --actually Mrs. Jones' bouquet wasn't that small-- "

As a retail florist, my business could do without it. That being said, I enjoy helping people honor their mothers and feel that if we did a better job of that every day we wouldn't need to have a holiday to do so.

I kinda hate it. I appreciate the idea, i like that my kids' Sunday School teacher had them sprout then plant sunflower seeds gave them to the moms. But, it's just another day, like your birthday, but now, like your birthday, everything has to be Pinterest-photo worthy, covered in fancifully tied mustard-colored chevron neck scarves, and captioned with a chalk board-painted reclaimed wood frame. It can't just be a handful of wild flowers, it has to be tied in vintage lace and actually the clever packaging for a diamond tennis bracelet and Himalayan Pink Salt and Tahitian Vanilla Caramel Truffles. And if you don't want that stuff in the first place, you get to see it all on Facebook, posts of pictures not even of moms and kids but of the loot they won (or probably got themselves, if only via Amazon Wish List) with the title "sooooooooooo blessed :) ;) XD

I get mom a gift card to get flowers for the yard every year. I figure why get something that's gonna get old in a week when she can have stuff growing in the yard all year?

I never spend much money on my mom.  Actually, I've been giving her the same present for the last 30 years, I send a raw egg to her third class snail mail.  By the time she gets it, it's rotten and stinks.  She gets the message.

It's only commercial if you buy into it.

My mom came to visit (we don't see each other that often. ) and we had a great Mother's Day weekend. We visited friends, she helped with my garden, we went to the corner diner for breakfast and they gave her two roses.

It's not an official holiday until Charles Schulz makes a special based on it.

Oh, wait.

cb.pbsstatic.com

Anyone find it ironic as all Hell that Schulz made a Charlie Brown Mother's Day story that doesn't even show anyone's mother at all?

No. Peanuts was surreal from the very first strip and only got weirder as Schulz got older.

I'd happily take a dime from each of those purchases.  Just one year would be enough to be set for life.

How about this, ma? You don't talk to me, I don't talk to you on this glorious day of celebration of your love for your children. Great? Perfect

Didn't someone post a different version of this article last year?

As a kitchen monkey, I've really come to despise Mother's Day with the fiery passion of a thousand suns all gone nova at once so it's a kind of balm to know the woman responsible hated it just as much, even if it was for different reasons.

Contrary to popular belief, the road to hell is NOT paved with good intentions.  It's paved with idiocy.

Gotta love my mom. I called her this morning and she said before I could say anything "don't be wishing me anything on this fake-money making holiday. You tell me you love me on a regular basis and that's all I need". Then she went on how she took her shirt off last night cause she lost at poker. Thanks mom.

Honestly, I kind of hate it.  I hate having to make an obligatory phone call to my mother every year on this day just because Hallmark tells me I HAVE TO CALL HER ON THIS EXACT DAY or else that makes me a bad son.

/It's actually the never calling on the other 364 days of the year that make me a bad son.

2013-05-12 04:20:27 PM
She must have been incredibly naive. Also, I wonder why Congress hasn't since amended it to Mother's Day UNDER GOD.

Mother's Day  wasn't invented in the US. It originated as Mothering Sunday in Europe where is always falls in March or April (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothering_Sunday).

So why did the US move it to May??

Since then, companies have bypassed the need for this sort of thing and just create holidays on their own.

White Day in Japan, for instance.

Hello. It's nice to see you all here!.

We have a few preliminaries before I ask Peter to throw open the Gates of Heaven. To start with, how many of you celebrated my birthday?

How many of you celebrated my birthday in a spirt of giving and love?

Oh,that's lovely!

How many of you spent your time whining about how other people weren't celebrating it or not celebrating it righ or waging some sort of "War on Christmas"?

Well, not so many of you. That's good. Just take a step to your right please if you didn't whine about Christmas.

Now here's the question that divides my sheep from the goats, so to speek.

How many of you celebrated Christmas in the commercial and greedy spirit in which it was recreated by my half-brother, Stan, AKA Satan?

Well, not so good. Would you please step to your left. To your other left. Thank you. Yes, that's good.

Now stand still while I pull this comically big lever and turn the sidewalk you are standing on into a Giant Fun Slide! Yaaaaay! Fun slide! This is the most fun you'll have in what's left of your life!

Good, now the rest of you can come in.

She meant well. And she tried hard to do the right thing. So God bless her soul.

Happy Mother's Day to the Mother of All Mother's Days!

The stepmom did a good deed and got most of the day off.  Took the stepson and his friend to see IronMan3 early in the day and sent the boys/men to the grocery store with a list.  Reminded father and son to call their moms and say they loved them.  I can't do the same for my mom since she's passed away. I try to keep my expectations down and my needs simple.  Good men, all of 'em, just very forgetful about Mothers' Day but since I wasn't a "mom" until about 2 years ago, I'm not worried.  But, I miss my Mom worse than I would've thought.  Ah, well, such is the cast of the dice.  Happy Mothers' Day ya'll!

I hate it, too. My mother would clip the newspaper ad for the item she wanted. My dad and I would go fetch it, and she'd farking return it anyway.

Such is the fate of high-minded true believers. Scratch one and you'll find a garden-variety crank underneath. They are completely unaware of the Law of Unintended Consequences. When one gives something to the public such as a holiday or an invention, one has to be prepared to give away control of how it's used. Otherwise, get ready for a lifetime of sulking.
