Why can't we just charge a flat sales tax on everything and stop coming up with different tax rates for every single good.

If only there were some way to legalize prostitution statewide.
We would see that the number of brothels and prostitutes is rather constant.

"Now, according to George Flint of the Nevada Brothel Association, only a handful of brothels are doing well financially, as customers turn to unlicensed independent sex workers who can charge significantly less."

Because at $1000 just get a shag with a meh-quality hooker at a brothel, who's screwing who?

That's consummate with high end escort pricing, except for the overnight. That's ...really high. But I know *nothing* about Nevada brothels. Perhaps the price escalation is for reasons similar to a strip club.

Yeah. The only alternative to outrageous prices is to have them become $2 a fark whores to crackheads. Right.

But hey, let's face it. They're standing there without any johns because most people don't want to even carry that much cash at one time on their person, let alone throw it around at some cathouse. They're not exempt from the recession any more than the other business. Maybe they need to lower their rates a bit for the duration. You mean people can't afford a thousand dollar sex romp!???????????

Farking whores should be a little more realistic.  You really shouldn't be making $3000 dollars a day or week or whatever for just spreading your legs and sucking golf balls through hoses.

Ding. A winner is you.

As I understand it, the idea is to set high enough prices where you don't get much traffic (keeps the neighbors from getting upset) but the traffic you do get is clean (keeps the girls from getting diseases) and discreet. Back in the day, this meant lots of COMDEX traffic and the like; nowadays, it mostly means high-end visiting tourists, particularly from Asia.

That said, outside of the brothels near Pahrump and the ones outside of Reno and Carson City (legislators need to get some strange every now and then too, I suppose), I don't really get how the rest of them stay in business. I mean, there are brothels in Elko and Winnemucca, but they're both small enough where no local would dare go in them - everybody else in town would know within the hour - and it's not like there's a ton of tourist traffic there. Then there are the brothels out in BFN, like the one between Elko and Idaho, which make absolutely no sense at all. I've heard there's enough hunter traffic up there to support a small restaurant or two, so that might be it, but it seems a little unlikely.

You're not buying goods, you're buying a "service".

As an ex co-owner of an escort business in Atlanta, I can add a lot to the discussion. First, it is legal to have an escort agency in Atlanta. You have to buy a license, go through a background check, and have a physical address and office, even though the escorting can be done anywhere. The escorts also have to obtain a license and background check. One thing I found is that there is no generalization of the escorts. Some were smart, some were naive. Some were cons, some were honest. Some were hard working and always on time. Some were lazy and would only work when desperate for money.

You might think it was a fun job, and sometimes it was. However, most of the time it was a pain in the ass. Girls calling at all hours of the night with all kinds of bullshiat. Drivers pissed because escort was late. Girls needing a place to stay for a night or three. The money was good, but expenses were high for drivers, marketing, dispatchers, etc. Occasionally you would have a thief that would take the money and disappear or say she was robbed by client (which was always a lie). Although I truly liked some of the girls, other ones were just shiat to the core that just knew how to act and dress the part.

Seriously, Clark County (Las Vegas) needs to accept reality and legalize it already.

That seems like it would just make too much sense.  I'm surprised the casinos haven't lobbied hard for this.  It would be a great income stream for them - they already have high end shopping boutiques inside of many of them, so obviously people who suddenly win a bunch of cash are willing to spend it right away, why not add brothels into the mix and find yet another way for the house to get back any winnings they have to pay out?

I do not with to demean you, good sir, but complex economics do not work (well) this way. Specific items or services require much more infrastructure or regulation than other items or services. Personally, I do not want to pay more for the medical bills of poor smokers and fat people, nor do most people. So the goods and services which accompany high health risk activities will be taxed more. This is but one examples.

I do not want to pay for whores or the regulation that accompanies the industry, so you can pay higher taxes on those purchases if you deem the services necessary.

Subby- great headline.
