This is a nastly little bugger. Fatality rate is hovering around 50%. They're not sure how it's being transmitted (what the source is) but have seen H2H transmission.

And before anyone goes 'Pssh Sars wound up being nothing to worry about, why does the CDC always freak people out?"

SARS wound up not being bad, in part, *BECAUSE* the CDC came down on it like a bag of farking hammers, quarantined it, and treated it really friggen seriously. And the CDC weren't the ones going "YOU'RE ALL GONNA DIE!". They were being factual, stating potential outcomes, and telling folks how to protect themselves. It's not their fault the media likes acting like the apocalypse is upon us.

Hopefully it'll get scary enough for everyone to freak out and stay home, providing another excellent vacation time abroad.

I was in Hong Kong during sars, stayed in a suite at a 5 star on kaloon? Peninsula.

Everything was really cheap and only got worried when I went to Macau and ppl started yelling at me in the customs line and someone ran toward me with something, turned out to be a temperature thingy they touched to my head.

My baseball cap I guess made my head come up warm on the infrared camera.

Time to wait and see where this goes. If they handle it the same way they did last time it should turn out ok.

This guy knows what he's talking about. CDC does what is necessary but its the media and all those guys with fully stocked bunkers who wring their hands and lament "OH GOD IT'S TIME, THIS IS IT.

I was at that show. That was the biggest crowd I've ever been in.

It's funny that the Rolling Stones are back on tour this summer, maybe they'll play SARSstock 2 viral boogaloo.

What, there's something worse than hay-fever allergies? Stuffy sinuses, headache that won't quit... this sucks.

The first French case wasn't confirmed to be the coronavirus virus until after he had infected his roommate. He's been since quarantined with something like 100 people under close watch for symptoms. Of those 100 people - there were five suspected cases. Three negatives. 1 positive and 1 pending.

I'm not too worried. I may not have a fully stocked bunker, but I do have access to guns, legally obtained explosives and know the location of a few guys who have said bunkers that are fully stocked and a blown up door away.

The CDC and WHO won that round but that doesn't mean they'll win them all.

Which is why being a prepper is stupid--there will always be those with guns but no supplies.

To be totally fair, a certain amount of survivalism makes sense, in the "Sometimes the lights go out, and the stores always run out of toilet paper every time a mild storm shows up" sense, and when I get to a point where I have space, more money, and no renter's agreement to prevent me from that level of indulgence, I will so indulge.

Beyond that, this.

/The only survivalist prepper thing that will ACTUALLY help is the biological option.  Namely: "1) *Ebola/SARS/Junior's RNA kit got out*  2) Find/Steal a big boat  3) Stock with food  4) Wait it out at sea, pray that no one in your party got infected during Steps 1-3  5) Scavenge from the ruins".
//Sitting in a single known, well-stocked, well-fortified spot is just asking for it.

...Wait, is that really a better life?

Yeah, I don't consider being prepared for storms to be prepper behavior.  Society hasn't collapsed, it's just going to take a bit to put everything back in order.

Been reading Under a Graveyard Sky??

Loren: Been reading Under a Graveyard Sky??

Why, yes.  It's not bad (Ringo is in the same bucket as Mark Steyn, where I disagree with his politics, but love reading his stuff), really needs an ending, is yet another hanging Ringo series along with Special Circumstances and the Hedren War (though given that the sequel fro Graveyard Sky has a name, it shouldn't be hanging for long), and I enjoyed it.

And then I read The Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse and had nightmares for a week.

/And of course, here in the Bay Area, we're pretty much free of everything except for the "We're all doomed earthquake" at which point I'm trapped without gas on the other side of the Bay Area from the Central Valley and no way to get out over broken freeways and collapsed bridges.
//Man, I miss Michigan where all you had to worry about was the occasional thunderstorm knocking out power for a couple hours.
///Also, where did the quote"The United States started to go downhill when it changed from a round designed to kill the enemies of our glorious republic to one designed to piss them off" come from?

If it's medically possible for you i'd recommend getting a cortisone shot. When my hayfever gets ridiculously horrible, i go get one. By the next day it's as if you don't even have hayfever anymore.

Likewise.  He's a good storyteller if he can keep from swamping it with politics.  (I'm thinking of that abomination "The Last Centurion".  I don't care about the Hedren war, I would like to see more of Special Circumstances (minus all the DragonCon stuff!), though.  Given the end of Queen of Swords he obviously has something in mind at least.

And then I read The Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse and had nightmares for a week.

I haven't finished Graveyard Sky yet but given the biology I've seen so far I'm not too worried about his doomsday predictions.  They're figuring it some lone crazy--at the level of biotech we are seeing no lone crazy did it.  The problem is no lone crazy could possibly test it, nor could they reasonably expect to get it right on the first try without testing it.

By the time a lone crazy could get it right on the first try the CDC could also take a sample of the virus and quickly turn out a vaccine and a synthetic antibody.
