I know, why would someone who was 69 years old die?  It's unheard of.

They were also a football team, in the World Football League which only lasted from 1974-1975, and before that the Charlotte Hornets were a minor league baseball team.
 The basketball team didn't exist in 1988

/ didn't realize the Hornets Basketball team is now the New Orleans Pelicans
//Pelicans?  WTF?

This.  Knew exactly what subby meant when I read it.  It's funny how many teams have shared names back & forth throughout the history of American sports.

I had no idea there was an NBA team called the New Orleans Pelicans. Learned something new today.

They've been the New Orleans Hornets for that past decade... they are making the name change this offseason.

/of course this being fark, most Farkers probably are surprised their is this thing called the NBA also playing during the NHL season

Well, that's why I never heard of them. I learned two new things today. I only watch the NFL, NCAA basketball and golf. I don't keep up with the NBA. Just could never get into professional basketball for some reason.

after doing a little reading, it seems the Hornets tried to get the Jazz name from the SLC team, but they wouldn't give it up citing "a rich 25 year history including two Finals", so they opted for Pelicans after the Louisiana state bird.

The Hornets name may actually revert to Charlotte in 2014 if MJ so chooses to take it.

Yeah, honestly, should have been Jazz back to N.O., Hornets back to Charlotte, and Utah figure out what you are going to name yourselves (Peaks, Mountains, Stormin Mormons...)

I know I'm in the minority here, but I really like the Pelicans name. I just appreciate the originality, and why is it any worse than naming your team the Cardinals or the Blue Jays or the Knicks?

This article helped too.

Soon it was commonplace for entire teams to change cities in search of greater profits. The Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles where there are no lakes. The Oilers moved to Tennessee where there is no oil. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City where they don't allow music.

Because Pelicans are kind of badass and more relevant to New Orleans.

I think Pelicans are cool, just never considered it as a name for a sports team though; at least not for basketball, although its also not a sport I watch much of.
  Also hadn't heard about the name change before today so that threw me off a bit too.
