Ha! I was ready with a Meshuggah link, thinking this link would be lame. Don't know that I'd call him the best in the world, but he's a damn fine musician.

He's good but he's no Dave Lombardo

There are so many incredible metal drummers in the world I can't even begin to pick a favorite.  I liked this song but I don't think it really shows off his skills.

if it's anybody but Neil Peart, i'd have to question your sanity

Not bad for a guy with 2 arms.

For straight out metal, I'd take Charlie Benante.
Overall though, nobody beats Peart.
Nobody.

Peart is among the worst "good" drummer ever. He's certainly not the only one, but he's usually what people who have never actually heard a good drummer perform say is the "best".

The Metalica guy is 42x better than Peart on his best day.

The Nirvana guy is 117x better.

The guy who drums for the Nirvana guy is 243x better.

I saw them open for Tool on their Aenima tour.  I found them to be pretty uninteresting, the singing was terrible, and the drumming (including in this video) doesn't even register in comparison to Danny Carey.Sadly Tomahawk was their opener on the tour until a couple shows before the one I saw, that was a lot better by all accounts from friends around the states that caught that leg of the tour.

Thats not Mike Portnoy.

Interesting but it didn't leave me ah struck.

Less is more when it comes to drumming. IMHO

was willing to see and hear his skills until that other guy started "singing".

had to turn it off, just don't get it.

I don't disagree with Funbags, except in that his opinion of Peart is pretty wrong.

After witnessing poly-rhythms like this  kind of shiat in every god damned song they do it narrows the scope of what I call excellent drumming. Some may argue it's prog, but they're still metal in books.

Two more guys missing from this thread:

Chris Adler (Lamb of God), a left-hander who plays drums right handed.

This, a thousand times this.  I can't begin to imagine the math that goes on in Danny Carey's brain.

I can't even say nice try, because that was an awful attempt at trolling.

Best metal drummer in the world? It's difficult to compare. Any list wouldn't be complete without:

Chris Adler
Danny Carey
Tomas Haake
Dave Lombardo
Joey Jordison
Mike Portnoy
Dirk Verbeuren

Depending on the size of the list, or allowing for drummers outside of the metal genre, you have to include:

Tim Alexander
Travis Barker
Mike Bordin
Jimmy Chamberlain
Raymond Herrera
Jay Lane
Shannon Larkin
Bryan Mantia
Neil Peart
Scott Rockenfield
Mike Wengren

How the hell did THREE drummers for Primus make it on my list? Because they're all good. No, not good. All three are best of the best.

Anyway, pretty much every list I've ever seen says it's Dave Lombardo.

/no Lars, not yours

2013-05-12 01:06:08 AM
He didn't fall off the drum throne
He didn't puke on his floor monitor
He didn't twirl his sticks
He knew where "1" was.

Yep, that's pretty good for drummer.

Now if he can sort things out with his ex-girlfriend he won't be homeless anymore.

2013-05-12 01:08:16 AM
I say Bill Ward.
Ward's funky interplay with Geezer is so greasy and organic sounding.

I am sick and tired of all the "best" metal drummers being so tight and clinical. These guys are who always get the credit. They lock tight with the bass and there is just no rubber.

Bill Ward blows all those dudes away. He can be loose but so in the pocket.

Listen to "Wall of Sleep" ...period.

Cute. But this is drumming.

Kinda came herer to say this, although I don't really think Rush qualifies as "metal".

A lot of good drummer have already been mentioned, so I'll throw a fav into the mix, Mikkey Dee. He was with King Diamond in the late 80's and has been with Motorhead since '92.

Here's a solo of his.

No love for Hellhammer?  He's by far the best black metal drummer, and I would certainly rank him pretty high up on the list.  Maybe it's because he's not a regular in a group, or because all of the Mayhem shenanigans overshadowed him.

Really, really bad.

I thought I was going to see drumming, but it was just some guy sitting behind the retarded guitar center demo kit with 30 cymbals.

Came across this solo last night which was pretty creative and badass. Takes a couple minutes before mind-blowing commences, pretty good for a 50 year old.

Hell of a nice guy too.  He came into a club we were playing in Chicago and sat in (jazz combo) pretty randomly when Motorhead was in Chicago two years ago.  Called the singer the next day and invited us all backstage to hang while he held court.  Great player with some great road stories.

Of course it's subjective, but in my universe, no comes CLOSE to touching Carey for sheer creativity, brutality and dynamics.
