I went to a train show last year to reminisce about when I used to collect them.  Holy crap the hobby has become expensive.  The hobby is not for kids anymore, kinda sad.

I live a two blocks from the train tracks, so every day is train day for me.
I'm just thankful it's a single track line, keeps the traffic down to 3-4 a day.

/No, I don't complain about the noise
//Because I'm the one that rented a house near the tracks

The BBC recently commissioned a series looking behind the scenes on the british railways. It taught me two things: 1) Britain's railways are the equivalent of a thousand people spinning a million plates and if one goes, the whole thing goes. 2) commuters are know it all arseholes who will loudly complain if their train is late because of a suicide on the line (this happened). It also gave me one of the most unintentionally hilarious exchanges I've heard:

passenger - "can you tell me what platform my train is?"
guard - "i don't know how to tell you this..."
passenger - "?"
guard - "your ticket is booked for half six in the morning. It's six o'clock in the evening. You're twelve hours late"
passenger - "..."

I have discovered the same thing, the good news is they paint locomotives for smaller railroads these days, the bad news is they are now expensive hyper accurate scale models.

Let's combine them and have National Nickelback Hit By a Train Day.

I wish I had the time and money to create something like that. Oh well back to restoring vintage Philco radios.

My wife's grandfather passed away not too long ago and his house had a huge model train set in the basement that was impossible to remove without destroying it. Her family put the house up for sale and it ended up going for 20k over asking price because people really wanted the huge train set in the basement. I don't get the interest in the hobby but to each their own.

I think model trains are a great tool to teach kids patience and develop creativity, both of which seem to be lacking these days.

It is also a good way to teach children that cats are evil and would destroy the world if they were big enough

I run quite a bit along rail-to-trail paths in the Pittsburgh area. They run along both NS and CSX lines. As a rail fan, I always wave at the engineers. They always wave back and typically honk. Still watching for a heritage NS loco - I've only seen the Veteran's loco. And I still get excited to see an SD-40-2 in a lash up. If its the lead, you can tell from the horn and the engine noise without seeing it.

/makes the long runs a little more bearable
//will always be fascinated by trains
