It gets interesting when you go down to the state level. In Wisconsin, the worst area was just north of Green Bay, not Waukesha County as I would have assumed. My small home town showed up as one of the bigger blips. The only thing that surprises me about that is that I didn't know people there knew what twitter was, let alone how to use it.

The interactive map: Link

Good find.

If you zero in on Texas in the original map, link, you see that the center of racism in Texas is the Waco-Temple-Killeen area.

That does not surprise me one bit.

But I think the flaw in the data here is that the gaps show the lack of use of Twitter, versus lack of racist or homophobic attitudes, like rural areas of Texas.

But it was a good use of Twitter data.

Los Angeles looking pretty tolerant.

Finally there is something that may convince my fellow northerners that we are indeed pretty damn racist.

I noticed a lot of overlap between "most hateful" areas and "crappiest places to live."

2013-05-10 09:31:12 PM
My town doesn't light up for any category.

I'd like to think that's because of our advanced enlightenment. But I suspect it's because there aren't actually many people tweeting here.

2013-05-10 09:35:45 PM
Lots of islands of red in seas of blue.

Were they reading tweets written in Spanish?

The only reason Northern Maine is just a tinge of blue is because (a) we don't have a lot of people up here and (b) we only just recently discovered electricity.

Population map? Then explain the surprising lightly colored Denver.

\Not many racists here
\\You know that's right.

also known as "population map"

if that was true california would be lit up the most

While we are far from perfect, it was heartening to see my area of SC relatively in the clear. I was surprised to see a lot of it seemed to center around DC, but I guess that goes for sheer population size. The west looks pretty laid back though.

2013-05-10 10:34:08 PM
I'm surprised a new color wasn't invented just for Georgia.  Probably would require 3D glasses to represent it properly.

2013-05-10 10:34:11 PM
Yeah, there are definitely some areas where population and hateful tweets don't mesh. Lexington, KY, for instance, doesn't really light up, but somebody in Paris, KY REALLY has a gay issue. He or She should really get that checked out... What's interesting is zooming in a bit to county-level data and then clicking on specific slurs. Some areas might really favor one or the other. Cool find.

Hell, Bend getting more hits than Corvallis surprised me.  Luckily there's not enough tweeting where I'm from to count.
/Just take 97 south 50 miles from Bend.

Surprised that NY and California did not show up more with so many people whining:
"The GOP is trying to cripple the economy".

2013-05-10 10:45:07 PM
Is this corrected for population density? Montana's been a center for white nationalists seeking a white homeland, but the density if so small and spread out it won't show up as much as more numerous, but probably more casual, bigots in population centers

2013-05-10 10:59:10 PM
It's not a population map because they weighted each location by the number of tweets. So one tweet in a sea of tweets shows up very little. Instead, it's a map of rural- and small town-counties that happen to have one or two particularly prolific Twittering homophobes, which is not of any real use to anyone.

Add in that the conservatives in Oregon are some of the most conservative conservatives in the country.  Once you get away from the I-5 corridor, the PNW get's pretty red.

I remember the good old days when their mascot was the American Indian. They even provided free tuition for those who would perform at football games.

Which is kinda strange, since, at least in the area I grew up, it's not very religious.  My guess is the guns.

Campanula: Yeah, there are definitely some areas where population and hateful tweets don't mesh. Lexington, KY, for instance, doesn't really light up...

Having done a lot of online interaction with the good ol' folk of central Kentucky over the last several months over topics such as gay marriage, I agree that this map doesn't mesh up well (unless nobody in Lexington is tweeting.) The amount of hate that comes from some of these people is mind blowing. And all in the name of Christianity.

2013-05-10 11:16:36 PM
So Traverse City and Grayling are the hotspots of racism in Michigan? I doubt there is even 20,000 people between those two towns. So yeah probably a couple of people tweeting a lot...

2013-05-10 11:17:19 PM
Southern Idaho/Northern Utah. Where none of the people who are slurred with such names live. This means something

How about weighting each tweet by the population of the town or state? I mean, NY city alone is half the size of the entire Midwest. Forty tweets in NY city is not the same as forty tweets in the Quad Cities.

Anyway, I agree, it's a good start...

Ah, my mistake. That one blob in The Dalles is only for homophobic slurs. Still weird, though.

Not that weird.  The Dalles is super conservative.  Hell, I personally know some people who could easily be responsible for those tweets...

Sorry, is people getting on Twiiter to rag on a bunch of "cripples" really a problem?  In 2013?

Really?

2013-05-11 12:47:52 AM
Looking at this map, I'm more than a little suspicious that what we're actually seeing is "Internet routing points that the homophobe tweets got tagged at." Or something.

I'm sorry, but if this number of tweets, NOT normalized by population density, there is no way that the more than twenty million people in the greater Los Angeles and New York areas can barely even register, while The Dalles can apparently be seen from space.

More people live on every block of Manhattan than in The Dalles. City people are more tolerant, but they aren't that good yet.

2013-05-11 12:48:36 AM
Problem with this is that it doesn't differentiate between people who are actually racists, and people who have progressed beyond the paranoia of political correctness, and are fine making jokes using certain words because it's no longer a big deal to them. I know black people who love sharing horribly racist black jokes for fun, and mixed race friends who are comfortable enough with each other that they can rank on each others ethnicity as a joke and it's no big deal.

This also leaves out the ever popular "says the worst most vile things possible because they're attention whores" demographic.  John Gabriel's Greater Internet F***wad Theory and all.

I felt the disabled tag was under-represented.  They didn't include gimp, retard, mouth-breather, shuffler, wheelfoot, Corky, Downstown, Eileen or Special Needs.  Kids these days don't even know about the insults they think they are researching.

Cripple.  That's the only insult they could come up with?

Apparently Martha's Vineyard, and it's 17,000 residents is the seething hotbed of racism in Massachusetts, which seems a bit odd.

Tellingthem: So Traverse City and Grayling are the hotspots of racism in Michigan? I doubt there is even 20,000 people between those two towns. So yeah probably a couple of people tweeting a lot...

Well, we also have to consider that in a lot of those grey areas (the thumb, the U.P., and lots of blank space upstate) there probably aren't a lot of Twitter users or social media fans. I think in the U.P. they think a "twitter" is a type of fishing lure.
