There are parts of the northern part of the state that have picked up a lot of the culture as people migrated, but that's about it.

I vote for Bakersfield CA for the most Redneck city in CA.

But what the hell do I know I have just visited the place.

\Maybe we should decide what the definition of Redneck is or is not.
\Noticed more Confederate flags in WV than any other state in the US
\Do WV not know their history?

Fatties. Still ok to make fun of fatties to

Cerebral Knievel: she also gave me her recipe for corn bread and greens, and black eyed peas... I miss Nanna....

I miss your Nanna, too.  I'm an unreconstructed Yankee, but anyone who doesn't like good solid southern soul
food (esepcially greens with hot sauce) just ain't RIGHT.

And I defer to her recollection about the etymology of the term 'Redneck'.

Look, by the coastline, you have the entire retired force of New York and New Jersey combined. It's the western parts, and central Florida that remain untouched by human progress. Head out toward Lake Okeechobee sometime... stay a spell... as they say there. You'll see that the redneck population is just flourishing in all it's dog-fighting, mudder tire, stars and bars flying, tobacco chewing, welder cap wearing glory.

2013-05-10 05:27:43 PM
I remember getting called a redneck by northerners while I was in Knoxville, while on the college campus.

I thought it was hilarious honestly.

2013-05-10 05:28:30 PM

R.A.Danny: Shawnee OK also oddly missing.

By including both OKC and Tulsa, they're kind of admitting the whole state.  Besides, Shawnee's just a big town.

Ok I decided to actually read TFA and not just look at the list. This explains a lot:

"Being from Austin [Texas] "

2013-05-10 05:28:40 PM
My list of top redneck towns would include:

Hazard, KY
Cairo, GA
Knoxville, TN
Hickory, NC
Nitro, WV
Tickfaw, LA
Paducah, KY
Starkville, AL

2013-05-10 05:29:37 PM
Yep

Yeah? What's that explain to you? I would imagine the author may claim to be from Austin, but I'd bet you money the SOB was really born and raised in California.

I had those, because I used to weld on occasion. I never knew they were a "thing" until I GISed them in response to your post.

Wow.

Austin in MANY ways is to Texas as Miami is to the South.

Which is really an odd thing considering.

They are on their way to trying. First shot over the bow was the noise ordinance they put in downtown - once the high rise condos were built.

There's a joke here - how many Austinites does it take to screw in a light bulb?
26. One to do it, and 25 others biatching about how much better it was 25 years ago.

Agreed, study is seriously flawed. Not sure what other criteria should be used though.

We aren't done farking up Portland yet. We have barely sent the scouts into Austin.

2013-05-10 05:43:43 PM
I call B.S. on this.

#1. Atlanta.  Really?  Did anyone review the redneck to African-American ratio?  You have to get well beyond  the Perimeter even to find the slightest hint of redneck.

#6 & #7.  Where does Fort Worth end and Arlington begin?  Sure, more redneck than Atlanta, but downright  cosmopolitan compared to the city that should be #1.

#9. Cleveland.  See #1.

#10. This one I can believe.

What city should be #1?  Palm Bay, Florida.  Note I didn't type Palm Beach, rather Palm Bay.  I had the  misfortune of living there for six years.  I have also lived in Atlanta and Fort Worth.  Those cities aren'teven in the same league.  Why?  I'll tell you why?

1. It's full of underemployed, alcoholic white trash.
2. It's largely made up of Jim Walter homes sitting on septic tanks and wells.
3. Despite a toddler get torn to shreds by a pit bull every other week, the whole town got riled up when the city council suggested owners should keep their dogs under control and on a leash.
4. Search for my "rape baby" story here on fark.com.
5. Palm Bay is to Florida as Florida is the United States.
6. It's the only place in the world where I've been threatened and assaulted.  Once was at work.  I reported the guy and was told my security "if we didn't see it, it didn't happen".
7. The big thing to do was go to the drag races.
8. I got so tired of being cornered and told, "You think yer better than me because yer a college boy!", I stopped wearing anything with my college name on it and removed my bumper sticker.
9. I had a neighbor who would let his huge dogs crap up his front yard and he and his brother would wrestle in it.
10. The city was full of fat, ugly, greasy-haired trashy single moms with about eight trashlings in tow and made no attempt to control their brood.
11. When the state passed their anti-smoking laws back in the 90s (which then only mandated the invisible line down the middle for smoking and non) several restaurants refused to do it claiming it was unconstitutional.  At one place, The Wagon Wheel, the waitress served our food with a lit cig in her mouth and I could see back into the kitchen and the cooks were smoking.
12. People almost go out of their way to be as inconsiderate to others as humanly possible.

teenage mutant ninja rapist: Uranus Megahertz: xxmedium: Shenanigans.

No Beckley, WV anywhere in the top 10. I'm officially calling "Shenanigans".

I think Beckley would be more 'hillbilly'.

Hillbilly? Redneck? I didnt know there was a difference

Hillbillies live in the backwoods, hills, mountains, and often lack access to education, culture or other refinements of modern society.

Rednecks live everywhere, and have access to and often genuine knowledge of them, but pointedly mock education, culture and refinement.

Atlanta doesn't belong on that list.  I live in Augusta for a year, and Atlanta was the ONLY place I've been in Georgia that WASN'T backwards.

I've never been to KC, so can't comment on that.
OKC is definitely a backward shiathole, as are Nashville, Tulsa, Ft Worh, Arlington, Sacramento (eh, not so much, but leave it on the list).
Haven't been to Cleveland or Mesa, but I imagine Mesa is full of Tea Baggers, so yeah.

2013-05-10 06:13:17 PM

titwrench: Tarkus: Sacramento? Really?!

No shiat. Stockton maybe, but Sacramento?

Agreed.  I take back my statement about leaving Sacto on the list.  I was thinking about all the rednecky places AROUND Sacto, like Roseville, Stockton, Folsom, Lodi.

2013-05-10 06:15:09 PM
What about Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Home of the biggest rodeo in the US.  The Grandaddy of them all.  Frontier Days.  Sheesh.

DjangoStonereaver: downstairs: Nabb1: Atlanta is #1?  Atlanta isn't even in the top ten of the most redneck cities in Georgia.

Exactly.  Atlanta is the most northern city in the South.  Anecdotal evidence here from a weekend visit, but the whole city seemed like a fancy strip mall, like the ones I grew up near in the Chicago 'burbs.

Atlanta does not belong to the list.  It is so relentlessly full of manufactured- or self-conscious 'quirkiness' that you have
to believe its a disproportionate reaction to being surrounded on all sides by the reddest of rednecky jurisdictions.

When heading south out of the city (on I85, I think; its been a while), when you cross the Fulton/Cobb county line, you
can almost hear the physical 'CLICK' of the Redneck rectifier snapping on and your IQ drop 15 points.

What happens when you go into Dekalb county?

You ain't kidding brother.

About 20 years ago a buddy and I were on a Florida roadtrip, just visiting people we knew. We were in Boca Raton and were headed to Tampa. So I plotted a direct course straight through the heart of the state. I saw things I had not seen my redneck East TN cousins do out there.

2013-05-10 06:34:18 PM

The Southern Dandy: backward shiathole, as are Nashville, Tulsa, Ft Worh, Arlington, Sacramento

Nashville, Ft Worth, Arlington, and Sac aren't backwards shiat holes. They have plenty of rednecks (not so much in Sacramento) but take it easy.

/used to live in Arlington, it's more suburban hell than super redneck, plenty of cities more redneck then them in DFW.

that's just a list of 10 cities people have heard of.  the author would NEVER go to the real 'most redneck' towns in America.

2013-05-10 06:52:56 PM

atomicmask: something tells me the author wont do that.. Why are racist labels alright when used against whites but not against other races?

I've never met a redneck that was offended by that term, what are you whining about? White trash is the racist term dude, get it together.

(Checks map)

OK, so I got it wrong.  So help me I thought Cobb County was south of Fulton.

This would either be Coweta or Fayette, then.

Lucky LaRue: maddman: xxmedium: Shenanigans.

I have to agree with you there

Princeton makes Beckley look like a center for the arts.

Well, Beckley DOES have Tamarack......

I have to agree with someone earlier though, WV is more "hillbilly" than "redneck" and I'm actually rather glad of that. Hillbilly is something that is ingrained in you, redneck is an affectation.
