Some dumb internet mother farker has never been to Alabama.

clovercat: I know these are towns but for completeness I added these.

Top 11 In correct order:
1. Arab, Al
2, Gurley, Al
3. Cullman, Al
4. Enterprise, Al
5. Albertville, Al
6. Boaz, Al
7. Fyffe, Al
8. Jasper, Al
9. Daleville, Al
10. Montgomery, Al
11.  Any other city in Alabama

Mesa, AZ is as sophisticated as Vienna, Austria in comparison to any of them. In fact, many people from Alabama travel abroad to Mesa to get exposed to culture.

Thank you. I was going to say just get a dart and an Alabama map and you'll beat this list every time.

/grew up in Alabama

99.998er: Another Government Employee: bulldg4life: This list is silly. Atlanta isn't redneck.

Now, if you go 45 minutes in any direction, then it is redneck. But, inside the city limits it isn't.

It depends on your Area Code.  Anything inside 404, no.  Outside, yes.

1/3 correct. 770 & 678 also apply.

How do I know you have never spent time in Henry or Douglas Counties?

Good point.

hej: I would argue it's more the Kansas side of Kansas City that's redneck.

only if you confuse ghettos with trailer parks.

Mesa? Lived there 13 years but never thought of it as redneck and I've lived Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and some other western states. So I think I know what redneck looks like.

Mesa used to feel quite Midwestern although mostly Mormon. Now it's populated mostly by asshole SOCAL refugees driving up the housing prices.

2013-05-10 08:50:15 PM
Ok, having lived in the valley for +30 years, let me just say....Mesa is in no way, shape, or form redneck. Yeah, there are some trailer parks around, but those are mostly in Apache Junction, which is about 100X more redneck than Mesa. Mesa is a bunch of mormons and mexicans

Redneck cities that don't include Cincinnati Ohio, Indianapolis, Indiana and not a single city in Kentucky? Lame list. Very lame.

West "by God" Virginia is a redneck state.

I think you'll find that Montgomery isn't quite as "redneck" as you apparently believe, since it's majority black and at least half of it looks like a post-apocalyptic abandoned city.

Theeng: I remember getting called a redneck by northerners while I was in Knoxville, while on the college campus.

I thought it was hilarious honestly.

I remember being called a Yankee by folks living in Iuka (eye-ukah) Mississippi, and Charlotte South Carolina, And I'm from Richmond Virginia.

some of the folks in SC seemed like they wanted to blame me for Richmond surrendering. and I have had folks in PA try to blame me for things that occurred in Mobile Alabama.

I actually got ran out of South Carolina..

Pretty much yeah. If you want redneck, head to south ga. Or anywhere outside of Atlanta.

I live in Loganville...about 30 miles from downtown Atlanta.  Half of my neighbors are black....I know for sure they are not rednecks.

Its close to an hour now, Atlanta is no where close to redneck, upper half is hipster and the south side is carry your gat or risk it......

Stupid list

indeebud: sigdiamond2000: "The 10 Most Redneck Cities in America" according to a person who doesn't know what a redneck is.

In all honesty, most people who use the term "Redneck" don't know what it means. lol

It's a Scottish term brought over from Scotland and blended into the Scot-Irish culture here on the East Coast.  It has something to do with a political/religious group that wore red scarves around their necks to signify which side they were on.  Only now in modern culture have we redefined it to be slang for poor, uneducated and/or trashy.

There is a difference between white trash and redneck. Rednecks are simply rural and can be intelligent in their own way. They usually lack urban sophistication and really could care less.  White trash can be found anywhere. Hillbillies are a different group altogether.

The slideshow is complete silliness.  By definition a city cannot be redneck.  A city is too densely populated and full of modernity.

Tenga: No Knoxville Tennessee? Come for the strip malls, stay for the ingrained, blatant racism.

Your profile says you're from Cleveland, TN.  The same Cleveland that is known for no reason other than the Ocoee River.  You know, the one from Deliverance.

So no, no Knoxville.   There are at least a few in line ahead of them.

America's elite, educated and mainstream media are so farking dumb it beggars belief.

A 'redneck' is a Scot who rebelled against unwarranted government in their lives through the auspices of religion. The red scarves they wore around their necks signified they were Covenanters. They rebelled against the rule of Bishops.

Naturally, this insistence of freedom of religion and freedom of conscience was flipped to mean dumb hick farmers.

And you're perpetuating it.

Rather than applauding rebellion against religion.

Jeep2011: I vote for Bakersfield CA for the most Redneck city in CA.

But what the hell do I know I have just visited the place.

\Maybe we should decide what the definition of Redneck is or is not.
\Noticed more Confederate flags in WV than any other state in the US
\Do WV not know their history?

Bakersfield is over 60% hispanic. We have Nacos.

The Southern Dandy: Atlanta doesn't belong on that list.  I live in Augusta for a year, and Atlanta was the ONLY place I've been in Georgia that WASN'T backwards.

I've never been to KC, so can't comment on that.
OKC is definitely a backward shiathole, as are Nashville, Tulsa, Ft Worh, Arlington, Sacramento (eh, not so much, but leave it on the list).

The Flaming Lips are from OKC and proud of it.  Tulsa's got the second most attended nightclub in the US and 11th in the world (Cain's Ballroom).  Live music is  huge in Oklahoma.  Both are, far and away, more redskin than redneck (heck, the state's name translates to English  literally as "red people").  Though the article seems to confuse Route 66 (of which there are up to 4 different routes through Tulsa, all of them save for the newest make local stops every block, and the newest is a regularly congested freeway) with the Creek Turnpike (which, for a few bucks, will take you from the Governor Joseph Turner Turnpike in Sapulpa, bypasses all the 66s entirely, running you through Jenks, well-off South Tulsa neighborhoods and Broken Arrow before dumping you on the William C Rogers Turnpike in Catoosa, nonstop.  Though it's a rare turnpike that has no services whatsoever, and thanks to removal of picnic areas and the Vinita concessions plaza closed on the Rogers Turnpike, if you're just passing through and don't want to leave the highway for anything, you better have trained for it: You'll go from the Bristow concessions plazas to nearly Joplin, Missouri without on-highway access to gas, bathrooms, food or a legal opportunity to stop that doesn't involve throwing money at a tollbooth.

Atlanta, yeah, a little weird that made the list. Sacramento, though?  I'm willing to extend that all the way to Berkeley and the San Fransisco waterfront, making a gradient fading out the farther west you go.  Surprisingly rural midwestern vibe in that part of the state despite the sprawling metropoli everywhere.

Surprised Midland, Texas didn't make the list for the Baby Jessica thing alone: The epilogue of that is everyone involved either went to prison (including the police officer, for diddling children), died (including the EMT who pulled her from the hole, Cobained himself in the middle of a Farm to Market Highway), or lost a foot (Jessica herself and presumably half of everyone else in that diabetic-looking crowd).

A Fark in the Dark: What about Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Home of the biggest rodeo in the US.  The Grandaddy of them all.  Frontier Days.  Sheesh.

Hell, Union Pacific Railroad's only passenger service also happens to be the world's longest passenger train.  It runs from Denver to Cheyenne arriving in time for the start of Frontier Days and departs for Denver after the conclusion.  They actually have to cut it and fill damn near all the platforms at Denver.

DjangoStonereaver: Pharmdawg: DjangoStonereaver: downstairs: Nabb1: Atlanta is #1?  Atlanta isn't even in the top ten of the most redneck cities in Georgia.

Exactly.  Atlanta is the most northern city in the South.  Anecdotal evidence here from a weekend visit, but the whole city seemed like a fancy strip mall, like the ones I grew up near in the Chicago 'burbs.

Atlanta does not belong to the list.  It is so relentlessly full of manufactured- or self-conscious 'quirkiness' that you have
to believe its a disproportionate reaction to being surrounded on all sides by the reddest of rednecky jurisdictions.

When heading south out of the city (on I85, I think; its been a while), when you cross the Fulton/Cobb county line, you
can almost hear the physical 'CLICK' of the Redneck rectifier snapping on and your IQ drop 15 points.

What happens when you go into Dekalb county?

(Checks map)

OK, so I got it wrong.  So help me I thought Cobb County was south of Fulton.

This would either be Coweta or Fayette, then.

I try not to stop in Coweta ever since a hawk dropped a rabbit on my windshield on 51B going through there.  I just take the Muskogee Turnpike through and don't even have to get off the cruise control unless the Pikepass lane is closed (then I get to stop and wait in a queue just so I can stop at the Coweta toll plaza just long enough for 'em to record my plate number at the cash lane...).

Now you know what it's like to live in Portland, Oregon, except replace "days over 70 degrees" with "days of precipitation."  And throw in Detroit-levels of crime.
