Smeggy Smurf: Redneck and ghetto are almost identical except location.

Ghetto= Minority, baggy clothes & low rider

Redneck= White, baggy overalls & pick up trucks.

sigdiamond2000: "The 10 Most Redneck Cities in America" according to a person who doesn't know what a redneck is.

In all honesty, most people who use the term "Redneck" don't know what it means. lol

It's a Scottish term brought over from Scotland and blended into the Scot-Irish culture here on the East Coast.  It has something to do with a political/religious group that wore red scarves around their necks to signify which side they were on.  Only now in modern culture have we redefined it to be slang for poor, uneducated and/or trashy.

xxmedium: Shenanigans.

No Beckley, WV anywhere in the top 10. I'm officially calling "Shenanigans".

Clearly, someone needs to compile a list of "The 10 Most Hillbilly Cities in America." Then West By God Virginia would get some much-needed representation.

/Family in WV
//They would not disagree

bulldg4life: This list is silly. Atlanta isn't redneck.

Now, if you go 45 minutes in any direction, then it is redneck. But, inside the city limits it isn't.

It depends on your Area Code.  Anything inside 404, no.  Outside, yes.

The writer of this list tried at least.

How many "Top 10 American Cities...." lists are there? Umpteen Cockbillion?

I can't wait for tomorrow's list of "Top 10 American cities most likely to have a koala named Wilbur enrolled in a bikram yoga class".

darth_badger: Atlanta? Are black people rednecks now too?

I know?...the only people I have ever seen in atlanta were black, mexican, or gay... NTTAWWT.

Hell if I saw a redneck I woulda at least been able to fit in a little bit.

Another Government Employee: Uncle Pooky: Fort Worth maybe... if we're counting the whole "Cowtown" history. As it stands now? No.

Arlington? Redneck? I spent many years there and have no idea what they could possibly be talking about.

Waco should be on that list.

Uh, aren't they like within 25 miles of each other?

And they didn't include Dallas?

Or San Antonio?

Guess you've never been there.

Or San Antonio, for that matter.

CavalierEternal: OH MY GOD, CLEVELAND HAS A WAL-MART? AND THE ARTICLE INCLUDES A PICTURE OF WHAT A WAL-MART MIGHT LOOK LIKE? JESUS CHRIST, IT MUST BE LIKE AN EPISODE OF "HEE-HAW" UP THERE!

I have to admit, aside from Case Western, NASA, arguably the best symphony in the world, a seriously well kept library system, amazing food, the second largest live theatre district in the US, the Science Center, RaRHOF, 4th St., brilliant architecture and historic homes, an international airport, widely lauded transit system, the Cleveland Clinic and a smattering of global legal, tech and manufacturing concerns, yeah, it's pretty much wall to wall Jethro and Elly Mae, here.  Troll article trolls poorly.

Are we counting Bluenecks as well? If so, how would Anchorage and the outerlying areas rank? I grew up there and it was great! One of my childhood memories involves the underside of our Jeep catching on fire and me and my dad jumped out in the school parking lot, scooped up some snow in a Taco Bell cup, and extinguished the fire with it. Then we kept on driving. And then there was the time my Dad went dipnetting down in the Keni peninsula and brought home about 22 salmon. And then we gutted and scaled them in our driveway. They were great!

For #1-Atlanta (inside 404) ranks WAY up there.
For #2-You have to start with Miami.  Then LA, El Paso and San Diego.

kwame: I am constantly saying Atlanta is the least Southern city in the South. Second is Nashville.

Well over half of the people I encountered while living and working in Atlanta were either displaced Yankees like myself, or just otherwise atypical metropolitan city-dwellers. The rest just weren't "southern" by any stereotypical metric.

/but, like someone else said, drive just a bit outside of the city in any direction...

I was in a public bathroom at a gas station and Larry the Cable Guy (he wasn't wearing sleeve cutoffs)out of nowhere casually asked to suck my dick. I quickly left the scene. He had his damn touring bus parked out side... mega creep.

Kansas City, MO was #2 on the list?

The writer is retarded.

KCMO is a mixmash of urban minorities and a relatively well-to-do gentrified group of liberals, left-leaning Catholics, and homosexuals. Just because everything 30 miles south of I-70 in Missouri is Redneckistan doesn't mean cities will tolerate that crap.

I think Beckley would be more 'hillbilly'.

Hillbilly? Redneck? I didnt know there was a difference

There is. Hillbillies are folks from out in the hills and mountains of Appalachia. A redneck is generally supposed to be a poorer uneducated person from the South although that definition is pretty useless actually since so many people self-identify as redneck who are neither poor nor uneducated. You can be a hillbilly but not a redneck and a redneck but not a hillbilly and I've met a fair number of people from one group do not want to called the other.

If it wasn't for Atlanta, Georgia would be just like Alabama.

Ever get the feeling that most of these jive-assed, jouranism-it-ain't, bullsh*t "articles" are assembled by people who, upon running out of what few ideas they may have had, whip out a template and see if the chip on their shoulder fits?

My guess is that if you made a bet that Jeff Foxworthy doesn't live in any of the 10 most redneck cities, then you'd win. So I turned to my trusty scout, Google, to find out where he does live. Google says Alpharette, Georgia, but have a peek at his house:

http://www.celebrityhousepictures.com/jeff-foxworthy.php

If your house looks like a small Italian mountain village, you might be a redneck. Or just a nouveau riche comedian who makes a good living out gentle Horatian satire of his sisters and his cousins and his aunts.

Well, it does go a long way to proving he is the smartest of the Blue Collar Tour comics, that and not living in one of the 10 most redneck cities in the USA.

Well, insofar as Jane Fonda's favorite ex-hubby, Ted Turner, is a redneck (the billionaire character based on him in The Critic certainly was a member of the Higher Red Neck classes), then I guess you could say such a suburban sprawl of a house could be a sign of genuine redneck roots, at least South of the Mason Dixon line and West of General Sherman's grave.

Did you know that Jane Fonda's birth name was Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda, which means that she is named after a young, sweet, short-lived lady who had the misfortune of being advanced as a replacement for Queen Elizabeth the First? She was executed, along with a number of the would-be King-Makers. Queen Elizabeth was a Tudor and still half medieval in her methods of governance, although she was a really smart cookie.

I have a number of these high-ranked courtiers and plotters in my family tree but like everybody else, they are on Wikipedia, so I won't bother to look up their names for you. One of them was Queen Elizabeth's governess, although she doesn't seem to have been involved in the treasonable business.

Judging from that photo, I'd say that Jeff Foxworthy's residence is not in the 10 most redneck cities, or the 100, or the 1000, or the 10,000 or even the 100,000. His home base seems pretty upper income suburban, and could thus in theory be anywhere in the well-heeled Continental US. It just happens to be near Atlanta.

Born_Again_Bavarian: They also had a list for nerdiest cities............Sacramento and Atlanta made that list as well.

I'm starting to think that they didn't do a lot of research when they came up with these lists.

They are like statistics.  At least 75% are completely made up.

downstairs: Nabb1: Atlanta is #1?  Atlanta isn't even in the top ten of the most redneck cities in Georgia.

Exactly.  Atlanta is the most northern city in the South.  Anecdotal evidence here from a weekend visit, but the whole city seemed like a fancy strip mall, like the ones I grew up near in the Chicago 'burbs.

Atlanta does not belong to the list.  It is so relentlessly full of manufactured- or self-conscious 'quirkiness' that you have
to believe its a disproportionate reaction to being surrounded on all sides by the reddest of rednecky jurisdictions.

When heading south out of the city (on I85, I think; its been a while), when you cross the Fulton/Cobb county line, you
can almost hear the physical 'CLICK' of the Redneck rectifier snapping on and your IQ drop 15 points.

2013-05-10 03:58:21 PM

Another Government Employee: Or San Antonio?

You ever been to the Ciudad de St. Anthony? We're North Monterrey. There's an incredibly strong Mexican (and Texian) influence here, with a side of German, but not redneck.

Right,
If they would have picked Dalton, Macon, Augusta, or Newnan it would have been more likely.  And nothing from South Carolina or Alabama.  The maker of the list lives in the west.

The author, according to Google, is from Austin.  So she's a Texan hipster.  Also:

Walker: Tarkus: Sacramento? Really?!

These lists are put out as troll lists. So people will talk about them and they will end up on the news. See the recent one saying the most exciting city in America is.....Oakland. Well exciting if you mean the excitement while you dodge bullets.

This.  Mesa, Sacramento and Cleveland are literally troll attempts. And anyone who knows anything about Atlanta knows how utterly fullerschytte this girl is.

I worked in Buckhead, so I didn't see much "quirky"; unless thousands of preppy douchebags zipping around in a leased M3 is considered quirky in of itself to some.

To be fair, how hard is it to make fun of rednecks? They offer nothing of value to culture and social progression, and by and large are the most bigoted people in the world. So yeah, they can suck it.

Yeah... the word redneck as used in those circumstances are entirely independent of one another, it's not like someone heard the only real Scotsman in the world use it and misunderstand the context and repeated it incorrectly. I mean, that does happen, the word "Gay" used to mean "Homosexual male" but now it's all about rainbows and happiness and participation medals and shiat. All those gay folk from 50's Hollywood must be cringing at the word usage, I doubt the Scots care. Not just because they're dead. Lets face it, Scotland is a myth anyway.

A rednech was a farmer. Bending over a plow all day gave them a very tanned neck. At night in a bar the farmers were easily spotted by city-folk as they bent over the bar. That gave us the name redneck bar.
