So he's a sociopath and a scumbag?  Who would have guessed that?

I got a citiation for disturbing the peace once (chased a buddy out of a bar with a squirt gun, cops were sitting at the light, oops), and 10 years later it was the first thing the adoption agency asked me about.

Man there is something about school bus drivers.  A while ago in Columbus there was one who was caught shooting coke... MAINLINING COCAINE... in a bus.  Of course, that guy was contractor so, you know, nobody's fault.  School districts can't be bothered to check up on who drives our kids around right?  Funny thing, he was probably driving better than the 300lb lady who nearly cause a pileup on Woolbright the day... stopping in the middle of a 4 way intersection to let kids out... and then nonchalant driving across 3 lanes of traffic to make a u turn with no signals.  I'm sure that lady deserves her well paying tax dollar funded job.  Idiots.

The police aren't the ones ho run the background checks.  There are independent agencies for that.  And there are different levels of checks.  In this case, clearly they should have used a better company, and done a stricter check.

//Been through 2 background checks in the past year.
//Everything came back clear both times.
//They even tried variable spellings of my name and ran those too.

The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a school bus driver is a good guy with a school bus driver.

Not because of the background checks.  They are the ones who ignored calls from neighbors saying they saw naked women on leashes in his backyard and didn't follow up on the various calls regarding female screams from the house.  Of course, that is assuming people actually did make those calls.  It seems like people "remember" a lot of stuff for reporters during high profile situations like this.  Either way, it's still bad publicity.  Hence, they look bad.

No, but it DID look somewhat like a real gun and when they drew on me and yelled drop it, I turn around, waived it in the air and said 'But it's a squirt gun!'. I'm lucky I wasn't shot dead.

No wonder Cleveland Public Schools nearly went bankrupt. With such awesome background checks I am sure that the embezzlers and generally incompetent assholes who ran the system were checked as well.

In the district where I work, the bus companies (private) actively solicit potential employees from probie/parolee lists.  Mostly, this results in employees that are on their best behavior.

The school district that I work for runs background checks for every position, but doesn't require or administer drug tests.

At the same time, just because a company runs a background check doesn't mean they'll take action based on the results. I have seen several companies pick up their background check requests and dump them in a trash can without even looking at them. (I used to work as a police dispatcher and would run background checks.)

how would knowing about a history of domestic violence lead the police to focus on Castro?

there are probably tens of thousands of people in the greater Cleveland area with domestic violence records.

When I was in high school, the bus driver played April Fool's Day jokes on the freshman.  He was later replaced by a guy who would occasionally pull over to consider fighting a particularly annoying student.

Yeah, I'm failing to conjure up any significant outrage over this. More generally, our puritanical moralizing that brands any and every one with the slightest anti-social demerits as unfit to ever hold a job or be trusted again just continues to get more and more out of hand. And we'll be lucky to...

According to the article he had one arrest that never even resulted in an indictment, much less a conviction.

With that background, exactly what were they supposed to find that would have disqualified him?

Back in my day, squirt guns were made that were very close replicas of actual firearms. I could see the police giving a citation for disturbing the peace if he ran out of a bar with something that resembled an actual weapon. I can also see a judge agreeing to set it aside if you went to court over it as well.

Note to self:

Option 1: Drop squirt gun and then yell "It's only a squirt gun."

Option 2: Point it at cop and yell "Makin' bacon!"

Will I have time to flip a coin?

When I was in my mid 20s I got a call asking me about my school bus driver. Apparently they discovered he'd been touching some kids, though it wasn't made clear if they were relatives, kids from his route, or what. Throughout elementary school I got a ride from someone who worked there so I only took the bus a couple of dozen times. I do remember him inviting kids to come sit next to him in the front (safety wasn't a huge concern then) and I always found it a bit weird. He'd been driving kids on this rural bus route where it would be easy to be alone with someone at the end of the route for 30 years before any of this came out.

There was one incident that I remember. An older kid was picking on a first or second grader and the bus driver, after slapping and kicking the older kid around, gave him a huge lecture about not victimizing younger, smaller people who can't fight back. Way to follow your own ethics, douchebag.

2013-05-10 02:53:00 PM
Depending on how long he was a school bus driver, he could make a case for "the kids drove me to it."

I work as a school bus driver for the City of Manchester, NH for a year. If the school had just used a "3 strikes" policy, my life would have been so much easier.

It's the responsibility of the Cleveland Municipal School District to run background checks on their employees.

Ohio didn't start requiring the full 10-fingerprint checks for school employees against the BCI and FBI databases until 2008. Now, school employees are required to submit to the full 10-fingerprint check against BCI and FBI databases upon hire and against the FBI database every 5 years thereafter.

He was accused of domestic violence not convicted. Yeah he obviously did it but are we really willing to let our current 'guilty until proven innocent' culture go this far?
