I have to say I'm just not that impressed with it, I think the design could have been better. With all the building design going on in the world today, to me this just looks like we settled for something to reach a height.

/been watching her go up since day one

i saw it this morning on the way to work. The spire is absurdly big. The whole building looks like a narwhal standing up.

Something doesn't add up here.  I've never seen a building just go up like that before.  This was an inside job.

Glad to see they finally reached the finish line on this.  +10 America.

Good description.

let's just not call it "freedom tower," ok?

The building was designed by committee...and, it shows.

The antenna or spike or whatever they are calling it is cheating. I'm ok with a little cheating, but I would have liked it better if it looked better.

That does look pretty damn cool.

It is bold in a monolithic sort of way, but I agree it isn't particularly unique.  Of course, the WTC were two rectangular prisms... with five other rectangular prisms around them.  Not a high bar to clear.

Isn't there a corkscrew-based design tower going up in Chicago now, or did that get canceled?

Yes but they designed in 1962 and building design has come a long way since then. I just thought we could have done better for a landmark building like this. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it but when I look at it, it doesn't give me the "wow".

I came out of the PATH station directly under the building this morning and totally forgot to look up. Dammit. But I'll see it later, and every day from now on.

It's kind of in limbo, as I understand it.  They dug the hole for the foundation (which is still there) but no work has been done on it for years since then.

Yeah it should be shaped like a giant penis or something.

Wait until they test the ground-to-air missile batteries.

First, this has taken entirely too long to build. We should have had that building in place in a year, maybe two years at most. Instead, it will have taken 13 years by the time it opens. Second, that spire is lame. If you want to make the "tallest building" make the building the tallest building. The measurement should be to the highest ceiling of a usable floor of the building. Putting a spire on top just seems half-assed. Finally... that building inspires no great feelings of kind in me. It's too little, too late... and just another building at this point to me.

Yeah, pretty much this.  Spires shouldn't count when measuring one's penis length building height.

I always use the "Empire State was built during the Great Depression" argument to put into perspective the amount of time it took to built 1 World Trade. So personally I just see the building for what it is: New real estate for businesses and a tourist trap for 9/11 remembrance.

FTFY

also I agree with you on the design. We should've hire the architects that designed some of the buildings in Dubai or Asia. Got some really nice looking skyscrapers there.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Yeah it should be shaped like a giant penis or something.

Then you'd have to find a Coney Island whitefish big enough to drape it with.

2013-05-10 12:21:56 PM
So what are the chances that small micro-errors in cutting, or earth settlement beneath the crushing weight of the building have resulted in it being 1,775 feet? Paying tribute to the last time you guys were ruled properly.

2013-05-10 12:23:02 PM
I don't respect any height above the roof.

Your building has a giant tusk thingie?  Great.  Doesn't make the building any taller.

2013-05-10 12:23:08 PM
Glad I am not alone in thinking the spire height iS cheating and a lame way to measure it.

The whole 1776 thing is a bit heavy handed.
