That's always the joke, the best way to rob a bank is to own it.

They only took money from the banks without affecting individual depositors?

I like these guys.

I smell Hollywood adaptation in the future, starring George Clooney, Ice-T, and Yakov Smirnov.

Yeah, even with stealing $ 45,000,000 and being geniuses doing it....they *still* got caught.

That's the bad thing about being a criminal. It's not *if* you're going to get caught, it's when.
The ONLY (and this is debatable) person who EVER got away with his crime was.....

So this is the image of what NOT to do? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you don't steal millions by using <less> on an unreadable non-text file then taking a picture of it.

not really true, we only know about the ones who got caught.  Years ago, one person stole approximate $5 from a system of ATMs in one day.  Cops figure he had to be a former programmer on the systems because he exploited a known vulberability in the machines-0ne they still haven;t fixed because the occasional multi-million heist is still cheaper than patching every ATM in existance

I preferred Hepburn and O'Toole in The Lion in Winter; Hepburn was less... well, Belgian in that movie.

I still like the old fashioned way, a backhoe and a chain.

A well planned job, the only thing they have to do now is make sure they get away. All they have to worry about now is one of them screwing up and bringing the whole network down. Maybe the leaders should take a cue from the Lufthansa heist.

"The thieves plundered funds held by the banks that back up prepaid credit cards, not individual or business accounts"

Not clear how that worked.  Why would such backup accounts be accessible via ATM?

Well when you steal $45 dollars you can just disappear.  When you steal $45 million they will find you... unless you're already dead.

I'm going to guess the bank was too lazy to set up an account for each separate card, so all extant cards feed into one big account.  The 'cap' on each card is just coded, I gather.

Just a guess, though.

How to steal $45 million?

Is it a remake of How to steal $1 million?
