"Lost Boy Generation"? I'm pretty sure the downfall of TV quality is directly related to Reality TV shows geared toward women and middle-aged men who want to relive their glory years. Eg, Baby Boomers.

That has been the vicious cycle of most mature media companies except maybe Music. The Baby Boomers and leading edge Gen-Xers are the most reliable demo for them, so they will cater to them. Meanwhile Late-X, Gen-Y, and Millenials are horribly unreliable so they don't bother outside of the bare minimum. This has created a pair of feedback loops where it seems like the only commercials on regular Prime-Time are for those 45+ and the only ads on most popular websites are for 30-.

he future of television is bleaker than one might suspect from the quality of programming still available on HBO or FX

Chill Mr. Blogger - reality television will continue to perform its god-given task of siphoning off the idiots.  Television will be just fine.

There are auction shows, redneck masturbation shows, teen melodrama shows, and no-talent contests. There are outliers, but they're being weeded out and eliminated as we speak. I think, "Ow, my balls!" might be too highbrow for TLC.

The younger demo that is watching TV are women and girls and they are watching staged reality TV shows.  There's your current Millenial advertising demo. In 20 years, when that demo is in family mode they'll have sitcoms that are exactly like the ones today with references they'll get. The way it's been since I love Lucy.  Some moron Salon writer thinks that just because people like a show about Zombies, that really isn't a show about Zombies, that all shows in the future will be video-game-eqse.

I came to say what others already said. The future is now. "Ow my balls" basically describes 90% of the tv out there anymore. From non stop family guy and it's clone shows to reality tv. Cancelled cable a couple of years ago and just internets what I want to watch.

Combine that with adblocking my browsers, and I'm clueless as to new products, commercials and what I'm supposed to be buying according to the man. Works for me.

I had to adblock farks "stop adblocking me" banner too, farkers.

Whenever I flip past a reality show (The only one I ever actually watched was "The Osbournes"), I always flash on the film version of "Fahrenheit 451," the part where the wife is nagging her husband for another TV wall so she can interact even more with the people on the programs.

It's coming. . . .

It's actions like that precipitate the feedback loop we see in degenerating quality of non-niche programming. Until the basic funding mechanism of content production (from traditional TV to web-TV/Youtube/etc. stuff) changes, the things that get the money are going to be the things that can reliably deliver eyeballs for advertisers.

This is why print media is so farked if the trends continue, no one pays attention to print ads so why bother?

Well, when I think about a Lost Generation, look at what's happened to males in Japan. We're looking at a terrible vicious loop where they are having to cater to an increasingly odd group of 20-somethings that have very weird demands. So weird it's making it difficult for worldwide media producers (see Japanese video game and anime companies) market their products outside the borders in a widespread fashion.

If you go on anime forums, you see this in complaints about 'moe' anime being so predominant.

Sorry, this is WORSE than reality TV?

At least people are using this to play better. It least it's actually real.

I caught one of these reality shows, the one about the guy digging for fossils. I thought it might be interesting, about the history or whatever. But it was all just fakery, including most of the reactions from people. I'm not sure how real reality TV ever was, but why people are watching this stuff now, I don't know.

Long, rambling, hard to read diatribe complaining about how the next generation of whipper snappers is going to ruin the world. Repeat from 2003, 1993, 1983...

Hot news flash... the most popular thing in ANY generation is something really stupid and pointless (sports, fashion, music, etc...).

2013-05-10 10:13:23 AM
Yeah, I don't see how you can get any closer to "Ow, My Balls" than Tosh.0. Only Tosh.0 ads more scat and vomit humor.

I really will never understand reality TV. I'm not talking about "Fix My House, Asshole" or "Bastard Chef" or shows that while they have manufactured drama, do actually do stuff. But the ones with the vile human beings like "Guido Douchebag"  and "Obese Redneck" that feature people you would consciously walk across the street to avoid if you saw them IRL but someone somewhere is enthralled by them.

I guess it's a trade off, since even with all the horrible reality shiat, when TV is good, usually on cable, it's really good. Like better than most movies good. So the 4-5 shows I actually watch are better than almost anything I grew up with.

I would say that the entertainment industry needs to adapt its revenue model to the needs of a changing marketplace. It took the music industry almost a decade, but they almost have it, and had to be dragged there kicking and screaming by Apple of all things.

But instead what happens is that the entertainment industry lobbies the government to force people to play the game their way. And then wonders why savvy people just end up torrenting.

In my case, I'm a quality purist, so if I realllllly love something, I buy the blu-ray and they get their cut.

I'm friends with a Japanese exchange student at my school (I'm the old lady in the classes usually), but anyway he's maybe 19 and doesn't even really know anything about Anime or that part of their culture. He complains that that's what a lot of other students here assume about him when really he's just a soccer nut. He said he's hoping to go see the World Cup game in Brazil this summer. And they love, love, love to watch videos of other gamers playing video games.

This I do not understand.  Keep in mind, I started with an Atari 2600 and have kept at it  to this very day.  I adore gaming.  However, I don't get why my 13 yr old will sit for hours watching youtube clips of some jackass riding a minecart through his gold farm.  p.s. I just finished building my goldfarm :D

There's still some good stuff on, you just have to sort through a LOT of garbage to find it. It kind of makes me sad that shows like Jersey Shore, Desperate Housewives, and Honey Boo Boo exist and have regular viewership, but they do. The major networks are all but a total loss, but AMC still has some good shows. What is even more disturbing to me than the networks going down the crapper are that some of the best channels out there have completely sold out. NatGeo, Discovery Channel, TLC, etc. used to have shows that were both interesting and informative. There are still a few good things on them, but it seems like it's mostly Amish Mafia and Ancient Aliens and pseudo-reality bullshiat. Those channels used to cater to a crowd with some intellectual curiosity and more than 2 functioning neurons. Now they are about as informative as cable news.

If I could go back to any point in time for my entertainment, it would be right around 1985. The glory days of cable TV, when 3/4 of a program's hour wasn't either ads or promotions for other shows. My favorite show was USA's "Night Flight," a variety show that the network would start running around 9pm on Saturday nights and continue until 4-5am the next morning. My roommates and I would sometimes stay up all night.

2013-05-10 10:22:57 AM
I can't stand naming and dividing "generations."  There is no line in the sand or some magical point in time where one generation ends and the next one begins.  It's the worst kind of grouping because you're basing your analysis on age and not activity.  Also "Lost Boys" is the most overused nomenclature for this sort of grouping.  Aren't lost boys the ones thrown out of fundamental mormonism? Or those orphaned kids from that war with those dark people? Or the kids from the peter pan myth? Or just the movie from the 80s? No no, it's those gamer kids who play lots of video games.  I guess I took some offense to this article because I like video games, but I don't watch a lot of youtube, it's just a hobby; I've got a job and friends and I like the outdoors and stuff.    Anyway, I ended the article feeling the author needs to be the first contestant on "Ow, My Balls!"

Yeah, it is unfair to extrapolate on an entire nationality/ethnicity/demo based upon the 'worst' members. Also I wonder if we're gonna get a Japan vs. US rematch in the Women's Final, that game was pretty fun to watch as a casual soccer fan all things considered.

The problem is people see this as a recent issue when it's been the standard for the last 25 years. They act like it's something new because they didn't get exposed to it until the internet made it stupid easy to keep up with the stuff currently airing there and they still have their nostalgia glasses on full blast.

Yes, TV has never been better.  Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Shameless, Dexter.  That's just what's currently running.  Take the last 10 years or so  and you have: The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, BSG, The Sopranos, Curb,  Buffy and Angel, Arrested Development, The Tudors, Big Love, It's Always Sunny, etc. etc. etc.

/without reality TV, all of these shows would have to be dumbed down - kind of like back in the day when Hill Street Blues had to have the occasional car chase with wha wha 70s music so the idiots weren't scared away by the witty dialogue.
