I'm not sure if it's creepiest, but it loses points for allowing drunk college buddies to endorse me for skills I have not yet contemplated, let alone mastered.

The thing with the person having the same name as someone I knew happened to me a couple of years ago.  A girl I dated eons ago when the internet was made of archies, gophers, telnets and bbs.

We never had contact again and none of my current circle knows her since we met in another city that I never visited again.

I was scratching my head over that one for a few days.

I've noticed it too.  It's recommended people I barely knew in college and has even suggested bartenders of restaurants I frequent even though I'm prone to use cash.

On the other hand, LinkedIn has taught me that the proper term for a Hooters waitress is Customer Service Professional.

I'm going to have to say yes.

A girl I dated 5 years ago for about 3 months with zero shared connections AND not in remotely in the same industry popped up on the "People I May Know" last week...and she was at the top of the list.  WTF?!!??!

Even stranger that when I searched for my sister (who shares a fairly common name with this woman), she popped up in the 2nd spot.  WTF!??!?

And that they share info with google.

One of you farkers emailed me once and next thing I knew is you showed up under the people I may know. Really the creepiest Internet thing to me is google ads and marketing. It's starting to use me pandora and amazon history, which leads to some scary big brother shiat

You can do this all yourself on anyone if you take about 10 minutes using Google.

Why is everyone so surprised that computers and algorithms can do it faster?

I wouldn't know.
The only brush I've had with LinkedIn was when I googled my old bossy, who got "laid off" and retreated back over the Ohio River to Palookaville to work a line job and spend more quality time with her animals.
LinkedIn is perverse.

I use it strictly for professional contacts only, never had a problem.

/with 30 plus years in the ad bis in NYC, it helps keep this tight knit wierd community together.

I keep getting emails asking me to join. I will continue to get emails asking me to join. Because Im not joining. The internet is strictly for looking at pics of ladies and playing video games. I refuse to use it for productive things.

Yep.  You nailed it.  It's fun to be working on a critical project and tell your boss that you received 2 higher offers this month but not to worry because you're loyal to the company and appreciate who you're working with.  The gears will start turning pretty quickly.

I've yet to get anything useful out of Linkedin, having been on there 5 years.

If I want to stay in touch with former coworkers, I do so in private life and on Facebook. If I want some freelance work, I use my own site and referrals. Doing the early retirement, off the grid thing now, I just can't see the use of Linkedin.

The key to getting it working for you is to take that stack of business cards from your desk and add those contacts to your linkedin contacts.  Suddenly, you will be 2-3 degrees of seperation from a lot of HR folks and recruiters instead of completely unknown.

HR folks.  That's all you needed to know, right?  It's a deep trough of qualified candidates without way less crap to sift out than the online job sites.

It is shocking what social networks never consider what we want public.

Facebook groups are listed in every profile with no way to hide them.   I don't mind posting in a group that is public per se.  But does it have to be included in my friend's newsfeeds?    Being a non-celebrity, the only way they will wonder into such groups is if they were interested in the first place -- somewhat comparable to showing up in person.  But I certainly don't want discussions in a liberal group shoved into the news feed of a relative who ran for U.S. Congress as a teabagger.

Basically what I want to see on my timeline and what I want friends to see in my timeline is stuff that I put in my timeline.  If they want to see the comments I write to a friend's post then they should be his friend too.    Stuff from groups should only appear in their news feeds if they too are part of those groups.

2013-05-10 08:34:41 AM
I had a similar experience the first (and last) time I started to create a FB account.  The suggested "friends" that popped up creeped me out. People I knew, but with whom I'd had only minimal 'actual' social contact.  Well, fark that.

/Internet anonymity ftw

I guess that makes sense if you're looking for a new jorb. Hopefully, I'll never be doing that again.

Maybe I'll keep it open and enhance it with a bunch of outrageous claims like I had an affair with Winston Churchill and invented the drop-down oxygen masks on airplanes.

See if anyone's really paying any attention.

"The game is simple. Go through your connections and pick out the profile of someone who happens to be, in your opinion, um...a young, attractive female. ...Chances are, they are of more, erm, young and attractive females. "

I tried this with a young attractive intern and it did not work. So, this guy is paranoid.

These behaviors are probably because you gave LinkedIn permission to access your Gmail contacts. At least that's why it recommends a girl I went on a few dates with in 2006.

Still, given how little masturbation to profile pictures happens on LinkedIn compared to other social sites, I can't see how it qualifies as creepiest.

Mugato: Then why are you guys members?

I was purely for professional reasons. Thought building a network would help with jobs. But all linkedin ever got me was recruiter spam, via email and calls. Hell, one of the farkers called me at work! I don't have my work number on the site, hell, I had no phone numbers listed on my profile at all. This farker saw my current company, googled it, got the number, called the directory and cold called me. That takes balls man. And really, who wouldn't be interested in a 6-month contract at a company 3,000 miles away for less pay than I'm making now? You recruiters sure know your shiat! Just recently closed the account because of it, got no value and was tired of the spam.

Roflol.  That is so true!  I, too, tire of those silly emails.  Plus the ones which are "You were selected due to your compatibility with our requirements" which had nothing to do with my skillset.  $14.00 data entry!  Yeah...add a 0 before that decimal and we can talk.  (ha-ha, and no, not BEFORE the 1...after the 4.)

Again, this is simply probably because there are a lot of people on FB that are trying to maximize their number of "friends" as some sort of game to get the highest score and be the best person on facebook or whatever. They have probably gone through their old school photobook or whatever and searched for every name in the book to try and find people. Facebook tracks these sorts of searches so that if you haven't created an account when they search, they can suggest the connection later when/if you do.

I got a job offer from LinkedIn right when I needed a job offer.  But everything else from that site is worthless.  The technical discussions have posts from overseas idiots asking "How do I do (this basic function I could have googled in two minutes)?" "What do you think about (this very common problem everyone knows how to solve)?"  And the endorsements are just ridiculous.

I got an invite from my sister asking to connect on there.  No, I said, I keep my internet spheres separate.  LinkedIn is for coworkers and recruiters only; no family.  Facebook is for friends and family; no professional contacts.

Ding!

LinkedIn will tell you (some of) who has viewed your profile.  Pay extra and you can see everyone who has viewed your profile.  It uses this sort of ghost network to identify or at least guess at associations that you haven't explicitly stated.
