Aw man! You have one good opportunity to use the ironic tage, and you screw it up! Shame, shame, shame on you!

Dumbass poster

I think the point I came to make has already been covered. :-)

40" of new snow is just enough to get down the mountain. I remember back in 19 dickety 2 (we had to call it 'dikity' back then 'cause the Kaiser stole our word for 'twenty') we wouldn't go to the resort unless there was at least 80" of snow. We skied with snorkels, but back then, they were called flim flams.

Late again...

Dickity? Highly Dubious.

I want to go check out the screaming beaver mentioned. Sounds hot.

2003-12-31 12:28:58 PM
Yeah, pretty ironic that there is no ironic tag.. I would have expected it.

2003-12-31 12:29:01 PM
"Dickity" is a perfectly cromulent word.

2003-12-31 12:32:30 PM
Bah, beaten to it. I'm still saying it though:
One time the Ironic tag could be properly used, and it's not.

2003-12-31 12:34:48 PM
In Salt Lake I was snowboarding in 40" of snow all day yesterday, at a resort. Hmm... I wonder what this says about Montana snow enthusiasts?

2003-12-31 12:36:00 PM
Yeah, go ahead and wreck that 40" of fresh powder by packing it down for all the useless amatuer skier's out there.

2003-12-31 12:36:39 PM
LordKat summed it up nicely.

Fortunately, the fresh, duckdown like, snow was in an area that amateur skiers couldn't get to if they tried (unless they had a helicopter).

Strange tag? More like Ironic.

Aaargh.

I did an online interview w/ Drew a month or two back for the website I write for (shameless promotion: http://www.newmoanyeah.com/2003-features/120103_interview_with_drew_curtis.php )

Anyhow, one of the first questions I asked him was about how FARKers just cant seem to get a grasp on the concept of irony...

2003-12-31 12:54:48 PM
TheSkiBum69 beat me to it. (sorta)

Those wusses should just put on some fatty skis and pack that glorious powder themselves. Unless of course they had no base to start with. The article dosen't say, and I'm too lazy to look it up.

2003-12-31 12:58:11 PM
Twoody, I meant the resort, not your snowboarding adventure. It's just IRONIC the comments came up back to back.

2003-12-31 12:58:56 PM
Meanwhile in Ontario we've had nothing but rain recently. Damn, damn, damn. There's like no snow on the ground anymore.

Napoleon_B is deep in thought...

...or the filters changed something.

2003-12-31 01:03:13 PM
Oh, Napoleon_B is new here and typed the dreaded two words that gets someone bumped to the end of the line.

2003-12-31 01:03:30 PM
It's called avalanche, dude. Too much snow all at once leads to massive avalanche. The have to wait until the snow settles.

also, have you actually been IN a winter storm on the mountain? I have. You can see between 10 and 20 feet. Ice builds up on the side of your face. You get exhausted trying to trudge through the deep troughs of snow. You sink into the snow and fall frequently. You can't ski because the 50 mph winds blow you over...

I work at a ski resort in PA. Last year we got a great dump of magnificant snow. About 5 feet of it. In order to get the lift chairs running we had to jump through our backsides to clear a tunnel for them to move through. Took a few hours, and we couldn't open the slopes before we got 'em moving. As someone who has had to shovel snow with a mess of angry skiiers/boarders, I feel their pain.

Worth all the digging tho, and I agree. IRONIC applies.

2003-12-31 01:09:56 PM
hmm... well we haven't gotten any here...

ARGH! you stole all of our damn snow!!!!!

2003-12-31 01:10:14 PM
Yes... This would've been a great opportunity to use the ironic tag. Regardless, this isn't that strange...

They had to close down Mt. Baker Ski Resort here in Washington a few years ago because the snow had become so deep that it had completely covered the ski lift towers. In fact, by this point, the level had already risen above the towers, and they had dug out trenches for the ski lifts to run in. I guess it became too dangerous. Unfortunate, perhaps. Not strange.

Congratulations, Napoleon_B! F/irst post of the year, with still between 11 and 14 hours until the New Year! (assuming you're in North America)

Hey, I think I know what Napoleon_B is doing...

Has anyone eve heard of WANGSTERBATION???

Skibum
My bad, I guess I misunderstood. Either way, 40" of snow is something every winter sports enthusiast should experience at least once in their lifetime.

2003-12-31 01:25:17 PM
It's a tiny intermediate hill. You can't ski deep powder when it's flat.

2003-12-31 01:35:33 PM
meanwhile...to the south....Bridger Bowl get's 71" in like 24 hrs and have to delay their opening (not for the season...just that day and the next 1/2 day to do avi control.)

And yes...it's is a tiny intermeadiate hill..although I haven't skied there yet....it's on my to-do list.

2003-12-31 01:37:30 PM
first one to think of this?

12 inches of Snow

2003-12-31 01:38:30 PM
I actually live in Bozeman Montana, where the ski mountain got pounded so freakin hard thay couldn't open it, either. The lifts were "snowed in". The town itself is rediculous... people are stuck in the middle of popular streets. They opened the mountain two days ago after being closed because of too much snow, and my friend went. When he was going down the hill, he saw some wierd black thing poking out the the snow and figured he better stop because he ran it over. Turns out it was a guy's ski helmet, who was 6'2" and buried completely in the snow. After a half hour of digging they got the poor bastard out. My friend almost beheaded the guy. Fun stuff.

And for all of you who have been wondering, I have confirmed that Pine Ridge ski area in Barre, Mass. WILL be opening this year.

That is all.

'nother Billings Gazette story...
I don't ski, but I guess Red Lodge had the best skiing in Montana last winter; it's reputation in less snowy years is the "Red Lodge rock dodge." I actaully like driving in the snow, and I got to go tearing around the snowy back roads yesterday, the excuse being that some friends and I were going sledding. I like winter.

2003-12-31 02:03:28 PM
Actually, my first thought was of The Shining... I mean, the plot is that a hotel in the mountains closes over the winter? Um..... ok.

2003-12-31 02:04:22 PM
S'pht'Kr, I was up at Red Lodge just a few days ago after they recieved a full 12 inches of snow. It was one of the worst snowboarding days of my life:

The normally 45-min drive took over 2 hours and when we did finally get there, the winds were blowing so hard, all 12 inches of snow were blown off the mountain. I was nearly blown off the mountain myself on more than one occasion.

But damn I wish i could have gone to Bridger when they got 5 feet in 24 hours.

Thanks to Dr. Knockboots I have that insipid "Informer" song going through my head.

Aaaagh! Make it stop!

Professor Frink
The combination of strong winds and low temperatures can turn the best skiing, boarding, or whatever other outdoor snow activities, into junk. Sometimes it's nice to enjoy it through a window with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

The roads have been pretty bad recently. I remember sometime last winter when it snowed a couple feet in three or four days; people in cars tried to drive up to the mountain, got stuck, and hitched a ride from people going up in 4x4s. I guess they had a lot of fun cleaning up that mess of cars.

2003-12-31 03:39:47 PM
Don't you all get it, the only time the IRONIC tag can't be used is when the article is actually ironic.
