I've smuggled turtles before...but only usually after very long morning meetings.

G'night, Ned.

Violating the Lacy act is a felony. One of the reasons I only deal cash anonymously with animals that could be contraban if someone tries smuggling them into another state or another country.

I am guessing not for pets. Being China, I am guessing a completely spurious cure for "X". X being anything from the "vapors" to baldness.

Hey, the Chinese are involved. What imaginary curative properties do turtles have in their shiatmedicine I wonder?

"According to charging documents, Nathanial Swanson, owner of Seattle Reptiles in Everett and Swanee's Exotics, was paid more than $15,000 between August 2008 and October 2012 ..."

If you're doing something where if you get caught you face felony charges, you should demand more than $15,000 over a four year run.

Box turtles are endangered? Too bad.
I was in kentucky about 20 years ago and they were as common as raccoons.

"endangered" WTH?

Have personally 'helped-cross-the-road' dozens of them just the past few years. Illegal to export to China, absolutely! Endangered, I don't think so...

Gila monsters go for $3000 to $5000 apiece.  IDK why he was fooling with turtles.

This is going to sound really racist, but... farking Chinese!

Westerners sure had their day of killing everything that moved, but they seem to at least be trying to moderate the tendency (which seems to be painfully hard for the human species in general). The Chinese, unfortunately, still have the "it moves - kill it" mentality and now they have the money to export it elsewhere. So rhinos, elephants, sharks, and apparently lots of other things are all targets. I think this is more "sad" than "strange".

Humans have a talent for killing and destruction that unfortunately eclipses their capacity to love other living things. We are a sad species.

Spoken like someone who has never tasted a delicious turtle.

The 17th century British pirate, explorer and naturalist William Dampier wrote that "They are so extraordinarily large and fat, and so sweet, that no pullet eats more pleasantly," while Captain James Colnett of the British Navy wrote of "the land tortoise which in whatever way it was dressed, was considered by all of us as the most delicious food we had ever tasted."

Biodiversity is great and all, but I'm pretty sure you're only concerned with macro-fauna.  How about a little love for the mites, molds, bacteria, etc?  I mean really, how many times have you ruthlessly killed millions by washing your hands?  Did you really need to do that?  What crime could justify the death of so many?

Hey now, the mites bite us first, and the bacteria don't respect boundaries.

It's those poor, poor spiders I cry for.  Eating cockroaches for us, killing mosquitoes, generally keeping the pest population down and most species absolutely harmless to us, and yet, the genocide continues.  The only thing on the planet that works harder than spiders to try and make humans like him, and failing, seems to be LeBron James.
