I remember reading a few months ago about something similarly stupid (not sure if it was by these same clowns) regarding happiness of different cities in the country based on tweets.  Since the word "wine," regardless of its context, counted as a point toward "happy," Napa Valley ended up being the happiest place in the country.

Anyway, stupid study is stupid.  If you're just looking at frequency of word appearance, you're going to have an idiotic study.  It really can't be THAT hard to write a program that would take the context of certain keywords (rather than just frequency) into account.  It might not be perfect, but at least farking TRY.

New Year's Day is worse.

Snopes.

To be fair I've felt like I'd rather be dead on NY Day a number of times.

All tweets originating in Disney World have a smiley face at the end. Florida state law.

I think you'd be better off going from Oct 30 to Jan 1, since Oct 31 = Dec 25.

It customary to use those words on Christmas.  How about measuring the incidence of "I'm feeling good" and "I have suspended my suicide plans for now."

"and there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'"
