Wonder how koala tacos taste.  Koalas eat only eucalyptus,  right?  Bracing flavor, I imagine.

Now, however, serving lion meat is becoming a point of pride.

Exactly how much cat ass have you tasted that you recognize the flavor?

Lions are pretty. Therefore I do not eat them.

Kinda stupid, I don't see lions yielding a whole lot of meat.  Plus, it sounds spendy as shiat with shipping.

SquiggsIN: blame PETA?

seriously, look at the other animals they put on tacos!  What's the big deal about a lion?  Is it just because it's feline?  Seriously, all you cat people need to drop dead with your mange-ridden fleabags.

Psst, the story highlighted that the lion is classified as "threatened, not endangered".
Threatened isn't good.

Some hipster foodie douches get enjoyment out of it, though, so I'm against it just by that principle.

"I'm outraged that you serve cute animals for food!" Really? I'm outraged that we only eat the ugly ones - it's  like we're picking on the ugly ones for being unattractive. "Damn, cow, you're really not pretty - get on the bun, there, Bessie."

There's room for all of Nature's children, right next to the mashed potatoes.

My first thought was "WTF!" but then I read this:

"The lion meat is authentic, Gougeon said, and comes from a farm that raises the animals for meat. Such a practice is legal in the United States because lions are only considered threatened, and not endangered."

And now I'm pretty meh on it. Though I'm curious where this farm is.

Ehh I don't know. This website says they'll ship you a pound of lion burger meat for $9.95 (don't know shipping costs, can't be too bad per pound). If they're selling these at $35, sounds like they've got a pretty good margin on it.

2013-05-09 08:14:00 PM
Eh, people are morons. Seriously, this is just stupid.  So pigs, which have been shown to be smart- okay cows and their babies are okay, fish even endangered ones -okay. Feline? No. I don't get it.

As long as the animals are raised humanely and killed in a humane method that reduces suffering, I'm okay with this. Most of the animals raised for meat in this country aren't raised humanely.   That I'm not down with. Sure nature's not nice or neat whatever but farming's a controlled practice by us supposedly able to empathize beings.

That said,   I wouldn't eat the taco 1) that taco looks gross 2) I'm not paying $35.00 for an effing taco and 3) I don't eat mammal.  Serious that is one unappetizing picture.

2013-05-09 08:14:04 PM
If I lived there I would go support his right to sell lion tacos. Wouldn't buy a $35 taco though. I balk at $10 tacos in regular Mexican restaurants.

Ohh and I just realized it said "(not available)" next to the meat, but I figure you could use it as an example.

I'd try one, if they weren't $35/piece.

Same here. If they're being raised for food I'm OK with it. I mean, would cows and pigs exist in their current domesticated form if we didn't eat them?

After all the interest generated in the gourmet hot dog thread a long while back, I don't think Fark have any business complaining about a 35 dollar taco, which no doubt costs as much as those hot dogs.

In general, isn't most meat from predators pretty nasty? Then again, these lions are farm raised, but still.

Ehh, lions are very very lazy creatures, I'd imagine the meat isn't as tough as you'd think.

Comsamvimes:

There's a farm outside of Chicago, at least that's where the stuff I got was from.  I went to a little exotic food market once, and they had lion meat for something like $12 a pound, so I figured what the hell and bought it.  The burgers were fine.  Different flavor, a little bit gamy, but not terrible.  I wouldn't buy it again, just because it's pricey, but if someone gave me a pound or two, I wouldn't turn them down.

Didn't they used to have a branch in Halas?

That part of "Pulp Fiction" always kinda bugged me, because it's not true. Pigs are only dirty because farmers cram them together in pens. They're actually quite cleanly by nature. I guess chalk it up to Jules simply being uneducated.

Burger meat is going to be cheap.  Looks like they're using cuts of steak.

Generally, a well run restaurant charges 3x the cost of the food.  But that's for a fairly static menu where every item gets delivered by a single vendor.  If they're putting up new, exotic items on a regular basis, they have to add the cost of that process to the food.  First they have to dream up the new item, then find a vendor, then do some test recipes, then train the staff to cook the new dish, then update the menu, etc.  That's a lot more overhead than a regular taco stand.

FWIW, I really can't comprehend the outrage.  It's meat from an animal.  Nearly every restaurant in the world sells dishes that contain animal meat.  Why is it such a big deal that the meat comes from a cat instead of a cow or a chicken or a pig?

And Gougeon knows it comes from a farm how?  Oh, that's right, because his supplier said so!

When you're dealing with an unusual/exotic/threatened species, you'd better have documented provenenance all the way down the supply chain to ensure you're buying what you think you're buying.
