They learned that lesson in the 90s - I guess there may be hope for them yet, once they get over the fact that Obama beat them like a drum twice.

No, but they have used a record amount of filibusters and got the US credit rating downgraded by taking the debt limit hostage for the first time ever. That's pretty historic, wouldn't you say?

They are sharpening their knives and getting ready to do it all over again, too.   You know, because it went so well the first time.  I wonder if they will take credit for and give blame to Obama for the next sequester?

Like when Bush put 2 expensive wars on the national credit card, forced Medicare part B, and other wastes of money.

The nice thing about being in the minority is that now white Americans can apply for better business loans and cheaper college tuition... I would say 'White is the new Black', but that would discount the Chinese that built the railroads.

NAH.

Want to take odds what course the Dems take next time the pendulum swings and they are the minority?  (hint:  last time they obstructed too).  It's the game.  Both sides do it when they are in the minority.  Give up the holier than thou attitude.

Political theater that you can hardly blame on the Republicans.

So ok with this. If you want a vote now and figure out what's in it Congress go right ahead. I'm thankful they are slowing that type of shiat down.

cameroncrazy1984: got the US credit rating downgraded by taking the debt limit hostage

in part. But the large part was/is the debt-to-GDP ratio.

I like the way Daniel Indiviglio the Atlantic put it:
But S&P must be counting on more than just Republicans acting insanely enough to cause default: Democrats would have to act just as irresponsibly. After all, spending and entitlement cuts alone can easily allow the U.S. to avoid default. The agency makes this point, saying that the nation needs entitlement cuts and/or more tax revenue. S&P must assume that Democrats, like Republicans, could reach a limit of how much they'll concede and just let the U.S. economy burn on mere principle.

2013-05-09 06:05:08 PM
Why can't people just do exactly what the President wants all the time?

IT'S NOT FAIR!

Making 37 unsuccessful attempts to repeal the President's landmark legislation is not really what I'd call 'putting forwards some ideas'.

2013-05-09 06:09:11 PM
this is actually quite simple reasoning on behalf of the Republicans, they would not consider their actions obstructionism for the simple fact that they don't see this country as the multi-cultural-racial-religious-mixed bag-o-nuts & everything under the sun that it is.

they see it as their country, not ours.

they aren't obstructing, they are cleansing.

They're not "slowing" it down. They're stopping it completely. They're shutting things down that even get GOP votes, like the background check bill. You're seriously telling me that every single bill ought to get 60 votes? That's not how democracy is supposed to work.

2013-05-09 06:10:18 PM

Soup4Bonnie: wat?

You see on one side of the equation you have costs and on the other side you have revenue. If you must have more revenue than costs you have two choices: cut costs or increase revenue.

"Do what the President wants" or "Stop the President from doing anything of value at all".

This is the mind of the modern conservative. Extremes only, no nuance or middle ground.

And people wonder why young generations think Republicans are worthless.

You do realize that what they're slowing down is doing their farking jobs, right?  This is not, "OMG, if we don't threaten to filibuster the Democrats are going to pass this horrible bill!"  This is "OMG, if we don't threaten to filibuster we might have to actually do our jobs and discuss this bill!"

The Republican Party is not better at cutting spending.
The Republican Party is not better at defending the country.
The Republican Party is not better at reducing the size of government.

All of these statement are easily documented facts.

Stopping bad bills from becoming law is more important than passing a good law.

WE ARE WINNING!!!

The Stealth Hippopotamus: You see on one side of the equation you have costs and on the other side you have revenue. If you must have more revenue than costs you have two choices: cut costs or increase revenue.

You see, raising the debt limit or defaulting on the debt has nothing to do with costs or revenue.  Congress already approved the spending.  Now they don't want to pay the bill.  Spending and entitlement cuts won't do dick all to the debt ceiling.

Why am I bothering with you?  I've seen you troll and you do it better than this.  Enjoy the day.  The field is yours.

Absolutely true. While the ultimate goal is to stop a Democratic President from achieving anything substantial (too late, btw, assholes. Obamacare ring a bell?), Republicans are using the filibuster to give them cover from having to explain their incredibly stupid, irresponsible, and provably false ideas on every modern policy in this country. A filibuster keeps them from making fools of themselves in public view.

Yes...anytime a consequence of the sequester is on display, it's just "political theater".

It's like the Republicans didn't realize there are consequences to the sequester just like there are consequences to every decision one makes in their lives.

"Alright, let's cut some spending"
"What? You didn't tell me that was going to include the air traffic controllers. This is all Obama's fault!"
