Yeah, the horse has already left the barn on that one.

DEFCAD files are being removed from public access at the request of the US Department of Defense Trade Controls.
Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.

Well, that sure as heck took a while and is, frankly, bullshiat.

Yep, that's just how you respond to a troll...

/farking internet, how does it work?

I don't actually believe that, frankly.

If this is an export control problem it could be fixed by doing a location lookup on the source IP address and prohibiting un-American addresses from reading the files.

20 years ago you had to be careful what you put on an ftp site because somebody on the "naughty countries" list might grab it. Cryptography was the big problem. One of the big computer makers (DEC?) wanted to put a fast machine on the net for people to login to to port software. They had to disable public access when lawyers figured that was the same as exporting a supercomputer to naughty countries.

I believe that the government has the power to seize a domain name, and they will do so if it's deemed it a public threat. That was not done in this case, although I will note that the site is now farked, cue the conspiracy theories.

Except that since then, it's been shown that you can't really do that, because First Amendment.

This isn't exporting a gun, it's exporting a file that describes how to make a gun.  And it's a futile attempt:  the file is out there now.

Even if you *COULD* get all versions of it off the net, just the fact that it can be done means it will be done again.

Actually, the downloads from the site work for some things, but not the Liberator or AR-15 mag.

I was on the site before it went down. All it said was that they had been forced to take down the things.

There are numerous torrents floating around for that one. Some have more than that some less.

Facts are that it's human nature to want something that people tell us that we can't have.

They're also probably disguising it as a popular album or something so they can fly under the radar...

like every other incident of politicians and guns, they are trying to shut it down just because it looks scary.
Its just a damned zip gun; can be made with a tub some wadding and a nail.

put in ip block so only US ips can connect, problem solved

It sounds like they are going to claim people from Best Korea and Cuba could download the files and thus it was an export violation

There are gun plans all over the internet. Picking on this one this isn't a reasonable course of action.

/It also doesn't seem legal, for that matter.
/Someones constitutionals are getting violated and the ensuing lawsuit should be pretty interesting.
/The only problem is who gets to run it? NRA, EFI, ACLU?

2013-05-09 04:28:34 PM
This reminds me of when DeCSS was published.  The gov "shut down" access to that too.  It didn't stop everyone and their grandmother from getting a copy both before and after the "shut down" notice.

So ... yea ... good luck with your attempts at making instantly/infinitely copyable information unobtainable.

The stupid never ends with you, does it?

They can try to regulate it. Doesn't mean they're going to have much success with it.

They've replaced it.

It no longer prints a gun, but a giant dildo.

So, yes, it's still a penis replacement.

2013-05-09 04:28:53 PM
i've been joking in many gun threads that we need to just ban children instead of guns, and the problem will resolve itself in a few generations. i've had a change of heart.
screw it. make guns mandatory. no restrictions at all. issue a gun at birth. subsidize the ammunition industry to allow unlimited ammo for said guns issued at birth. no loss due to criminal activity. full 2a protection for all, from birth to death.
combine that with our increased decimation of our educational system, and increased legislation against abortion, and we'll have a nation of armed idiots to take us into a darwinian paradise.
