Wow, subby you are a farking idiot. A northbound train had their attention, probably blowing it's whistle. The southbound train that hit them was an Amtrak train, probably traveling between 30-60 MPH. Do you realize how fast something traveling 30 MPH can close on you?

For the same reason the train uses them; they're straight, flat, and free of vegetation.

Trains are dangerous killers... a menace to society.  That's why there has been a drastic drop in rail line miles since the 1950s, to protect our children, and our children's children.

And now so are the idiots who were walking on the train tracks. Well, probably not entirely free of vegetation now, with all the daisies they're pushing up. And really can't say about the straight bit either, story doesn't make any reference to them prancing or anything, but you never know these days. But flat, yeah that's pretty much covered.

These accidents often happen, because trains cannot stop quickly.

No, dumbass mainstream media dickhead, these accidents always happen because someone is on the train tracks when they shouldn't be which is when a train is coming and is going to hit them.

Katolu: Why walk on farking train tracks?!

Seriously, this. You can walk off to the side of the tracks just about as easily as on them, in every place I've ever seen them where people might walk.

"A train is four thousand times the size of a car, which is the same ratio as a car to a soda can, so the impact a train has when it hits a vehicle is the same as the impact of your average-sized automobile hitting a soda can," Janice Cowen, state coordinator for Operation Lifesaver, said during a safety training seminar in Florence last fall.

This is the most idiotic analogy I have heard in a long time. The impact of something hitting something isn't a question of size, but of mass. A 2000 pound car has 62,000 times the mass of a soda can, assuming 31 soda cans to the pound. A train, assuming 10,000 tons of rolling stock, has 10,000 times the mass of a 2000 pound car.

Either way you're screwed,  but the soda can thing is just silly.

I like radio shack. If you work on or repair your own electronics, they usually have what you need. It's nice if you just want to run and grab a part instead of ordering online and waiting a week.

put a dead rat on the railroad tracks for yuks once.
It just exploded. Yuk.
Also, a man sat on the tracks behind our apartments at 3am. I can still hear the grinding and strain of weight on metal as the train tried to stop in time. Whistle blasting. The man never moved. Days later they were still finding peices of him down the line.
I still think about that guy over 20 years ago. How bad he wanted to die to stay right there while hell was coming from behind him.
It was his birthday.

FTA: "Dead men never saw train that hit them."

To be fair, there are a lot of things dead men don't see. They aren't exactly known for their situational awareness.

In college there were tracks right next to our apartment that ran straight over to where some of us had classes.  It was a quick route to class and crossed over a major roadway.  It was just a single track and had a signal at one end, so we learned the schedule and how to read the signal.  Only rarely would a train come and we had to actually move off the track.  This was really close to the town, so the trains were moving pretty slow by then.

Only issues were with the track workers who had a truck modified to run on the rails for maintenance.  It had an electric motor, and they liked to get up behind students and blow their horn.

FTFA: "It takes them about a mile, which is equivalent to the length of 18 football fields, to stop"

When did they lengthen the mile?  Or is a football field no longer 120 yards long?

This was a poorly written article.  The editor(s) should be ashamed.

Yes it's pretty nasty, the position im in i am the first one called to goto the scene of the accideent. Walking up and seeing a baby's car seat laying on the side of the tracks kinda changes ya. I was serious about the nightmares and waking up sweat soaked screaming. One of my partners spent many years in vietnam and this doesn't bother him a bit, i'm not there yet..
