(Deadspin)   Make your jokes about Joe Girardi and The Binder, but having Vernon Wells play third base and batting a pitcher 8th resulted in a Yankees win. All hail The Binder   ( divider line

Well, batting the pitcher 8th instead of 9th is, in general, a good managerial move, so...

I don't know how much credit Girardi deserves, but the Yankees are squeezing every last bit out of the roster they assembled on the fly when half their team went down with injuries. Vernon Wells and Travis Hafner contributing anything at all is more than I thought would happen, anyway. Something is definitely going right.

Managers should do this kind of crap more often. Not because it makes a difference, but for the entertainment value of it.

Here's an idea: if your starting pitcher is left-handed (say), put a right-handed pitcher in the outfield, and maybe have your knuckleballer* play first. Then swap them around according to the handedness of the batter, with the knuckleballer coming in for switch-hitters and every batter whose uniform number is prime.

A good idea? No, but it'd give the broadcasters something to talk about.

You should always have a knuckleballer on your pitching staff, something approximately 29 teams are negligent about. Ideally, you should also have an underhander and a switch-pitcher.
