(Asahi Shimbun)   After deciding it was a bad idea to idle the workers at the Kaesong industrial complex, Best Korea asks big Chinese brother if they can mow his lawn or wash his windows. China's response: No thanks, we're good   (ajw.asahi.com) divider line 69

I love it when a plan comes together.

who the hell PAINTS a floor?

"Hi! I have no concept of cultures other than my own!"

Well, i'm sorry to hear that, but i'm still asking the question.

"Although it's relatively uncommon to see painted wood floors today, as clear-coated hardwood has become the preferred option for most homeowners, they were once a staple of interior design."

What kind of flooring do you want to paint?

Or, you know, you could just Google "painting floor" and see what comes up.

Yeah, I know of some friends who painted their basement floors. Concrete.

drxym: I've never got why South Korea even agreed to the Kaesong complex. It seems right up there on the "bad idea" scale next to allowing a mental patient to shave your balls.

besides the remarkable scenery, many of them have FAMILY up there

Shadow Blasko: God I hate business-speak for terms that are COMPLETELY divorced from reality... usually relating to bad things happening to employees.

I hate how the personnel department has become the human resources department.  Hear that? We're not persons, we're resources like electricity, timber and crude oil.  And you want resources as cheap as you can get 'em.

dionysusaur: Totally stupid thought, but wouldn't Best Korea do more damage by just opening their borders and letting go? Sure the brass would have to Jamestown all at once, but what a fark you to the world.

How would that do damage exactly?

I know you mean, OMG refugees, but really, that stuff happends all the time. There's millions of refugees, and they're hardly doing damage. All they're doing mostly is sitting in refugee camps and being miserable.

I imagine Worst Korea would be in a dilemma, because they're Koreans. So I guess they'll make sure they're fed and not cold, and well, still the same. Big deal?

bmwericus: Well, I for one am surprised.  Pleased no end, it's about time China quit propping up Kim's in the NK.  Seriously, its like China uses NK so they can say "See, you are not as bad off as they are in N. Korea!  Stop complaining!"

Not that the Chinese Gov't could EVER be that cynical.

I'm trying to imagine the untapped potential in a people who have been started their entire lives - I mean, look at what happed to Germany, Japan, S. Korea after their respective wars.  I like to imagine that if they were freed and fed, they would bust their asses as productive members and the next generation would be pretty amazing - the old "you kids don't know what it was like in the old days, work hard, make something of yourself"...

It may not be the worlds best farmland, but damn, they eat GRASS.

Bugger the Kims...with a railroad crosstie.  On fire.

Bravo. Most NK citizens, I hope, would work hard to regain their humanity. Unfortunalty, they may be the furtherest things from it, at this point. I think it's more likely they'll change drivers, but not the cart.

I've painted a floor.

It was a stage floor, but it was a floor. I also once painted a garage floor.

Happy?

Well, i'm sorry to hear that, but i'm still asking the question.

Also, the reason i'm asking is, would paint really last long enough with any kind of foot traffic to be worth the cost of painting the floor? What kind of surface would you need to even take the paint?

Well, there is concrete sealer, and epoxy floor paint for those surfaces.

sanding and sealing hardwood floors with poly urethane...

high traffic area are usually painted because they are high traffic areas that are prone to chemical and water damage

I have a house built in 1917.  when I bought the house, the wood floor was painted.  After doing some digging (because my reaction was ALSO why paint a floor) it turns out in that time frame the choice was to pain the floor, or wax it every freaking day.  And in a working family, who has the time or energy to waste waxing when you can paint it and just be done with it?

Oh,  and yes, I have redone by floors.  I've got a nice California Redwood down now.  Looks MUCH better.

I can't imagine paint would wear off much faster than a stain/varnish treatment on a hardwood floor either.

That's what I love about Fark, a news article about rising tensions in East Asia leads to an argument about painting floors.

Private_Citizen: Best Korea needs to suck it up, release the American, and reopen Kaesong.

If they're really short on money, start arranging mail order brides/husbands (for a fee, of course). BK gets much needed cash, and some BK citizens get to leave the country. It's a win/win.

If North Korea ever does open its borders I suspect every young decent looking woman in the country will head for the international marriage market. Poverty is the biggest reason women do that and you don't get much poorer than Best Korea.

A warehouse I worked in years ago used to paint the cement floor every few months. Once someone elft a pallet truck somewhere and we arrived the next day to find they had neatly painted around it.

/And TV studios usually paint the floor for each production, and then strip the paint at the end of each day so they can repaint it the next day.

Meh... that's nothing. We once devised a plan that would have led to world peace during an argument about topiary.

And, just for the record, Mr or Ms "Know It All"... you're still farking wrong about your choice of shears...you...you... well, you know who you are. I'll see you in hell.

I cant imagine china has any inclination to give nk money which is all this really amounts to, I'm sure they have all the labour skilled or otherwise, that they need.

Am I supposed to have the slightest clue what you're talking about, or was that meant for someone else?

Given the average nutritional level of a common North Korean, this may be a case where "sharp knees" is a literal problem.

Sharp but brittle.
