Also: Most Best Koreans are probably so brainwashed from their own propaganda, they'd be afraid to even step a foot foward in South Korea's direction.

Well, I for one am surprised.  Pleased no end, it's about time China quit propping up Kim's in the NK.  Seriously, its like China uses NK so they can say "See, you are not as bad off as they are in N. Korea!  Stop complaining!"

Not that the Chinese Gov't could EVER be that cynical.

I'm trying to imagine the untapped potential in a people who have been started their entire lives - I mean, look at what happed to Germany, Japan, S. Korea after their respective wars.  I like to imagine that if they were freed and fed, they would bust their asses as productive members and the next generation would be pretty amazing - the old "you kids don't know what it was like in the old days, work hard, make something of yourself"...

It may not be the worlds best farmland, but damn, they eat GRASS.

Bugger the Kims...with a railroad crosstie.  On fire.

Best Korea needs to suck it up, release the American, and reopen Kaesong.

If they're really short on money, start arranging mail order brides/husbands (for a fee, of course). BK gets much needed cash, and some BK citizens get to leave the country. It's a win/win.

China props up North Korea so that they have a buffer between them and a potentially hostile South Korea and their American allies, and also so they don't have to deal with millions of starving, illiterate refugees. It's actually a pretty smart strategy, as long as you know when to yank on the leash.

There's a difference between expecting war to break out and being hopeful.  Every time they saber-rattle, there's the chance that it'll go hot.  That holds even if Lil' Kim wants it or not.  If tensions are high enough, an accident can spiral out of control.

Imagine if, at the height of tensions over the last month or so, there had been an accident at a NK ammo dump near the DMZ.  It could have turned into a shooting war very fast.

Also, the reason i'm asking is, would paint really last long enough with any kind of foot traffic to be worth the cost of painting the floor? What kind of surface would you need to even take the paint?

I've never got why South Korea even agreed to the Kaesong complex. It seems right up there on the "bad idea" scale next to allowing a mental patient to shave your balls.

concrete would be the second answer, and if you dont wear shoes indoors then it should last quite a while, and painting yourself into a corner is an old american idiom, not sure where it came from and don't care to google it

There's also thinking that war is inevitable and hoping that at least it happens when the "good guys" are in a position to win as cheaply as possible.

I'm not a warmonger, but the likelihood that this will end up another "East Germany collapse and peaceful reunification" scenario is pretty much zero IMHO.  So if there's going to be a war, probably would have been better at this time than some point where we have a weaker military, or less advantage in the political or economic realms.

Well, there is concrete sealer, and epoxy floor paint for those surfaces.

sanding and sealing hardwood floors with poly urethane...

high traffic area are usually painted because they are high traffic areas that are prone to chemical and water damage

It was a source of cheap, cheap labor to manufacture consumer goods, while simultaneously appearing to be a diplomatic achievement. Politicians win, industry wins. I think the Kaesong complex workers were paid even less than their Chinese/Bangladeshi/Vietnamese counterparts, but I'm too lazy to dig up a citation on that.

Anyway, I wouldn't be shocked if they reopen the factories after another few months.

I have a house built in 1917.  when I bought the house, the wood floor was painted.  After doing some digging (because my reaction was ALSO why paint a floor) it turns out in that time frame the choice was to pain the floor, or wax it every freaking day.  And in a working family, who has the time or energy to waste waxing when you can paint it and just be done with it?

Oh,  and yes, I have redone by floors.  I've got a nice California Redwood down now.  Looks MUCH better.

The South gets cheap labor that speaks Korean and doesn't requiring shipping the products in from China.  The North gets hard currency.  Ideally years down the road, Kaesong and other SEZs have created a class of factory workers that would be easy to integrate into a united Korea, reducing the South's cost of modernizing the North.

"Although it's relatively uncommon to see painted wood floors today, as clear-coated hardwood has become the preferred option for most homeowners, they were once a staple of interior design."

What kind of flooring do you want to paint?

Or, you know, you could just Google "painting floor" and see what comes up.
